Jae Ri Lee plays Bach, with score
Here, the young Korean cellist plays the Prelude from J. S. Bach's third suite for solo cello. This piece is an uninterrupted succession of sixteenth notes, with no apparent pause or breathing, except at the very end. The performer's ...

Jae-Ri Lee joue la Sonate Arpeggione de Franz Schubert (avec partition)
Просмотров 10416 часов назад
Young Korean cellist Jae-Ri Lee (이재리), accompanied by pianist Ahn Ji-Won, plays, in a delicate and moving way, one of Franz Schubert's masterpieces. It is interesting to compare it with versions by established artists. Rostropovich and Benjamin Britten, for example. Their interpretation, whose splendour is beyond question, is admirably expressive. But listening to Jae-Ri, you get the impression...

Yuja Wang plays Beethoven's 4th concerto

Yuja Wang plays the most beautiful of Beethoven's piano concertos. We will appreciate the extreme delicacy of the slow movement (one of the most beautiful dialogues ever written between piano and orchestra), and the crystalline purity of the fast movements. A Beethoven almost Mozartian, despite its energy. 1er mvmt : 00:12 2e mvmt : 19:32 3e mvmt : 25:07
Yuja Wang plays Prokofiev, Concerto 1

In a open-air concert at Berlin's Waldbühne on June 22, 2024, Yuja Wang played the Prokofiev's First Concerto, accompanied by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Kirill Petrenko. The sound quality of the recording is not very good, but once again we can admire the pianist's incredible mastery. A scintillating performance of unequalled clarity and vitality.
Yuja Wang plays Chostakovitch, a transcription for piano of the 2th movement of the Eight Quatuor

Thanks to the person who recorded this piece! Not without difficulty, I unearthed a score of this transcription (by Boris Gitburg) of the Allegro molto from Shostakovich's Eighth Quartet. But it's not exactly what Yuja Wang plays. What she plays is more difficult than what the score suggests (she often plays octaves where the score indicates single notes). And I confess that even as a page-turn...

Here's another encore from the Paris recital on June 5, 2024. Thanks to the person who recorded it! It's a moving example of Yuja's delicate touch, which remains ethereal, impalpable, even when the score is the most dense and most complex.
Yuja Wang plays Ravel, Toccata from Le Tombeau de Couperin, with score

Here's one of the many encores Yuja played at her Paris recital on June 5, 2024. Thanks to the person who recorded it! It's an almost frightening example of her mastery of the keyboard. She plays this extremely difficult Toccata at an unheard tempo. Not only is the result impeccable, but once you've digested that mad tempo, you realize that the work, under her fingers, if it's hectic, it's no l...
Yuja Wang plays Chopin, Quatrième Ballade

The sound quality is that of a cell phone, and so is the picture. Nevertheless, I'd like to thank the person who captured this Quatrième Ballade for us, and it's such a treasure that I can't resist publishing it with the score. In the fast, forte passages, the sound unfortunately blurs, while Yuja's touch is always absolutely clear. But this recording, with all its flaws, still allows us to hea...

Here's a find that I hope will delight all Yuja fans: the first movement of Chopin's Second Concerto, which she played at the age of... 7 years old, according to the date indicated by the Chinese TV. But as someone pointed out to me, it's likely that she was older at the time (around 10 years). In any case, the result is magnificent! The picture is mediocre, and so is the sound (and the synchro...

Arabesque, deux versions (1996 and 2023)
Просмотров 593Год назад
At the age of nine, Yuja played Claude Debussy's 1st Arabesque in Paris. 27 years later, in the same city, she played the last part again. The comparison is moving. Both versions versions follow almost the same tempo, but the 2023 version is more undulating and caressing, more emotional and nostalgic too. On the whole, nevertheless, Yuja is true to herself, to the simple classicism of her child...

The Wang cult is taking strange forms. Hardcore fans, euphoric about Wang's nakedness, are outdoing each other in hyperbolic hymns of praise. Wang's interpretation of op. 106 is banal; she clearly doesn't know what she's playing. She doesn't know what she's doing when she exposes her thighs in front of an audience. What's the point of that? In Berlin, a critic wrote in the summer of 2016 that Wang's recital was the worst concert of the year.

It has a completely different sound on a piano. Some things aren't meant to be transcribed. There is another Shostakovich quartet I love (I think it is number 7, the short one) and it would not be right to play it at a piano.

Is it a piece which should sound serene and lyrical? I do not think so. It is a ballad, a story telling piece with an epic character and a tragic or even cataclysmic ending, and it must be played as such. This interpretation is somewhat insipid and seriously lacking in breadth.

Finally I found Bach played by Yuja Wang. Rachmaniov, Gershwin superb. But I was worried about how Yuja would be able to approach the strict rhythm of Bach's baroque music. Hey, and how she can!! The individual voices are crystal clear and everything remains light and floating. Thank you Yuja. More Bach, please. You both are the greatest.

I've played for many years and I sat back and watched that with awe. Simply extraordinary! Especially when you understand the difficulties. I saw and met her in 2008 or 2009 right out of Curtis and she did things that were astonishing. She played "Flight of the Bumblebee" chromatics in double octaves so blazing fast that even Horowitz would have been struck by it. She was ever smiling and nice as can be. It was unforgettable.

Who do you think captures the essence of the ballad- what pianists?

    • @alexpianov6958
      @alexpianov6958 2 месяца назад

      1. Modern pianists of the last 30 years are not able to convey all the tragedy and doom of Chopin's ballads (especially 1, 2 and 4). However, this concerns not only the ballads, but the entire work of one of the most tragic Artists in the history of Art. And not because they do not want to, but because they do not feel and do not sense the grand scale and drama of romantic music. Most of them are personalities in artistic terms, very small, although they can play the piano very well. 2. For me, an absolutely unattainable interpretation of the 4 ballads (and Chopin in general) is S. Richter. For example, this entry: ruclips.net/video/lrNWs2OmzBQ/видео.html
