Hey, what was the name of the socket you used to tighten the nut inside the hub? thanks
Spindle Nut Socket for Dana 44.
a.co/d/iqCzAu3
My 79 has been sitting for 20 years. I think its time to wake it up. I need tonlook into those amazon carburetors and HEI.
My spindle moves in and out when trying to put the last piece back in there?
Good video. Straight to the point.
Thanks for the feedback
Good Job 🇨🇱
Thanks!
what is the hose called that comes off the air intake to the valve cover at 5:27?
I think it’s called the crankcase vent tube.
The quietest vid I've ever seen!
What wire did you connect the power wire for the distributor to?
I used the power from the old coil. It was a brown and tan wire. I stripped the wire at 23:30 in the video
@@CarolinaMedia thank you for the reply. Has the truck always been a 4.9?
@@coryshepan161 yes. This was a 300 from the factory
@@CarolinaMedia great thanks! Just asking cause mine didn’t have a motor when I bought it and I am putting in a 300. It had a 302 efi.
I’m about to do these exact mods to my grandfather’s 86 f150. I may have missed it, but what all ends up being reattached to the new carb?
Fuel filter / fuel line, throttle cable , vacuum lines and heat tube for the choke. if you go with electronic choke , you’ll need to attach the wiring for that.
@@CarolinaMedia how many vacuum lines will it have? One to the Distributor and one to the brake booster. Any other than those?
@@WittFam. Before you start the swap, take pics and maybe label the vacuum lines as you unhook them. There are a few that connect to the vacuum tree under my carb. One that goes to the heat and vent actuator inside the dash. One that goes to the canister from the gas tank. (Canister is passenger side next to the radiator.). One that comes from the PCV.
TOOLS: 8mm / 5/16 socket wrench and a flathead screwdriver Remove the electrical junction on the righthand side (if you have it) by pulling up the red clip on it, AND THEN pushing in the black piece under the red clip. Then the whole electrical piece pulls out (it may have electrical tape on it - you likely do not have to remove the tape like I did by mistake! Mine also had a zip tie which had previously been cut. I don’t know if it had to be or not. Try pulling it out without removing that stuff. ) After watching multiple videos and reading comments, and doing this myself, I would say it’s easier to completely remove both hoses. It takes no time and it makes it so much easier to put the cover back on. If you are super skilled with a long ratchet you could potentially just take the filter cover off. But honestly, I don’t see how the heck you reach the back screws. Seems like it would take FOREVER
Did you know where can I find the torque spec??
I don’t remember where I got the torque spec ( 72-108 inch lbs). I probably just googled it. If you don’t have an inch lbs torque wrench, I’d go about 7 pounds with a regular torque wrench.
Thanks buddy. I just bought a 2000 Ford ranger 2.5 manual. I need do this.
So why didn't you go with a Dura spark 2 dizzy? I like the single wire HEI for simplicity or even build something using an old D2 module box as a heat sink and a "divorced" 4 pin hei cheap module... that way the module doesn't get hot like this set up will.. either way I think the hei system is simpler but I doubt it'll last as long. I've never in my life had to replace a D2 module but I've replaced a lot of GM HEI modules because of their placement they get hot and burn out eventually. I like HEI for simplicity but I've never had to work on a dura spark 2 distributor or module in hundreds of thousands of miles.
Hey thanks for the duraspark info. I might try that on the next one. I got the idea for the HEI watching Derrick from Vise Grip Garage do one on an old ford truck. I haven’t had any issues. But I have heard of other people carrying an extra module. The HEI is so cheap, you could keep an extra distributor in the tool box just in case.
@@CarolinaMedia it occurred to me after I posted the reason most people don't just use a D2 dizzy is because of the different resistance...a D2 doesn't use the full 12 volts and needs a resistor in one of the wires to the coil to cut the voltage back to iirc 9 volts. But if you have a thick film integrated or TFI for short it already has everything you need. So people would use a dura spark 2 dizzy and a TFI coil and that's what you took off and end up with actually a better system than HEI because the D2 system module retards the timing a few degrees until the vehicle is started and saves wear on the starter also. I used to get about 50,000 miles from an HEI system module but your dizzy is not on the exhaust side so you might get more life out of yours. Some people also use a D2 dizzy and a heat sink with a 4 pin HEI module on the fender well somewhere to keep it from getting hot at all. This was another way you could run the full 12 volts. I enjoyed your video. I'm glad it works for you.
Subscribed just because of the ford truck videos
Do you have any links to the tank, sending unit, or filler hose? Thanks!
I got the tank on Amazon: 16 Gallon Side Mounted Gas Fuel... www.amazon.com/dp/B078X1535K?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I used a rear tank filler hose from Amazon. It’s longer than needed. It was easier to cut this one to fit : www.amazon.com/dp/B0914RRQSN?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
The sending unit was hard to find. I ended up buying on eBay from someone in CA. : www.ebay.com/itm/374021315635?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=N5grVFB1QxW&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=MDffqwseQ6a&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

Thanks for the comment. The truck in the video is a 5sp manual. It was a good combo with the 2.3. Great on gas and fun to drive.

What bolt did you losing for the belt
There is no bolt. Insert the 3/8ths ratchet directly into the tensioner. Release the tension on the belt by pushing the tensioner to the left (counter clockwise).
You may wanna specify this in the video.
Did you replace sensors without checking to see if existing ones are bad? I am doing this next week and am going to use all existing sensors I have a newer one (2010) with 175k
Owner wanted new cats and new sensors. He had a diagnostic tool that indicated the cats or the o2 sensors could be bad.
NICE!!
Great video, only thing missing was a few good swear words lol. Thanks man
Thanks for the feedback Timmy
Beautifully done!
Thank you!
Awesome video. I did the same thing a while back due to the computer shutting the truck off randomly every few minutes driving down the road. Mechanic never figured out what was wrong with it. HEI distributor worked like a charm. I just keep a backup one in the truck as some people say the electronics of these A team distributors go bad. New carb was installed a few days ago. Haven't gotten it adjusted just right yet, but it drives down the road so it's good enough for now. Would love to see more videos on this truck. Will be keeping an eye out!
Thanks Bob. I’ve read the same about these distributors failing. Good idea getting a spare.
I put in a new carburetor and replaced distributor with a dura spark and I love it
this video was awesome, only thing i’ll say is you don’t have to completely remove the serpentine belt
Thanks for the comment. Glad you like the video

A gift, thank you , just changed mine out with your help, much gratitude Brother
Thanks for the feedback. Glad it helped you out.
please make more videos with this truck. This was the most helpful video ive seen regarding Feedback carb removal. Please continue making videos.
Thanks Braydon. Up next: replace the leaking gas tank. I’m waiting for parts to be delivered.
15 lb/ft is way too much for the inner nut. Torque it down to seat bearings, back off and basically just hand tighten or ever so slightly more with new bearings. When you do the final torque on the outer lock nut it actually preload the inner nut even more. You'll find the rotor very hard to spin by hand if not done correctly and bearings will burn up quick
Thanks for the feedback.
I did the same upgrade to my wood chipper that has a 300-6. Fixed all my ignition issues.
Great camera work!
Thanks!
its a dirty job but somebody has to do it.had to do it on my 90 4.0. had to cut the studs & nuts that hold cat to y pipe, was so rusted no socket could grab the nuts.not a bad job if you can keep rust out of your eyes.nice work sir.
Thanks ! My Ranger was originally a Texas truck so there was very little rust.
Great video man ! Using it to replace my water pump this weekend. Curious, was it necessary to replace the thermostat & housing at the same time too ??
There was something wrong with my thermostat housing. That’s why I replaced mine. I would recommend doing both while you’re in there.
@@CarolinaMedia okay thank you ! Yea might as well
will be doing the same soon also you didn’t hook up your vac advance
it took me a while to get the vacuum advance set. I had to drive it around and keep making adjustments with an Allan wrench until I got the pinging under control.
@@CarolinaMedia All of the forums mentioned that they had pinging after removing the computer controlled setup. You were able to work that out without issue?
@@DreamRoadRonny Yes. Make sure to set the timing first without the vacuum hooked up. I ended up driving uphill in a high gear til I heard knocking (pinging). Make small adjustments to vacuum advance until pinging stops. Good luck!
Great job!
I have the EFI version, 89, shit wont idle either, timing is all over the place, computers ruined the inline six.
Remove all that and install a HEI and older carb
@@darrinrentruc6614 God help me my mechanic after 3 months got it done, its running, no more stalling, not sure what he did, other than fixing the injector o-ring that drown the engine bay, love driving a bomb. Whats the part number for the carb?
Amazon Link: a.co/d/38Ao8Ct This one is an automatic choke. No line through firewall and no electrical connection!
Thanks for that link
Is the automatic choke the heat tube from the exhaust manifold to the carb?
What connector wires did you use for the HEI?
@@Em6726I used a single wire from the old coil to the “BAT” on the new distributor. The wire was brown and white on this truck. See 23:30 in the video.
Wish I could get that carb in Commyfornia
Get a 75 or older truck and you don't have to smog it.
That year girls would destroy this years😊
“Great video! 😃 I have a 1981 F-150. Are the bearings the same? Also, do you have the seal number? Thank you very much.”
Yes. If you have a Dana 44 the bearings will be the same. I like Timken bearings: Set 45 and set 37. The seal part number for Timken is 4250. Amazon sells it for $6 Thanks for the feedback!
I have replaced my pump, and when I was done the oring for downpipe was leaking. Is there a way to properly install the oring without removing the pump? I have tried a couple of times but keep failing. Part of it, I think, is that the oring they supply is too small in diameter. It is not as nearly thicknas the one you show any hint or tricks would be great. And by the way you made a great how to video.
Did you solve the leak with 2 o rings ?
@jesushinojosa8192 ya, I did. I used two o rings and used gasket sealer to glue them on the pipe and let that dry before I installed them. It worked perfectly. Thank you
@@johnjacobson8484 thanks for the reply! Will do that ! really appreciate it
