Amiga 1200 Massive Case Upgrade + PiStorm32 Lite For CHARITY!
Просмотров 3,2 тыс.Месяц назад
Today I am building an Amiga 1200 into a big box Checkmate 1500 plus case. There are a few challenges along the way with breaking out SD cards and USB to the rear of the case. But the journey was certainly worth the effort, and best of all this whole computer and all the bits with it will be auctioned off to raise money for charity. I used to STOP some bought games, then you could alter the BASIC code lines for simple prog changes - so was educational but became impossible with the Machine Code programs that were so much better. anyway

Frightened to look in my loft - not the ZX81, Spectrum or Mega Sega PC - but 2 huge boxes with 100s of redundant CABLES collected since 1990 - all permutations of connectors plus mono/stereo or male/female variations at each end - firewire, scart, coax, phono, USB various types, 1/4" jack, 1/8" jack etc - ECOLOGICAL & FINANCIAL NIGHTMARE FOR ME They take up space doing nothing for 25 years, but if you bin one, you will be desperate for just that one the next week.

I made 3 mods to my ZX81 -ventilation holes drilled along back plate, an adjustable L bracket to stop the external RAM wobbling, and finally a joystick with Fire button made from a small Maplin box and parts for maybe £10, and soldered the short 6 core cable onto the 6/7/8/9/0 connections on M/board - The metal joystick was briefly TOUCHED against the edge of hole in metal top-plate of plastic box as the earth return (and fire button), giving very basic control in the 4 directions.

Great job, I like the part where you said, "it won't be seen, bit I know about it" I am exactly like that, should not be front shine and back grime. Well done on the build sofar.

Its just the nature of the beast to change things on the fly, mine was exactly like this. Very time consuming. Your build looks very well sorted. I made my lockdown bar from an scrap piece of sq tubing I found at the scrapyard, cut a piece of wood, clamped it down and whacked it with a big hammer.

Superb. A DoohicKEY could be a cheaper alternative replacement keyboard controller, also have the HDD pin. I have been building an A500 in a new black case and repainted keyboard plate to deal with rust. Was I right pain, made so many rookie spray painting mistakes, looks tidy now though. Love the gold by the way, I think the clear case warrants the extra effort. Brilliant work.

I just bought one and the record and play buttons broke in shipping, the play button itself seems fine but when taking the drive out I notice theres a tiny piece of broken or missing metal that the button would press down to lock so instead its just wobbly and not locking, the record button has come off and I don't know how to get it back on. not going to composite mod it as buying a RGB scart.

To use gel flux just add a little bit on 2 corners, no need to flood it everywhere. Then put the chip on top and move the chip around a bit to make the flux transparent. Then solder 2 opposite corners. Then add more flux to the rest of the chip and solder the remaining pins. You don't need gobs of flux, a little bit goes a long way and then you can see the chip pins/pads.

It's time for a new vid, there is a nano version now that is basically the same size as a real 6581 and incorporates all the parts and the PiPico directly onto a single pcb. This is one where most people will get the pcb company to also add the smd parts since the microntroller is not noob-friendly ;-)

Try removing a chip on a 4-layer board and you'll quickly discover even the Hakko doesn't work. Your repairs may not have those high-end multi-layer boards but in the arcade scene it's very common. Pro Tip 1: Use it on the lowest heat setting and don't bump up the temp otherwise you'll burn the pcb. Pro Tip 2: Use hot air to heat the board to about 100C and then the hole will come out clean first time even on the heavy ground planes. Pro Tip 3: Use less pressure pushing down on the pcb and it will avoid scratching the solder mask on nearby traces. Pro Tip 4: If a leg is bent over, heat with soldering iron and straighten it first, don't try to save time and use the desoldering tool to heat and straighten it because the end result will be a burned board, scratched solder mask and no time saving.

You'll get a surprise the next time you have to buy those white ceramic filters on the end.... ;-) Be sure to protect the filter by putting something in the tube to stop the solder, old flux and gas hitting it, something like steel wool works well or a small piece of tissue paper rolled up into a ball. Protect those filters otherwise you'll be sorry ;-)

My +2A from my childhood which I haven't seen let alone used in about 22 years was dying in it's final years of use games did work but do the build in tester it crashed on the ram checks. but it still worked for a few years until I left home and tested it about 3 years later and just got a blank screen, and I had a ZX81 that just gave the borders as if it had no bios. I wish I can find them to test them as they should be repairable.

The FR-301 is better because you can get a whole slew of different nozzles, actual replacement parts, and filters straight off Amazon - and a bunch of accessories. It will last past the knock off I guarantee it. You get what you pay for And it works better.

Hot air from a rework station is the only professional method for removing any surface mount component. Everything else is a hack that may work sometimes but can cause serious damage when it goes wrong. Surface mount caps are designed to withstand high temps in a reflow oven so hitting them with hot air shouldn't cause problems and they won't explode because they are designed with a weak spot that splits if pressure builds up.

How does the FR 301 deal with very stubborn solder? Can it remove them? My ZD 8915 struggles alot with stuborn solder and can not remove them no matter what I try to do. Applying low-melt solder or flux doesn't help either. I am interesting getting the FR 301 just to ditch my useless ZD 8915 if it can remove the most stubborn solder. Because I had to use in some occasions bruteforce methods to get rid of the stuborn solder I couldn't remove no matter what methods I tried (using flux, low-melt iron, etc.).

    • @g4z-kb7ct
      @g4z-kb7ct 18 дней назад

Very easy to deal with that. Add LEADED solder using a soldering iron. Low melt solder is expensive for a start and for a specific purpose (not the purpose you are using it for). Use hot air to heat the board first to about 100C. Just hold the hot air nozzle in one hand and the desdering tool in the other and use both at the same time. Those holes will come out so clean you may want to bang your head against a brick wall for being a noob up to that point hehe! Everything is very easy when you know how.....

I think the TED machines were as popular down under as they were anywhere else. I knew 2 people, both school teachers, that had the Plus 4 in my small town of 3000 people. Commodore was the biggest name down under for home computers. In our town we had at least one VIC-20, lots of C64s in both styles, and lots of Amiga 500s and 600s. One guy even had a SX-64.

I've heard similar before. Australia seems to have had a good amount of just about every computer you could think of. Here in the UK the Apple ii didn't really take off and the BBC was very popular. Completely the other way round in the US. But I'm Aus Apple and BBC, obviously at different stages, were all over the place. I'm sure the TED machines were just as popular there as elsewhere, but due to them being a commercial flop still pretty scarce to find now

But then again, after a very stressful day at work, coming back to a village of 40 with only the sound of the small rivers and maybe a breeze or a drizzle or the smell of grass is soooo soothing.
