    Great build ,I am at Work Near Ft Mac Plotting my build when i get home to BC,.Its great you have your son involved .I am curious why you put he plastic on the outside ? I was thinking all the nooks and crannies between wood and plastic are place for paint build up which could haunt you later when it flakes ? I was also thinking of a positive pressure Booth to keep dust out rather than the tendency to draw it in. Its great to see Canadian content.Your thoughts on having plastic on inside ?

    • @johnniemo
      @johnniemo 13 дней назад

      Thanks for the comments. I'm not sure I ever gave plastic on the inside much thought. You could do it that way. The downsides I could see would depend how you fasten it. If you still wrap it like I did, it will withstand the negative pressure fine. The other downside is you can't fasten things like hooks, shelves and lights as easily. I did experience a lot of paint dust gathering in the wood etc. But it never affected my paint quality. I have a second video on this booth that might be worth watching.

    solar value calculation. Know your total cost per watt installed. Local cost of electricity. Cost of money and annual solar power. Example public data for Calgary shows systems making from about 800 to 1200kWh per year per kw of installed solar. Example: 10kW of solar at $3/watt is $30,000. Could make from 8000 to 12000kWh/yr. If local power is 10c/kWh that would earn from $800 to $1200/yr. Solar panel life expectancy 25 years. A 25 yr mortgage for $30,000 would be annual payments of about $2100 per year to save maybe $800.

    • @johnniemo
      @johnniemo 28 дней назад

      @@Nelsongrantscams I think you're missing a key point. In the summer you sell the excess power at 30 cents not 10. I produce about $30/day in the summer time. I ran the numbers and my break even was around 9 cents for a "buy" rate. I don't yet have a full year under my belt so I can't give the final analysis.

    I'm in the Calgary area but rural and I just installed solar and went operational this past September with my first phase of 5.4K panels. I have another 9K ground mount under construction for a total of 14.4K operational next spring. I have room on my inverter for another 5K future expansion if needed. I went solar because the power grid is becoming less stable with the growing demand because of population growth the electrification of vehicles and the political vilification of fossil fuel energy. This past year Alberta has had two emergency power alerts and some area's had brown-outs. There's no question in my mind power rates will be increasing in the future especially during peak usage times. Just look at California as an example to see of what I believe is eventually coming to Alberta. In rural area's power outages are more frequent and without power we have no water because electrical water well pumps. I went with a grid tied battery backup system where my system uses solar first- grid power 2nd and during any power grid failures, solar first- battery power 2nd or a combination of both or just battery if there is no solar to feed my loads usage. Both the solar panels and the grid re-charges the batteries when available. I have it set up where the batteries run the house loads overnight and then recharge the next day during sunny periods to be ready again for the next night. It gives me about 2 days of house usage on the batteries alone during a grid outage which I will eventually expand to 4-5 days in the future. My system does not allow solar energy to feed back to the grid so I am not selling back to the power company. This made things much simpler with the power company's red tape as all I had to do is prove my system cannot energize back to the grid during a power outage and they were happy. I researched, designed and sourced the solar equipment for the system myself. The people I purchased the equipment from included the design drawings for the electrical permit and I hired a local Electrician with solar experience which was very difficult to find but I lucked out and found a good one. I did not participate with any of the government programs because they had limited grants which were already taken at the time. Besides I do not want more regulatory eyes in my life and they had lots of hoops to jump through for only a $5000 grant so I happily paid for everything out of my own pocket. Although I do not expect a financial return on my investment, I kinda expect one day it may give me one. Right now if it is only peace of mind or not having to worry about rolling outages and this system helps isolates me from any future huge power charge increases, that's mission accomplished for me. I know where I stand. Since installing solar I now have options I didn't have previously. The grid is now my backup instead of being 100% relied on. That's piece of mind for me.

    The main reason I went with solar in 2015 was because banks were not paying much on my investments. And the little I was earning was taxable. I was employed back in 2015. I pulled 27K out of my funds for my solar. I'm now retired and enjoying my passive income from my solar. Not having a power and gas bill allows me to pull less from my RIFF accounts. This keeps me in the lower net income bracket. I get the Carbon and GST rebaits now. I have 36 Enphase inverters. I had one fail during a FW update. Two others stopped performing. Corroded MC4 connectors. I already had spare connectors and my own crimpers. My inverters have a 25 year warranty. I'm 64 and had no issues climbing on the roof. Took me 15 min's to replace the connectors.

    • @johnniemo
      @johnniemo 3 месяца назад

      I fully intend to look after this myself once the Zeno warranty runs out. I may also expand the system if I get an EV. My current mission now is trying to cut my usage. At 6 cents, I never cared. Now with all this money invested, I'm starting to care.

      So that tree has started to become an issue around Oct 20. It cuts across the south facing panels on the house and then the garage. So it's going to affect me for about 1/3 of the year.

I made up my own using summer grade bar n chain oil, paraffin wax, and a toilet wax ring, heated to 35c. It worked good for a couple of years then needed to reapply . Noxuldol seems to work but hard to work with. So far Surface shield does it all, sprays easy, it creeps and last for at least three years in high impact areas like wheel wells. It's cheaper than Noxudol. Thanks for the video. Next hoax pandemic, tell Trudeau and his totalitarian government to go F^&k themselves. We're not closing down the country again. im using the same primer on my celica 1977. what i would do when blocking, after hitting raw metal stop. Finish up the panel, and filler or prime again to reblock. spot primer-ing it then blocking to blend would even work if time/money does not allow for more primer. I would only wetsand when body filler or metal is all covered and not exposed. your DA sanding method to even out the scratches makes good sense but only if the surface is 100% to your liking ready to up the next grit or lay primer/sealers

      The method should work. As long as you reinforce the structure a bit, those bottle jacks will lift an incredible amount of weight. You could do three cross beams to be safe. You can order custom LVL beams in whatever size you want. Since I did this, I came up with all sorts of improvements. For example, you could lift from the outside.... you could lift off the roof.... you could use an automotive 4 post lift.... So many options. It's not as scary as it seems.

    You think you might be interested in renting that booth out?

      Yes - so long as you can pick it up.

    What fans do you use to blow the fumes out? Do you recommend if I should get 1 or 2 fans as one for blow air in and one for blow fumes out?

      Such a well timed question! I actually just re-assembled the paint bay a second time and used a single fan this time. I have found it's simply not enough. If you are painting something as large as a vehicle, you want two fans. The big reason is you want to keep the concentration of ignitable gases to a minimum. Airflow could quite literally save you. I just use garden variety box fans. However if you could get access to an old belt driven furnace fan, that would be the cat's meow. In that way you get the motor out of the paint fumes.

    John, glorious afternoon greetings. Thank you for your video and it brought me info I need as that is what is important. I've never used one of these and at the rental shop today I showed them a picture and unfortunately the worker didn't have the info, but said his partner would. I had a slab poured with a hump of about 3/4 of an inch needing removal, but it goes for I reckon at least 20 feet and about 6 foot wide - yes, never use that guy again and don't recommend them. Certainly! I would anticipate if that took you 1 1/2 hours my project will be a very full day and I'll have a sore back at the end of it? Really not much else one can do except jack hammer and don't want to possibly hurt the integrity of the slab. Thank you and God bless! Hoping you're liking that floor you put in. I've installed a few of them for clients and they are amazingly durable to a degree.

      Thanks for the greetings! This is an old video :) If you are buzzing down a high center, as you are doing, I'd consider how you want to refinish it at the end. It isn't the prettiest surface. I still love the Swisstrax, but it's not the cheapest route. My favourite part is how the water drains underneath and the floor is never cold on your feet. It changes the experience of winter. However for the summer time, it gathers a LOT of dust and rocks and gets fairly dirty. You can't just pressure wash it, as it rains debris down all over the place. You have to remove it and clean them outside. But given everything, I'd for sure do the flooring again. It's just so great for the winter.

      @@johnniemo I'm installing a vinyl water proof tile floor with an attached pad. I'll add another pad under it for picking up for variations with the floor to help with the product spec. Yes, I can understand with your Swisstrax dust and all. Yes, for the moisture issue it is perfect. We'll see what all happens, but again thanks for your video. God bless!

      @@johnniemo Thank you. It's really interesting doing this. I've shot video too. Hopefully I can edit something together, but this is nuts! I've been at it for about a hour and exhausting! I have a super humpy unflat slab! Think my big shop vac doesn't suck enough - oh well! Padded gloves would be really good to wear - maybe my lifting at the gym gloves as I have blisters forming on the palm of hand.

    I had occasionally watched the Lakeside guy. He’s about as far as you can get from restoration type work though. And he uses that one K glazing potty like you and the one K primer. To each their own. My one comment that might help you out is that those long blocks are meant to be mostly used in a straight line but not a complete straight line because they dig scratches but you want to go side to side or the X pattern as little as possible, otherwise you’ve turned an 18 inch block into a 3 inch block that’s just really wide. Your work will get better when you do.

      Yup, great advice. Thanks for the comment. In the heat of the moment it's easy to forget your goal isn't eliminating the guide coat. Your goal is even and consistent perpendicular blocking. I've only ever used the Valspar, so I'm quite un-informed about what other products work like. I think if you do this every week, you'd benefit from a re-useable product. For me, this is only my second ever job, so I am okay working with the harder 2k primer from Valspar (and the higher price).
