Thank you! I was baffled to learn that the version of Watchmen I've always read is a recolor. I found some scans of the original online, but I thought they were more saturated due to the quality of the scan itself. I personally think the changes are small enough to go unnoticed at first glance
You’re welcome! And you’re right - the changes are minimal and (in my opinion) almost always for the better. The colour is tightened up throughout so there is no missed sections, which only occurred in the original due to technology and time constraints. Beyond that a few of the harsh pinks, purples, and greens have been toned down to more subdued hues. Unlike so many other classic comic book recolours, I’d call this one both “thoughtful” and “conservative”. That’s the most respectful and appropriate way to do it!
Thanks Nicolas. I don’t do many comic titles - I mostly cover deluxe novels, but when I cover comics I like to be really thorough! I’m wrestling with Kingdom Come right now, trying to figure out exactly how I want to approach it.
Agreed. I like those old colours. Not sure what Brian Bolland was thinking (maybe it was for the payday) but it really seemed to shift the tone of the artwork. It didn’t feel as ‘special’ after the recolouring and I’m glad we can still get a new copy with the OG colours.
@@teddybeer6206 I like that. That’s a really perfect way of summarizing how I feel about it. The garish Watchmen-like colours add a touch of crazy that feels at home for a Joker story. The updated desaturated colour palette makes it lean towards the same look of every other Batman comic.
@@adityamukherjee4794 You could go with the International Edition too. I don’t own it, but from what I understand, it is just a hardcover version of the TPB. The nice thing about the Deluxe Edition is that it is slightly larger, so it shows off the art well. Deluxe Editions are my personal favorite format to read comics because of this added scale. It is also very generous with the ‘bonus’ content at the end of the book, and I’m not sure that the International Edition offers much of that.

Nice comparison. Thanks for sharing this!
My pleasure Rob - I hope you found it useful. If nothing else, I sure was thorough in this comparison!
Fantastic video. 🤘

Thanks.
My pleasure.
Can you find the “smiley face” avatar in the video?
Touching an original single issue WITHOUT GLOVES??!!!! How COULD you suh???!!
Ha! I know...value ruined forever! What was I thinking, actually handling it and flipping through it?
I think year one looks really good with both colors but killing joke needs the og colors

Check out the latest video on Cartoonist Kayfabe, Brian Bolland explains why he updated the colors.
@@hollabackgod Thanks for the tip - imma go watch that right now!
Agreed. The OG Killing Joke colors felt like a Joker story but the updated colors feel like a Batman story...

So as a beginner what should i buy
I'd go with the Deluxe Edition myself - it's a happy medium between the cheap TPB and the expensive Absolute.
@@Upgradeyourbooks what about the international edition?
