I think Flynn can write them well but also gets the characters wrong. Another example is Sonic releasing Metal and his reasonings in the idw comic, then getting mad at him for not turning good. Meanwhile in heroes his reasoning for letting Metal go was so they could fight again. On Sonic whining and being preachy, one of his descriptions literally says "his anger explodes with surprising consequences." On top of when we look at say Sonic Adventure Sonic just leaps into action to fight Shadow, or how he dealt with the fox bullies and didn't just lecture them.

i think it would better if instead of pastering the character everywhere we got soft years, like 2022 was kind of the year of knuckles, he was an important character in the movie, he got his frontiers prologue animation and was an important character in frontiers, so something like that for other characters like tails, amy, blaze and silver we probably be for the best

For the Metal virus arc Sonic even in adventure had emotional moments he was just private about it Like even in Black knight There are times he takes a moment before he goes to save that one “kid’s” family because he considered what he’d lose and did it anyway Second of all he’s in a Very unique situation the metal virus Fundamentally means he can’t do things normally he has to think things through and that’s the point.

With how Sonic fans are quick to turn on people and things that they once liked and vice versa, it’s only a matter of time before someone says that Ken Penders is a better Sonic writer than Ian and everyone to start agreeing in droves like a hive mind.

What Im mostly confused with the whole hate with Ian Flynn is...isnt this what we all wanted?? For YEARS I have heard CONSTANTLY that "Sega needs to hire Ian Flynn" and "Ian Flynn's work is so good in Archie, why cant he write for the games" especially after Forces. We were all ecstatic when we found out he was writting for Frontiers when it was confirmed with rumors. But now after the IDW comics have been going on and even with Frontiers, hes some how a terrible writter now? "Haha family guy references" (when thats how you call back to past events, I've seen NUMEROUS shows that do the same thing and no one complains) THIS IS WHAT WE ASKED FOR!! No wonder Sega doesnt know what to do with Sonic because it seems the fans go on and on about something for YEARS to the point that when we finally get it, suddenly its bad and has always been bad.

The problem wit the recent panel isn't so much that sonic wouldn't know wut "Gumshoe" is. He's a reader so he prob would & I know the word despite not bein much of a reader myself(haven't heard someone genuinely use this word in forever tho so this still takes me out). The problem is whether he would actually use the word & Y he's usin it here in particular. Sonic has NEVER spoken like this under ST so I have no reason to believe he'd genuinely say this. "But he's clearly jokin bout the fact that he doesn't normally say that here." U're prob right but that 1. doesn't fix the issue cus in the end he wouldn't say it unless he HAD to period, & 2. this leads into the 2nd thing I mentioned. Sonic has also never done these random wisecrack jokes before. Sonic doesn't really joke almost at all so him doin this is so off even if he didn't specifically make this joke it'd still be ooc cus Y is he makin a joke here? "But he says this h-" The example is either guna be an en written story or a poorly localized part of the og ST script in 1 of the games which means for this discussion it's effectively "invalid". I’m glad you made this post cuz too many Sonic fans be getting into stupid discourses of how Sonic should and shouldn’t act 😂

While I can sort of see the argument of a constantly-confident, snappy Sonic, stuff like the Surge example doesn’t really sit with me. Mostly because when people hail the best parts of Sonic’s character, they’ll use examples where he does actually have “lectures”. I look at Black Knight because everyone loves that Sonic- I do too- But his last lines before the credits was quite literally admonishing Merlina’s goal and to be free from worrying about fate. Something that parallels what he says to Surge, it’s just that Surge’s admonishment is longer. …I still don’t really like Lost World’s Sonic though because it kinda dumbs him down, but something like Frontiers wasn’t too bad in writing because it took that lecturing of Sonic’s and combined it with an attitude where he expressed his freedom and willingness to continue on. A lot of the dialogue is him instilling lessons into others, having simple interactions with his friends, and displaying his willingness as a hero- stuff that I feel does fit his character.

3:43 i mean to be fair the way he writes sonic in IDW and games it still feels abit distinctive and different from archie sonic i think he knows Archie sonic and game sonic are different now ofc his potrayal isn't not perfect it definitely has some flaws but it still does display most of the traits and qualities of game sonic if not 100% accurate to 2000's or perfect but it still feels quite distinctive enough to Archie sonic.

That zombot panel was some garbage I won’t lie. But I dont see the problem with his talk with surge. It’s not that long, it’s like 5 sentences. And I can’t see how it wouldn’t apply to game sonic

5:54 Personally, I don’t see what’s wrong with the metal virus example given. I mean in the context of the story he has been awake for several days running constantly so that he doesn’t succumb to his infection while at the same time, he has to watch a bunch of people get infected because he can’t help directly, helped them, and on top of all that he’s dealing with the fact that he is kind of patient zero for this entire outbreak. Of course the guy is going to start losing his cool. If he went through all of this and still was completely unfazed by any of it, that would just make him look like a bloody psychopath. I guess my mindset when it comes to how he’s written in this kind of situation is “if sonic is the wind, shouldn’t the wind be able to adapt to the environment it blows towards. Wind doesn’t just come to an obstacle and continue to blow the same way it always did. It either has to blow harder to knock the obstacle aside or it has to go around it. The wind must be able to adjust.” You can’t expect him to always be cool and collected under every circumstance. I think it’s good that we see the occasional moment of weakness, as it makes his moments of strength all the more meaningful. (Besides if we’re gonna be fair, Sonic what’s clearly off putt by his Werehog form in unleashed and optional dialogue with Professor pickle makes it clear. He was desperate to get rid of it implying that he was not handling it nearly as well as it may appear on the surface.) All that being said, feel free to have your own opinion on the matter

4:19 I don’t see what the issue here is. He’s stating what his beliefs are. I mean we’ve seen Sonic give his perspective on situations and life in general in several boss fights and scenes. Yes, it’s a little wordier than usual, but I still feel like nothing said here is out of character for him.

As much as i like movie sonic and archie sonics.. I feel like its better if they didnt add that the idw comics and especially sonic prime are canon to the games which it feels off to me. Like i like game sonic as he was, and stripping the character and its identity away just doesn't sit well. Im also tired of people sending hate towards others for having different opinions. Like sure i like movie sonic and archie but theyre not game sonic. Like they can exist, nobody said its wrong for movie sonic acting the way he is. Hes movie SONIC. I disagree with the direction of having the IDW series be canon to the games thus merging comic Sonic and Game Sonic into one entity as well. It would be better if they were just their own separate things. But given the chaotic nature and inconsistencies of this franchise, the idea likely won’t last forever and will just change into something else eventually.

Sonic and shadow and all the other characters were at their peak was when they was being written by shiro maekawa Shiro maekawa wrote sa2, the storybook games, and basically sonic when he was at his peak The best way to see sonic’s character is to look at every game from the 2000s, cause I explores every part of sonic’s personality and every part of sonic’s personality is combined in the Japanese version of sonic X so I say what game to look at to see sonic’s character is The cool and edgy one that everyone agrees that they love the most sa2, storybook games, both riders, and Sonic X If you wanna see a softer side, look at games like 06 and unleashed If you wanna see sonic being more harsh look at sa1 And the thing that combines all of them is sonic X which the reason why combined is because it was written by shiro maekawa and the other Japanese writer that wrote 06 and unleashed So when they’re both writng for sonic we get best of both worlds Shiro does the more edgy and cool version along with sonic actually being awesome and having that side and being but we get to see even more soft side with kiriko (sorry if I spelled that name wrong) With Shiro and kiriko both working on sonic X and the characters is the reason why we got sonic’s full personality instead of looking at one part of it Idw isn’t really accurate and it kind of just pushes me away from the franchise or the characters these deliveries and sonic just letting every villain go is dumb Like sonic doesn’t gaf he does whatever he wants it doesn’t care what anyone else thinks, and the fact that there are a moments where he’s gaslighting shadow and espio just sucks Just bring back Shiro or have Ian Flynn do even more research
