I had a MK7 R and I really enjoyed it but hated the weak clutch and mushy shifter. I did a few mods to it like the diesel geek shifter, intake and JB4 and it was nice and quick and the DCC on it was great. I went and looked at the MK8's and they feel like they cheaped out on the rear door cards and just overall the interior didn't feel like it was representative of the higher price tag. I had an M340i ordered to replace my leased Tesla Model 3 performance but it got stuck in shipping purgatory down in mexico with no delivery date in sight and my lease was up so I bailed on that and ended up finding a perfectly spec'd X3M Comp. I drove the X3 m40i also and it felt like a more comfortable and practical daily and still had the tuning potential of the B58 but the insane first year depreciation that these BMW's take meant that I ended up getting the X3M for right at the same price I was going to be paying for a brand new M340i. Only thing I'm wanting to do with my X3 is replace the aftermarket H pipe that the previous owner installed and get a resonated pipe. The S58 is pretty ratty and harsh at low rpm and a non-resonated mid pipe only makes it that much worse. Past 3K rpms though... my god... it's glorious but I still think the B58 sounds better overall. There's a few of the B58 supras in town with aftermarket exhausts both resonated and non-resonated and they all sound incredible.

Cool perspective. I have an M340 (22) and my wife has a Golf R (24). Both have adaptive suspensions and bot are autos. I actually believe that the Golf rides better with more options on the DCC. The BMW is too soft in comfort and way too stiff in sport (+) at least for my rear. Personally, I think the steering is better with the Golf and you can definitely feel its lighter weight. In terms of outright acceleration, they are really, really close but I give the edge to the Golf in handling. My BMW excels as a highway cruiser, however, and of course it has more internal room. The interior is a step up on the Golf and it should be given the price difference. I think you will be really happy with the M340 - congrats.

I have a '16 R and I haven't upgraded because I hate the newer steering controls you mentioned, but I will say that new black edition R does look good.

My leased m340 goes back in around 3 weeks. I'm planning to order a lease for the golf R mk 8.5 black edition due for delivery in around 6 months. Which car feels faster? How would you compare the driving experience?

I personally like my 8R better and luckily have had zero issues since ownership.

I went from the Cupra Formentor 310bhp to the M340i, night and day improvement. It staggers me that they didn’t think to illuminate the touch controls for temperatures, at night I’d have to wait till I pass a light in order to get an idea of where the control is. The 2.0 engine needs work, the 3.0 in the BMW is way smoother and the power curve is constant. I do miss the adaptive cruise control though

Both had their advantages for me but ultimately I’m a hatch guy at heart!

One of the workarounds for the start/stop function is to put the car in sport individual mode and to set all options to comfort.

m340 is probably the best out of its competitors, but I would choose probably an S4. Those things hug corners like crazy and quattro is no joke! (i’m still picking bmw tho)
