Doctor Who: The Underwater Menace Animation Review
I saw the two films when they first came out, the second film meant that Sugar Puffs had to finance it, hence the posters, the scene when when Wyler and Susan were in a van crashing to Daleks was a let down. Why?, just look at the Dalek prop bottoms that were hollowed out… Conway was played by the late Keith Marsh (1926 ‑ 2013), also played Jacko in the Thames Television Love Thy Neighbour tv series.
'Yes but do I have the RIGHT to destroy the evil alien?'
4:36 was composed by the late Malcolm Lockyer, Barry Grey did the Dalek City sound effects for both films, the late Bill McGufie wrote the score for Dr. Who & The Daleks.
@jacksugden8190 That was my bad. Your correct Malcolm Lockyer wrote most of the music & Barry Grey contributed. it was also my understanding that Bill McGuffie wrote the music for the film's sequel, the Daleks invasion earth 2150ad.
I can't imagine a less appealing approaching to animation. Cheap and utterly hideous.
For me the most forgotten companion has to go to Kamelion. I was 10 years old when the final part of The King's Demons was broadcast on 16th March 1983. There was an 8 month gap before The Five Doctors was broadcast on 25th November which seemed a very long time when I was 10, a whole new school year had started, so plenty of time had passed to forget that Kamelion had joined the TARDIS crew. Planet of Fire Episode 1 was broadcast on 23rd February 1984, which makes the original gap between Kamelion's two stories almost a full year. No wonder he was forgotten.
@@jkmac625 Kamelion was a very hollow companion 😆
Not forgotten by me as I've both movies and I've only got the classic dr who's on dvd . Give the new show a wide birth up to season three and gave up. Who as lost it and less to be said for the classic dr who that there putting in colour as there cut to hell . And don't even make sense anymore i thought they was going to colour the full episodes boy was i wrong so stopped getting them . They have just killed dr who in my book what with the new show's and the so called full colour episodes BBC out to make money on a good old classic but sad monsters in every episode what ever happened to the time traveling classics can't BBC do them anymore without some bad CGI monsters having to be in them . And for what they did with the war games what was the point in colour if there going to just do that then keep them. And people go on about missing episodes ..
@PaulGould-t7u The new colour versions aren't going to be for everyone. We all have different tastes. 😉
I have the same ranking. #1 Day, #2 Death, #3 Planet. I also feel like Planet was too long. I love Pertwee's era, but some of his 6 part stories feel like 4 part stories padded out to 6. I think that switching from three 6 part stories per series down to one 6 parter per series in Tom Baker's era was a good decision. That also left room for an additional story.
They lost their magic in the 1970s. Moffat compounded the error by opening the suit and ruining the mystery.
I got the impression they were decaying humanoids in a life support unit. Not a cyborg.
I think you're overreacting. The original has a lot of filler that does not need to be there. Yes they overdo the flashbacks. Yes they overdo the music, but it’s fine for what it is. The fat has been trimmed out to tighten up the narrative. It’s interesting as a recap. Besides this is way better than the War Games in colour.
@intergalactic92 I'm glad you liked the new version, but I disagree. The war Games in colour keeps more of the overall narrative intact. It removes mainly character stuff, whereas daleks in colour removes so much of the story, creating plot holes & the way scenes are edited together feel very choppy to me. It's an okay, heavily streamlined version of the original. But I do mainly watch them because not only do I get to see it in colour but It's also a new way of experiencing these stories.
The only thing I don’t particularly like about the Silurians is that the ending feels like a bit of a cop out. The brigadier just destroys the base. He just does it. And it so quick and so easy, and so casually, you are left to wonder why he didn’t do it sooner. And I’ll be honest, I never felt like it was coming. The balance of power is never properly established. You never fell like the humans have the advantage or the power to just end it like that whenever they want. We're so used to the soldiers being utterly useless in these stories ("just once I would like a creature that isn’t immune to bullets") that the fact they can do this feels weird. Maybe it’s not helped by the fact I went in knowing that it was going to happen so there was no opportunity for me to be shoocked. It’s both one where the plot has been copied so many times, almost beat for beat in the sea devils and the hungry earth/cold blood, and so famous that it’s hard to go in spoiler free. So maybe I was expecting a bit more.
@@intergalactic92 Doctor Who & The Silurians is a brilliant story exploring themes like the dangers of prejudicial view points of the indifferent as well as the destructive nature of humanity. But I think I have to disagree with you. In terms of the humans feeling weaker than the Silurians, yes you're right. From a physical & technological stand point the Silurians are stronger, but where humanity has the upper advantage is in their large numbers. But the story isn't too focused on power struggle. You mentioned cold blood / hungry earth. I saw that story before Silurians, & yes, it is very much a cutdown modern version that story. But Silurians has much more time to develop the tensions between the Doctor, the humans, & the Silurians. You really get to feel the weight of the choices the Doctor makes, as he's caught in the middle of both species at war, trying to prevent further violence without sacrificing his ideals. It's a story that was ahead of everything the show had done before. But I'm biased because its my favourite doctor who story. 😉
80s Cybermen are my favourite villains, these were the ones I grew up watching. And I unironically love Attack of the Cybermen the most. Sure, the 60s is probably a stronger era overall, but I’ve only seen Tomb of the Cybermen so can’t fairly judge them all, but the overall feel of the 80s with their silver suits, and the fist clenching Leader, just hits me right in the nostalgia.
@intergalactic92 I totally get it, Earthshock is a lot of fun & I have a sweet spot for attack of the Cybermen. Plus, David Banks is EXCELLENT!
Katarina is interesting because she is the first companion death. The lack of appearances is what creates intrigue. It also highlights just how much of a toxic working environment the show had become at that time. Peter Purves has spoken about how difficult it was working on the show around that time, and how William Hartnell shielded all the guest-stars from the producers/directors etc, and the challenges of how they kept on hiring and then firing female actors for the female companion role (to hear him speak he doesn’t consider anyone, even Dodo, to be permanent companions during this time). Allegedly Katarina only became a companion in the first place because the higher ups wanted to get rid of Maureen O’Brien (Vicki). She would ask the writers questions about the plot and offer notes that rubbed them the wrong way (allegedly). It was clearly hastily done, in a story which pushed them towards introducing a character from Ancient Greece/troy, which clearly nobody had put any thought into the consequences of this, and when they realised it was too late. Now a better set of writers might have taken up the challenge of writing someone with a more primitive mindset to make it work (look at Leela for a great example of a primitive minded character) but not these writers. By all accounts The Dalek Masterplan is a needlessly complicated mess before you even consider the wild card of a tricky to write companion. I can understand why they took the quick and easy way out by unceremoniously killing her off, but I will always consider it cowardly. Edit: I am referring mostly to Dalek Masterplan's reputation. I obviously have not seen it, or have real opinions on it or Sara Kingdom (the episodes are lost and I’m too young to have seen it at the time).
@intergalactic92 Katarina was someone who was never going to work for the type of stories they were doing in the shows third season & moving forward. It's such a shame that so much of the story doesn't exist because there is some really dark stuff in it that I love, but there are moments where it has some pacing issues in the middle. This may be just me, though. I have only experienced this through a telesnap reconstruction, which is hard to get through when there aren't a lot of photos existing for most of season 3. Hopefully, it will get animated.
To be the best part of these colourisations, is when they do the physical release, it comes with the original dvd too. Since older dvds are harder to come by, having basically a reprint is appropriated
@dylanshadowstar9779 I agree. It makes them a bit annoying knowing that I'll have to rebuy them again when the collection box set comes out. 😄
Hey, can you please not use my Dalek renders in your thumbnail please? especially erasing my watermark and not giving any credit to begin with.
@The_Prydonian yeah, no worries. I won't use them next time.
I like Dr. Who & The Daleks
I like Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D
Great - nice summary. I'd heard somewhere that the script for Day of the Daleks originally wasn't a Dalek story, but they were shoehorned in by someone in the BBC. On the downside, you've made me feel very old as I experienced all of these initially through Target novelisations rather than dvd (though not quite as old as someone who saw them originally!).
@kerravon2527 You're right there. From what I've seen from documentaries, the daleks weren't in the script at all. According to Terrace Dicks, Barry Letts wanted to boost the shows ratings even further by having the daleks be in one of the stories that season. So Terrance Dicks chose louis Marks script, & volia we got Day of the daleks. That inclusion of the Daleks brought more viewers that season than the previous, so it absolutely paid off. BTW I'm sorry if I make you feel old. 😄
@@thewhoview Very kind!
Death my first vhs in 87 and Day of are brilliant special edition is good not keen on new series dalek voices improvement tho had the target books the storys characters and settings and Daleks cunning threat, by genesis its just Davros stories with Daleks
@benflay6038 that's awesome 👌 totally agree with you. From Genesis onwards, the daleks are very dependent on Davros.
@thewhoview they turn up last episode genesis which fine as its there origin story but that's it until remeberance renegades supreme dalek is back
Always wondered what happened to Kamelian when the Tardis was ripped apart in "Frontios!"
@@markstramtrainbuscapades1729 Maybe there's an off-screen adventure in between Frontios & Resurrection of the Daleks where the doctor left Kamelion behind on some planet & then remembers after Frontios & goes back for him. 🤣
I have only seen the original. But I will say Jon Pertwee is and will always be my favorite Doctor.
@@DarrenEden-ub4vj Pertwee was such a fantastic doctor.
I'd say "Death to the Daleks" is my favourite, it was probably the first Jon Pertwee Dalek story I watched. It was the 90 minute compilation edit released by BBC Video. Looking at the release date my parents must have bought it for me to watch over the school summer holidays that year (1987). I think "Day of the Daleks" was also released as a 90 minute compilation by BBC Video the previous year but I probably didn't get them in release order back then. I didn't get to watch "Planet of the Daleks" until it was shown on BBC1 in November 1993. I think I've only seen the special edition of "Day" once (maybe twice) on DVD, but the new Dalek voices were a definite improvement over the original, and the new scenes were shot on 16mm film to keep in the style of the original so they seemed to blend in seamlessly. I started a re-watch on BBC iPlayer about 6 months ago but I started on the first Sarah Jane story so I've seen "Death" recently but not the other two.
@jkmac625 that's really cool. They did a lot of those early releases on VHS as feature legnth versions.
Death to The Daleks is one of my favorite Doctor Who stories. I love everything about it. I love how Galloway is paranoid of the Doctor(a natural reaction to how the team is being picked off one by one) and ends up being a hero at the end. I also like how he's uneasy with the Daleks killing off hostages but understands that they need to work with them to save millions of lives. The Day of The Daleks is also excellent. I suspect a young James Cameron may have watched it. Planet is a little padded but I love the message that The Doctor imparts to the team leader at the end to not make war sound like a grand adventure.
The only 70s cybermen story was awful and apart from earthshock they didnt do well in the 80s. The 60s was best era for cybermen in fact i loved them all apart from the wheel in space which i found a drag to watch.
Day and Planet are great!
@markg6749 both are a lot of fun.
Best Dalek story is destiny of the Daleks but a close second is Planet of the Daleks
@thethinkingcatakaneonormie3527 Destiny of the daleks is an interesting choice. I've personally always found it to be the weakest dalek story of classic who.
The Pertwee Dalek stories are my least favourite Dalek stories in classic who :(
@FlatCapWhovian1865 Hey, that's fine. we're all different. 😉
@@thewhoview Agreed. Not sure what it is about the other two (if I did have to pick a favourite it would be Death to the Daleks) but the one I've just never got is Planet of the Daleks. Watching the documentaries on the DVD's growing up it was hailed as "The Daleks greatest hits!" and I've just never got the love for it? Virtually a repeat of the first Dalek story
@FlatCapWhovian1865 Yeah, I understand it does repeat almost every story beat of the daleks first story & uses other things like master plan as well. But death to the Daleks is a good pick. 😊
There were 4 Jon Pertwee Dalek stories (also Frontier in Space). Anyway.
@damienkakoschke3099 Yeah, I mentioned this in the video, that it is technically a dalek story, but the daleks aren't revealed until episode 6 of frontier & even then, they're only in it for 10-15 minutes & aren't the main focus of the story.
Death and Day are great, Planet is such a drag.
@tomhyde9938 planet of the daleks didn't need to be six episodes long, but it is a fun jungle run around & I agree with you Day & Death are fantastic.
I love Death and Day, great stories and the first two I had on VHS. I enjoy Day with the updated effects.
@Thunderpuddle that's really cool to hear. The special edition of day of the daleks is fantastic.
Tricky choice. Now, I think that the politics and time travel paradox of Day make it the most accomplished story. But as a kid watching these, the adventure of Planet was a real favourite - and, of course, I had no idea that it was derivative of earlier stories. Pertwee very much “my doctor” and I’ll stick with my childhood preference for Planet.
@brucebush5744 Day I think is the superior script. The ideas feel so far ahead of what the show was doing. Planet of the daleks is a lot of fun, so I understand. 😁
Agreed.....special edition Day Of The Daleks is the best. Thank-you for the video.
@petefischer3820 Thank you for watching & commenting. The special edition is probably my favourite classic story with new updated effects. It's such an awesome way to experience that story. 😊
I appreciate Nicholas Briggs's voice work on the Special Edition but (slightly) annoyed that there isn't an original audio track available on the Blu Ray Special Edition version. The visual improvements really enhance the story and the flatness of the original Dalek voice work capture their boredom with years of the occupation and they'd really be happier shouting 'exterminate' trundling down corridors and shooting enemies rather than the drudgery of bureaucracy.
@timothybarnett1006 that would have been an interesting option to give to fans. Personally, I prefer the new voices, so much more menacing, but everyone is different. 😉
My criteria for a 'Companion' is: Was in more than one story, and traveled with the Doctor. Ergo, sadly, Sara Kingdom doesn't qualify. Should she have been a companion is another matter, I certainly think she'd have been better than Dodo.
I largely agree with everything here, Tenth Planet might be one of the best designs of the Cybermen, Tomb and Invasion are actually just masterpieces, the only other stories that have them at such an excellent level of menace and might is Earthshock, World enough and time/Doctor Falls and in my opinion also Attack of the Cybermen. Rise/Age of Steel are perfectly fine and workable it's a good reintroducing but until series 10 it's the only story that gets what the Cybermen are about instead of being just Robots or playing second fiddle like Death in Heaven which I also like but more because of 12/Missy
Day wasn't my favourite, it's not bad but I just didn't completely vibe with it, Death is probably my favourite even though it's not perfect, and Planet was fine it's just Terry Nation reusing a bunch of ideas from his previous stories which are all fine it's enjoyable enough, but being 6 parts it drags on more than previous longer Dalek epics. I'm not even bothering placing Frontier in Space, which starts of with two much of shuffling Jo and 3 from prison cell to cell, picks up massively when the Master appears, and then the ending sadly let's it all down and the fact that Planet that carries directly on doesn't really address any of it saddens me
The Daleks were attacked by a silver hoover pipe.
Death to the Daleks was the start of the horror style Doctor Who that captured me as a very young boy. The Exxilons were terrifying.. especially their chanting .. the music ..the pyramid maze with skeletons in it. Even the maze floor cliff hanger ..that many hate - I loved ! A top story!
@simonclarke4574 Yeah, I can see the hammer horror inspiration. I've always enjoyed it as well, It's a great adventure story. 😀
Well observed. And, already, "Day of the Daleks" had that gothic element - ghosts and a haunted house!
My understanding of Day of the Daleks is that the Daleks are actually superfluous to the entire story. It may as well be an Ogron invasion that the rebels are trying to prevent. It’s like they had a good idea and someone said, 'you know what would make it better? Daleks' and they were forced to bend over backwards to shoehorn the daleks in somehow. Which is a shame.
@intergalactic92 that's very much how it comes across in the original version. The daleks do kind of feel secondary, but in the special edition, they've made it so that the daleks are a bigger threat that looms over the whole story. New cgi shots of dalek insignias on buildings & the end battle with more Daleks ect. The new changes very much transform the Daleks to being the stars.
Letts and Dicks wanted to concentrate on their own concepts like the Master and the Daleks were very much forced upon them. They come across as generic baddies and lack any disturbing aspects relating to the mutation inside. Terry Nation 's way with a Dr Who script hadn't moved on much with the times and hadn't kept pace. '
@normanby100 Well, you're not exactly wrong there, but the Daleks are always taken seriously. Letts was also the one who suggested to Terry Nation to give us a genesis for the daleks. Resulting in Genesis of the daleks being one of the greatest Who stories of all time.
@ I don't doubt Letts took the Daleks seriously, trouble is the stories weren't that interesting.
Day is one of the very best, Planet is good but....Death (at least some of it) is pretty poor.
@michaelwhiles5282 I love hearing everyone's different opinions 😁 I have always really enjoyed all these dalek stories, especially Death to the Daleks, I find it such a fun adventure. But I do understand the criticisms people have with that story.
Planet of the Daleks was my favourite story had a lot of Adventure Jo on her own on a hostile planet with them having to escape the planet before the daleks capturing them. The spiridons were a nice add to the story with their purple cloaks. The 3rd doctor era was my favourite with solid episodes it didn't have many poor stories/seasons like future doctors had. 4th doctors stories are easily looked on by me genesis was excellent but destiny was awful
@mark-s Yeah, planet of the daleks is very fun. The third doctor's era is definitely the most consistent era of the show. Terrance dicks & Barry Letts literally gives us no duds. All Pertwee's stories are enjoyable.
The special edition is better and planet of the daleks I think is the best
@thomasjohnson8391 the special edition is so great. Expanding the scale of everything, & planet of the Daleks is very fun. 😁
Pertwee was such a great Doctor. He was my Doctor
Pertwee fought the dalek more times even if it was three
@akshaytrayner1960 Yeah, I was talking more about screen appearances. Technically speaking, you could say 4, including the frontier in space.
I love all these stories mate but I think I'd have to say that Day of the Daleks is my fave. It's properly about the consequences of time travel and it has UNIT in it.
i loved the Pertwee era but found the electronic sound effects through his era to be rather irritating most of the time. Completely agree about day of the Daleks, and was very impressed with the efforts made to improve on the original.
Random gripe with Day of the Daleks - This is their first TV outing in colour and the designers make the Daleks grey with black trimmings. Oh well, I guess it was the 70's and at the time having every shade of brown you could wish for was considered high fashion. Having said that the grey worked perfectly with the bleak, militaristic tone of Genesis.
@jaidanielparker I love the grey Daleks, but yeah, it's kind of odd that they didn't take advantage of the daleks now being in colour.
Day of the Daleks is my favourite dalek story and yes, the special edition is way better than the original.
@robburdlow4301 You have good taste, my friend. 😉👍
