    When you are on the trail and your gear needs replacing how do you get access to it?

    • @alan_long
      @alan_long 7 месяцев назад

      That's a tough one honestly. Things like shoes you can kind of guestimate and mail yourself in advance. But when a sleeping pad leaks you can try and order one to the next town and pick it up but it's pretty stressful tbh. Or if you're lucky to be near a bigger town you can try to get something in person which is faster and easier but logistically a bit complicated. There's not really a good answer. Just depends on what it is and where you are.

    the big three...pack, shelter, and sleep system...the gatewood poncho, provides three uses....rain cover, pack cover and shelter....at about 11 ozs.....jacks r better stealth quilt....is a sleeping bag and can be used as a poncho, replacing the puffy.....saving weight and precious space, in the pack, maybe allowing for a smaller pack...

    Really enjoyed this video, love how worn down and used your gear looked because it shows that you use them heavily and it works for you. I've watched several other gear videos and I didn't notice how nice and clean other people's gear looked until I watched this one. I can really believe that you hiked the PCT with this gear. I also love how you use basic everyday items like a trash bag or plastic baggie for storing things. I don't backpack (going to try next spring!) but I travel with only a small backpack, and when I first started, I used ziplock bags and other containers I had in my house for organization and storage. So it's nice to see a pro do the same! The only thing that I raised an eyebrow at was the clothing but that's because I personally get cold very easily. I would definitely add base layers and a puffy to my kit. Overall, so cool to see that you hiked the entire PCT with so little!

    • @alan_long
      @alan_long Год назад

      Thanks for the comment! There's so many fancy things marketed towards hikers and backpackers but honestly a lot of it just isn't worth it imo. Save the money and spend it on the really important bigger items! I think people should always hike with what keeps them safe and comfortable. Obviously there is a difference between weekend backpacking and long distance hiking! You should always pack according to your trip and what works for you but more often than not people can be comfortable with less than they think :)

    This short lifespan is a problem with these types of packs. But the price there really should last many years. And yes, even a multi med hike should not wear them out. Problem is the materials are so lightweight they are just not durable. I kind of feel like if people were simply and better physical condition(including myself) the weight to the pack wouldn’t be such a big deal. Especially for young people. Back in the 70s when I started hiking my pack was probably double the weight of this and it didn’t cause me any issues.

    • @alan_long
      @alan_long 2 года назад

      I wouldn't really consider this pack to have a short life, I've had the pack for 5 years and just retired it. I used it before the pct and well after for all kinds of things, daily gym bag, climbing crag pack and backpacking. To hold up to all of that for 5 years plus a complete thru hike is impressive to me. I agree physical condition is important but there is no need to put your body under unnecessary stress carrying things that won't be used for the majority of the time spent on a long trail. Most of your time is spent walking so have a comfortable time doing it imo.

    Always bring and use two poles for hiking at all times one It will almost help prevent you from rolling your ankle falling slipping tripping when walking on slippery rocks accross a river or down hill or up hill on slippery leaves and loose dirt and sand surfaces I love hiking poles, I'm 30 and been using hiking poles since I was 11 in bouscouts. Only difference between my pack and yours is that I have a fishing pole that is telescoping rod and reel with a tiny tackle box with baits and hooks ECT and have fished some of thespt amazing secluded areas you could imagine, bass fished under a giant waterfall and fished for rainbow trout and salmon in a beautiful rivers and ponds on the trails plus it gives you a nice little dinner when you catch one or two nice fish

    thanks for not doing your part to keep our bears and hikers safe....NOT OK

    • @alan_long
      @alan_long 2 года назад

      @neda nother Never had any bear issues and respectfully disagree. Bears in Yosemite are known to roll bear cans off cliffs to break them open and get at the food. The best thing I can do is let a bear know that humans shouldn't be associated with food in the first place. Bear cans are a deterrent. Your first line of defense is intelligent actions and proper planning. I didn't cook at all on the pct, I kept my food in odor resistant bags, and slept with my food. If an animals is going to be going after my food I would want to know about it, not stand by and watch as a bear tosses my can around for hours while I wait and hope I can get my food back to keep hiking. On top of that you can look at the rec.gov map of where bear cans are required in the Sierra, it's all of Yosemite and select pockets elsewhere. If bear safety was truly a concern bear cans and required food storage would be instated all over the Sierra and the PNW. The reason bears are an issue in Yosemite is from decades of visitors a) not picking up their trash. b) feeding animals. I'd love to hear a more in depth explanation of what "not doing your part" actually means. If you want to support bear safety you should probably be more concerned with habitat destruction, human encroachment, hunting permits, and climate change.
