Good video, I share most of your thoughts about it. Though if is my favourite story Tolkien wrote, of that we might disagree. Many people fall into a trap of thinking either one of them is without flaws and the other is the devil :D. I find that quite annoying when it comes to talking about the story.

I can't help comparing Maedhros to Turin. One was unwittingly cursed by Morgoth and the other unwittingly (I firmly believe) cursed himself. His approach to fulfilling the Oath always seemed to me to indicate certain assumptions about what the Oath intended that were not necessarily in line with the wording of the Oath. Turin always seems motivated by a sincere desire to save people, but the Curse of Morgoth twists all of his good desires to horrific conclusions. Maedhros seems motivated by an eldest son's sense of duty to his family, but the Oath slowly consumes more and more of both family and duty. I don't think it is an accident that Maedhros is the one, out of all the Noldor and all the House of Feanor who most exactly follows the course of the Doom. It was probably the only way to strip him of his assumptions. In the end, Hurin watched Turin meet his end, just as Morgoth had cursed, and Maedhros recovered a Silmaril and recognized and slew the one who had forever put the Silmarils beyond his reach, just as he had sworn.

So, in practical terms, how will this all work? Will you walk 5 miles on day one, 4 miles on day two, 5 miles on day three and 4 miles on day four in order to get your "18" miles finished? Surely you will not be walking the 18 miles in one day, right?

I read The Silmarillion (also got an American first edition for my birthday) Children of Hurin, The Peoples of Middle Earth, Unfinished Tales, the Hobbit, and the LOTR trilogy. I also listened to the audiobooks of LOTR and The Silmarillion narrated by Andy Serkis (highly recommended) and Children of Hurin narrated by Christopher Lee. I plan on reading so much more this year!

I only made it through the first third of the Fall of Numenor when I had hoped to read it all by now but I've been enjoying it and I hope to pick it up again soon. I had never gone deeper than the trilogy before so I used the excitement of its new release to motivate me to get started and I'm hoping that when I finish I'll try another. For now though I'll settle for hearing you and others talk about their personal connections to the stories as they read/reread them.

The fall of Gondolin was always one of my favorite stories from the Silmarilion. I once read one of Tolkien's earlier versions of it which had mechanical dragons attacking the walls of the city and lines of Balrogs. Amazing read...

Her story tore my heart apart

I think the time Galadriel spent being mentored by Melian was what transitioned her from the proud "I want to rule my own kingdom" Amazon Galadriel to the wise Lady of the Noldor we know and love from LotR. Although we have no details, in my head canon, Tolkien wanted to show two things: the transforming power of (God's) love and wise that is obtained from wise teachers. I think Galadriel had the equivalent of a "conversion" experience when she met and fell in love with Celeborn. That transformed her character in a positive way. Although she was far more qualified to rule over the realms her and her husband ruled over, she ceded final decisions to his authority, as Melian did to Thingol. My version of this love story is not unlike that between Ëowyn and Faramir in the Houses of Healing. That joy that Ëowyn and Galadriel felt was transformative.

Elves are immortal. They don't necessarily have to die. Luthien could have lived as long as Melian, meaning they both would have taken the Straight Road to the Undying Lands under other scenarios. As far as I recall, Melian never died. I have a theory that Melian's fana was changed to a hröa. I am pretty sure her ëala was bound to that hröa. I have always assumed that she went down to Cirdan's Haven and took one of his ships back to Aman.

I wonder if Thingol and Melian were trapped in suspended animation because Eru had to fashion a proper hröa out of her fana for Melian to give birth. It seems clear that the normal "body" of an Ainu is likely not capable of giving birth. They are not sexual at all.

I think Elu Thingol said that he didn't need to go to Valinor because the Light of the Trees was in Melian's eyes. Something like that. YET he got enticed by the Silmaril and lusted after it in his heart. That was a kind of adultery that opened him up to the Doom of Mandos, IMO.

I guess it was thingols greed and lust for the silmaril that led her flee middle earth, and also because thingols refuses to listen to her on multiple occasions.
