milling some old big pine with the lucas mill
I was excited to watch this video the other day as it's helping me to make a peg loom. I'm watching it carefully again--the way you use two screws in a board to hold the dowel when drilling the warp thread hole, the awl for pre-drilling the peg holes, the drill stop--never knew about those (I used painter's tape). etc! (If you did put anything on the wood to finish it, I"d be interested to know...) Also in one of your videos you mention Hurricane Ridge Farm--I have some of their Romney roving back from when they provided the fiber for the spinning challenge (VT Sheep and Goat).
What width type of warp string do you use please? I bought some but it seems too thin. Thanks 😊
If you cut the bottom side (horizontal) first, you don't have to worry about the blade getting wedged. Then, you can finish up with the vertical
Very interested my friend I need to land more obout the Lucas mill because I'm a operator of a lucas mill so I need more information from you.
Do not need the music !
Excellant video! Thank you!
Quanto é que a lucas mil
Oh I've got to have holes in my pegs! I didn't know this. I bought a two x four and dowels today to make a loom.
How do you tie the ends of the strings at the bottom and top so it doesn't come off?
Does this setup work well with small diameter logs (under say 12")?
@@robertd6925 the Millworks better with larger diameter logs 20 in and up. You can mail stuff at 12 in I just want to stack two or three logs in there at once to save on setup time
Get a carpenter’s pencil sharpener for the end of ur dowels. Also, thank you for not adding any music!
🙏👏🏻💛Thank you for taking the time to produce the video. I found it to be clear and easy to understand the process. I thank you also for not a speed-talking.👏🏻❤️
Hi there my friend whats the name of this lumber mill
Nice one mate! How good is the Lucas Mill? Pays for itself in no time
Estoy busca.ndo una máquina de esas pero quiero saber precio gracias
Is it possible to extend the rails to cut longer boards?
Yes I have extensions that would allow for 26 foot logs. the possibilities kind of limitless you could just keep connecting 20-ft rails if you purchase more than one frame. It would be more of a novelty to do that. with today's modern framing techniques lumber that long even beams wouldn't be necessary
@@frosthornhollowfarm2912 Thank you I will rebuild an old house so I will probably need beams like 7 or 8 meters long if I take on that project. Is it as sturdy with extensions or does it get more wobbly in any way? Btw what model do you have and how wide deep boards can it cut?
@@Average-AL yes it's sturdy if it's set up correctly. I have the 8-30.
It cuts up to 17 inchs wide. I'd never do that though for a lot of wood.
@@frosthornhollowfarm2912 8-30 that is their biggest model, right? I have requested a prislist, until then do you remember the price?
Do you sell the loops and the cost?
Where to purchase the loops?
We do not make and sell them. You might find some for sale on Etsy

About $16,000
hello. I am starting to build a mill house for my Lucas. I was curious about yours. Are you able to push your millhead indoors at night. how would you have built it differently now that you are using it?
Everything thing can be broken down and stored in the shed, except the rails. Most of the year the mill is set up with the carriage covered with a canvas tarp. If I could decide on a permanent home for it I would build a shed to cover the mill when it's set up. Currently it's easier to move the mill to the logs, so it's never parked in the same place for long
Glad I found this video. I just milled a bunch of stickers this way following your method. It works great. By the way, I have an 8-30 like yours and the kerf is pretty much 1/4". Is that normal? Shouldn't it be more like 3/16? Thanks.
Ya 1/4" is what I figure, it makes the math easier
I've done two logs at a time - would like to do three. Did you have to shim and adjust each log until they were all three lined up? That way you could just move across all three? Too bad I cut one set of knotches on the bunks too close to the right side - too far right to get the blade beside the log. I guess if you lined them up close together, in the middle, like you did, it will work. Obviously it worked for you.
I did have to choke each one. If I'm doing three or more I just get them as close to lined up as possible. If I do this it's only for 1 and 2 inch boards, so any loss isn't that great. I do this with small logs to burn through them faster. It saves on set up time.
What are the inches of the base? 60 pegs, but how many inches.
About to buy one, do you ever regret not getting the 10-30. Curious as to what were the factors that made you choose the 8 over the 10
I don't regret buying the 8-30. the wood I use for framing isn't bigger than 8". The exception is something like stair stringers, in that case, I can cut from the other side to make a few. The 2" gain for making 1" boards wasn't worth the extra cost.
Very nice. What size mill do you have? 8-30?
8-30
Lokasmill di jual di mana ya??
Still a rookie sorry bud😊
Love it 😍
You are very kreative
I think I hear him saying "$$chaching$$" every time he completes a run.
I love the smell of sawdust in the morning.
Ah very good! I'm waiting for my Lucas Mill which should be here any day now, and I was wondering how I was going to cut stickers without my bandsaw. Thanks for the video!
I am just about to start weaving on mine. Have never done it before. I have to spin my yarn first. I am pleased I saw your video. It Will be a great help 😊
If you do the stop cut on the horizontal and the relief cut in the pull back vertical then you don't need the wedge. When I'm working solo like you are I also idle down when letting hands off the trolley to remove flitches, saves an accident where a flitch or the board gets thrown by the blade which would fly out the tail end but none the less it will mess up the board and slow you down, also helps stop the trolley from running away under gyroscopic forces of full power. Lube up the throttle to make it easy to power on and off.
Love it,but my hubby would never let me near his tools!😅 He'd be afraid too much blood would get on them😮😅😂😮
That's a black box with a mirror and a lense inside .
Try and show the other side where the measurements are also.the works area .we want to see the other side also not the blades only
Do they still make that style of sawmill?
Yes they do. Bailey's in California sells them. Awesome mills. I have the 8-30.
even though you don't have a bandsaw, you still found a reason to roll a log up a ramp lol. Great videos keep em coming!
Thanks! Great vídeo 👍

You are cutting the opposite way mate👍🏻🇦🇺push then pull👌🏻 Lucas has made me some good coin and people so awesome furniture and much more
I've tried it both ways - both ways work. It's easier to pull vertical first then push horizontal if you're milling by yourself - that way you don't have to walk to the other side of the mill to move the board.
@@johnoswald6192 Ya need to get a mate too tail out for you. It works but is not designed for silly shortcuts Boss man🤯 Slow is smooth n smooth is fast🇭🇲
Your sawing ass backwards do the horizontal cut first destroying the end of every board when it drops down on the saw at the end of the cut. If this mill won't do that I don't want it
i could do the horizontal first and I do on large timbers. they tend to sit on the blade and bind. the issue then is the lumber tails off from the opposite side and when I am working alone I would have to walk around the machine for each board. on one inch boards I'm moving so fast as I go through horizontally the board doesn't have time to drop onto the blade. if any thing it lands on the riving knife. even if it did take a little off the end it would be within the last inch. perfectly acceptable as logs are cut 6"-7" longer for trim. if your cutting logs to the finished lumber length you already messed up.
Wow this is great ... Thank you so much you deserve alot more likes 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 and definitely more views... God bless you best wishes from San Bernardino California
Thank you

Haven't had to yet. I would suggest cold water and no agitation. I'm sure some felting will be inevitable
Love the idea of putting the peg in the chuck to round to the top, very clever 🙂
