      Ha! No doubt. The only way I get em new at a great price these days is in used bookshops. Picked this one up for less than 40 bucks Canadian. For double the price of a paperback, I have no issues. It's when they cost more than a true first printing of the novel that I start seeing red.

      It sure as heck DOES sound like blasphemy! The feeling of the cover's cloth in-hand, the silky smoothness of the interior paper, the luxurious textured photo paper used for the images, and the smell of the thing! The smell of it! It would all be missing from the electronic book. For this audacious suggestion, I name you the new "Heretic of Dune (Books)"!

      I would assume that if sales stay strong, they'll have to take a look at it. It would certainly allow the artists to lean into the weird and surreal. Perhaps they could look to launch the next trilogy around the release of Villeneuve's third film...I think the hype around the release of Dune Part Two helped them seel serious stacks of their version of Messiah!

    I can't upgrade all of my favorite novels to Folio Society editions for two reasons. The first reason is that not all of my favorites are published by Folio. The second reason is that with many of my favorite books, I prefer other editions and my space is limited, so I'm not going to own multiple copies of the same novel. For example, my top five favorite novels are: The Time Machine, The Road by Cormac McCarthy, 1984, Moby Dk or The Whale (misspelled to keep yt from blocking my comment), and Dani Noir by Nova Ren Suma. Of those, Dani Doir never has and never will get a Folio Society edition. While I chose Folio for 1984, and will probably go with Folio for The Road, I chose the Easton Press for Moby Dk. I just felt like the leather over wood with the silk end pages was more appropriate for Moby. I also plan on upgrading my copy of The Time Machine with the Easton Press. Among some of my other favorite books, I'll probably upgrade Jurassic Park and The Lost World through Folio Society, and I recently ordered The Neverending Story from Folio (it hasn't arrived yet). Another exception is A Christmas Carol. Because I prefer the replica of its very first printing, I won't upgrade with either Folio or Easton. On another note, I recently heard about the Limited Edition Club, where you buy real first editions. I haven't checked them out yet, but I plan to. Though I probably can't afford to buy anything from Limited Edition Club. 😢

      Thank you for the kind words and support. I really do try to look at the books in a methodical and systematic way - I'm actually borrowing from action figure reviews, believe it or not! They are always so predictable in their approach; they go over the sculpt and paint and articulation of the toy, and always in the same order even though many elements remain the same. The interest for me comes from the variations within that structure. I'm glad to know that how I'm doing it is 'working' for viewers like yourself.

    • @Upgradeyourbooks
      @Upgradeyourbooks 4 месяца назад

      You’re welcome! And you’re right - the changes are minimal and (in my opinion) almost always for the better. The colour is tightened up throughout so there is no missed sections, which only occurred in the original due to technology and time constraints. Beyond that a few of the harsh pinks, purples, and greens have been toned down to more subdued hues. Unlike so many other classic comic book recolours, I’d call this one both “thoughtful” and “conservative”. That’s the most respectful and appropriate way to do it!

      My pleasure. The new productions with all the wonderful coloured art and the modern techniques are really cool. But there is something I especially appreciate about classic book illustration: lino and wood cut prints, pencil drawings, and top amongst them - pen & ink. The pure tactile artistic skill is so impressive - maybe because I’ve dabbled in them all myself? It makes what these traditional master-illustrators can do so awe-inspiring.

    I love Folio books but I haven’t bought any since the old mail order days when you got a bunch of books for 20 bucks with your promise to buy 4 at regular club prices in the year. Example; they gave me a 2 vol set of Robert Graves Mythology and the full 8 vol in 2 slipcases of The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire. Now they no longer doo that so it’s less enticing to spend that money. I had mostly bought classics so that I could pass them down. The Dune books look beautiful. I have the old paperbacks with the Vincent DiFate cover illustrations from the 70s and 80s, those will always be special to me.

      I buy most of my Folio’s second hand, and every once in a while there is an old card from the era you are describing tucked into the book as a page marker. Always an interesting artifact to come across - it would have been neat to be a member of the Society back then!

      They are really nice. And they do cost a lot. They can only be an occasional luxury in my life. But the build and the binding quality is such that I don't fret a bit when reading them. I'm not the world's carefullest reader, and they hold up quite impressively to my mauling and thrashing!

      Ha! Believe it or not, I actually did watch a video on it before hand. But you know how it is - you read it 'wrong' in your head for years, and you can't truly unlearn it. It becomes your core 'cannon' pronunciation. I tried to fix it in my subsequent Dune Messiah video, but even there I can hear my personal pronunciations creep through. Made-up words and places are the worst - I often reduce "Tleilaxu" to a half-grunt that starts with "T".

    For your next video, we'll be comparing the new Porsche to a '73 Pinto Hatchback from a kit. Does Folio ever have sales? Because I'd like to buy more than one book at a time and still save on shipping. Also, has _The Name of the Rose_ ever been issued by them?

    • @Upgradeyourbooks
      @Upgradeyourbooks 7 месяцев назад

      Ha. They do have sales, usually a couple times a year - the New Year sale and the Summer sale. However, it’s pretty rare that there’s actually a title I’m after at a reduced price in those sales. They tend to feature the less popular selections. Because I don’t live in the UK, the best deal that I typically wait on is the free shipping promo that occurs a few times throughout the year. And yes indeed, they have done The Name of the Rose. I believe it has been printed 4 times and is illustrated by my main man Neil Packer (he also did the Claudius novels, One Hundred Years of Solitude, Catch-22, the Divine Comedy, and the recent Shakespeare collection from Folio). You’ll have to hunt on the aftermarket for The Name of the Rose though. It’s not very rare and should only run you around 100 US including shipping and fees.

      The artwork is pretty great on this one; the artist was well-selected to align with the book’s discussions about art itself. Finally, I just wanted you to know that I haven’t forgotten about your past suggestion for me to take a look at the Kafka Folio books. They are the talent that drive the illustrated book market, and I'm in awe of what they do. In fact, whenever it's possible, I reach out to them to let them know about featuring their images and information in my reviews. More often than not they get back to me with kind words of support and thanks.
