Accept market returns and focus on earning more to contribute more. IF you need current Income, individual stocks are too risky and provide no protection to capital. What if the CEO gets killed in a plane crash. What if the investor can't stomach the volatility and sells at a 50% loss..... Better to just hold an index funds paying yield OR closed end funds capturing the whole market while paying distributions consistently every month as they have for decades.

This whole time (two and a half years now) as I entered the market while going into retirement (I've been self employed for 27 years, so no 401K's in my portfolio, thanks be to God for that!), I have been doing just what this guy is talking about, and boy there are some very loud naysayers out there re this strategy. And at 30:50, we need to scream out what he said. All these folks who fret about management fee percentages, and his take is basically "Who Cares?". I worried about this early on and could not understand the obsession about it. But as he said, those fees are paid out BEFORE the distribution, and so they make absolutely NO difference to the dividend payments.

Steve’s commented that CEFs are more sensitive to interest rates than the overall stock market. Many BlackRock CEFs, including BST, hold a large number of private companies which usually have to borrow to grow. Also, shares of private companies increase in value through spin-offs, mergers/acquisitions, and IPOs, all of which are stymied by higher interest rates.

Interesting interview. Selengut's strategy is worth considering but is a bit too active for me, and it seems hard to sell winners so often and not end up with a lot of losers. But income investing is appealing, and I tend to follow Bavaria's strategy for a portion of my portfolio.

Jeremy I do a future proofing exercise on each position where I try to peer into the future. Is their product or service apt to still be in demand for the next decade or two.? Will they still be able to continue to grow earnings? Are they well managed, does management really understand what they do and have the ability to manage the company? Is the company able and willing to utilize technology in their business? Do they just speak the buzz words that are in vogue, or do they really pursue improvement and cost reductions.? Are they able to evolve? It’s kinda fun but sometimes Im wrong in my predictions and I incorrectly abandon a company when my crystal ball looks cloudy, but I’ve also correctly seen the need to move away from Boeing and a few others ….hope this gives you some ideas.
