Modeling of a Concrete Building for Advanced Analysis & Design ||RAM Structural ||Construction Stage
Tall structure design is a specific field which requires extensive calculation and advanced analysis. Several advanced structural elements like shear core, belt truss or outrigger elements are used in tall building along with advanced analysis like dynamic analysis with p-delta analysis or construction stage analysis.
In this video, I will demonstrate how we can model a building structure with all required components using RAM Structural System. I will cover some useful feature of this product required for any building structure like consideration of dual framing system with floor diaphragm, inclusion of wind tunnel data, construction stage and drift analysis.

      Physical modeler doesn't support OpenSTAAD functions, but the analytical model generated in the background can be used for automation.

      You need to define correct section property values. These are used during analysis and design, so correct value corresponding to that section must be provided.

    Is it possible to envelope the results of moving loads then use the envelope in load combos for design? I do not see this to be possible in STAAD, and I do not see the use of the moving load feature if such combination/envelope procedure is not possible.

      Partially yes, if you use other method of moving load generation rather than default feature. Check this video -- ruclips.net/video/pHm5dNyFsZA/видео.html. If you follow this process to create moving load, it is possible to get a result envelope.

      Yes, for tapered section, optimization or section selection process is not available. It is available only for uniform profile sections, including built-up section with uniform profile.

    good day Sir ! this question is a little bit out of topic. I just want to ask if it is good to model and analyze the steel truss and purlins WITH the main concrete frame structure? or is it best to analyze it separately?

      If you have a concrete-steel composite type of structure and you want to design steel as well as concrete, it is better to model those in the same file. That replicate the actual behavior of the structure during structural analysis (eg. during seismic analysis). But if you only want to analyze and design the steel truss, then you can model that portion only, assign support at proper location and apply load.

    I have some questions. In previous sessions, you said that for flexible diaphragm it is not possible to perform torsion check,is there any trick to overcome this limitation especially when a model has cantilever plates? 2.For semi rigid diaphragm,does STAAD perform torsion check? 3.How can we model flexible diaphragm and how to make software consider it directly? 4.How to model flexible diaphragm in STAAD as well? 5.For the case of plate cut out you said we have to select the nodes located in the floor slab and ignore any node at cut out,then program understands that there is no diaphragm that means we have to put nodes too where we dont have slab plates? 6.You said slopped diaphragm are not supported in STAAD which trick can be used to overcome this?

      You can read the data from excel, then using OpenSTAAD functions, create one or multiple load cases in the STAAD model and apply those reactions as nodal load.

      Using Wind load generator, we can define pressure coefficient for walls only, which is editable (available in the second page). This is considered for all 4 sides of the building, you can provide any custom value as well. For other localized pressure coefficient or roof coefficient, wind load generator cannot be used, we need to define it manually.

      For AISC 360-16, yes you can extract design ratio from multiple blocks (GetMultipleMemberSteelDesignResults). For other design codes, ratio from the last block is extracted. Governing load case along with other critical information (clause, section, force) can be extracted using same OpenSTAAD function.

    Surojit, why is RAM connection so limited? Why don't we have simple bracing connections for example?

      All connection templates are not available for all design codes. For AISC code, multiple bracing templates are available (horizontal as well as vertical bracing connection), not for Indian or Euro code. This is one limitation of the program.
