Ptolus Random Encounter Generator & Homebrew Submission Encounters Form Monte Cook Games
I have been running play by email Traveller RPG since 2002. I have not tried chat gpt.
@@KhanTrav play by email for over 20 years?! That's a hell of a campaign!
@@D20Pub To be fair, I have been running PBEM Traveller Campaign since 2002. Players come and go. My current iteration has a little over 18 months or so.
My homebrew for leveling characters requires 1D6 days per level+ plus 1D6 days per their character tier to train. The only cost they incure is cost of living (food and board plus entertainment (per life style chart).
That's a cool system! I forgot to make that point in the video. Sapping adventurer's money is HARD when they have no downtime. But if they have to think about paying for stuff for a month, or a few months, at a time, then the cost of living comes into play.
The best thing about AI is that I don't have to start with a blank piece of paper. During sessions and while playing I am very creative.. but during preparation I often can't get myself to start the process. That's when ChatGPT comes to the rescue.
@@Frederic_S True that. I've started using prompts as simple as, "I want to do something interesting for my group but I have no idea what." And it's great to have something respond.
I have an Jotun in my campaign that is about to be made into "the Scion of Stronmaus"...... O.o
I do all of these things... so, that must mean I know what I am doing...
@@grandmasterrodimus1480 Sure does! I'm guessing that's why your name is Grand Master 😉🤓
@D20Pub salute
I ran a Storm King's Thunder campaign, where the characters met up for a wake. It turned out that the characters all shared the same father, a changeling. They were tasked to go to a village to receive their inheritance because there wasn't enough time for the inheritance to arrive before the wake. The village was attacked by giants and the campaign went from there. The campaign unfortunately ended in a TPK. The following campaign that I ran was a homebrew and the BBEG was the supposedly dead father, who captured an NPC that was the SKT character's sibling.
I was thinking about this but more from an Entrepreneurial aspect. Like the bard writes a song and through banking Copyright or something magical like that if another bard hears it and sings it the Bard gets however much gold those bards make and maybe a percentage of money made, something miniscule like a couple copper per gold piece made. expanding that idea to other classes too.
@@mileslugo6430 Haha! That's an epic idea 😅 Magical copyright monitoring 😁 The money just shows up in Hammersong Vaults or something
My group and I decided at the start of our 5e Ptolus campaign 3 years ago that they needed training to level up. But I settled on a week on average. I find that our in game time still flies by. If we play another campaign I think I'll try to be a bit more abstract, like when you finish an "adventure", we flash forward a month or more before the next adventure. Then each player spends a few minutes narrating what they've done with this time. That approach would feel weird to me in Ptolus though, as we don't have strict starts and ends to adventures, they're just always exploring the city.
I hear you. I just wanted to stretch out our timeline to make things feel more real. I also wanted to play into things like the seasons changing and other holidays and events. Going from level 5 to 14 in 4 months of game time allowed for NONE of that :D
Thanks for this useful video! The new Bastion system will work awesomly with this :)
Is that a DND supplement or a completely separate RPG rule system?
@@D20Pub It's a new system introduced in the 2024 DMG, akin to Matt Colville's "Strongholds and Followers" book. In short, it acts as a stronghold/home base that the players can develop over time and use to earn passive income, craft items, train skills and so on. It also feels like it would thrive in a game with a stretched-out timeline like you've described in this video, as "bastion turns" occur once every 7 game days (or longer at the DM's discretion), and crafting items in the new 2024 rules can take a considerable amount of time as well.
@mattbriddell9246 oh cool! I LOVE strongholds and followers 😍
Sounds good. My main concern is how much money it should cost.
@@thunderflare59 I guess that's relative based on your campaign. If you're a big giver, probably more and vice versa.
The Level Up is the show of your progress from the adventures and exploration culminating into the experience gained to have those new abilities, powers, and spells. If you incorporate that as part of the adventuring, it's more fun.
@@sketchasaurrex4087 We do that as well. My players do a good job of talking about the next level's abilities, like they are researching and thinking and training. Then they spend downtime training and doing more fun stuff
I like the idea, but what kind of price and cost should we use, and how does it scale at higher levels?
@rcschmidt668 I hate giving this answer, but it's up to you and your game. 😬 I haven't been using a fixed calculation. I have just gone with what makes sense based on their current situation. For higher levels it will be harder and harder to find teachers, and many of them won't want money. Which means the favors they ask for are perfect hooks for adventures 😍
@ Well, thanks for the response. Looks like we need some thought and a talk at our table.
@rcschmidt668 For sure. My guys are all over the map. Some of them paid for memberships to the Citadel of Might for training. Some have kind of their own study (divine casters). And one spends a ton of money and time on books. They also have businesses that cost money, so time means costs.
I uploaded Mythic to my custom GPT. Its pretty good at coming up with interesting stories. If you dont like the direction its going, just start over later and tweak your prompts
@@AliciaGuitar Very cool!
When you need to slow down the pace and have players who love to deepen their characters, DT Training is great. It's costly which is why folks seek out wealth. It may require key NPCs which can engage players too. BTW, love the reference to Matt Colville's book. You should cross link to him and maybe link to the book for folks to find it online too.
@@sur3fir3 I'll do that for sure. I love all his books and videos 😁
I like the system but I think it mostly fell out favor due to the change in average campaign structure. Most people had stopped running player driven dungeon crawls in favor of epic quests and they usually have a time crunch that doesn't align with having to stop to level.up
I struggled with this in my Ptolus Calling campaign. The time crunch helped ramp up the tension, but it also made that short timeline of level jumping seem weird. My new method is to have short-term time crunches for specific tasks, then draw out the in-between events.
At least for me, not having time to level up is not a problem. It makes the sense of urgency that much more real!
@elfhunter6 I get that. That's exactly what happened with the calling campaign. I had constant time pressures on them. But I think that's still doable with breaks in between. It's entirely up to what you and your players want though
Absolutely great and functional advise! Thank you!
It's all about making that character progression feel earned. Do you think you'll use this method? Or do you already?
You sound just like Boogie 2998. Can you do Francis?
@@bunnycatch3r I don't know any of those names 🤣

Are you using ChatGPT in your games?
@@D20Pub kind off
@@rock_ok person of few words 😉
oh ok. I'm doing solo RPG since my imagination is uber wild I could only express it in a few words. chatGPT made a Frankenstein out of my ideas and it's fun reading I made copies of it in my excel format to track it all down. I'm using Excel as my Map maker too .fun fact you can make a complete house CAD like appearance buildings houses but trees I have a hard time with it. time doesn't synchronize with others so. yeah this chat good enough.
chatgpt I mean. wink wink
I too have been trying to figure out how to get a banner-map with my Ptolus files. I used some software to combine the available files and now have a 4'x6' PDF that is abotu 234MB wondering what you used to have a file of almost a gigabyte Locally, I have priced out vinyl maps at FedEx office and Office Depot. They are pretty much in the ballpark of what you paid
Sweet map!
Thanks!
I'm studying up for a Ptolus campaign and your channel's been great! (That book is a LOT)
@@scottbrewer474 That's awesome! Have you gotten access to my website as well? What about joining the discord channel? Have you seen my videos about the chat? GPT based chat bot on my website?
Anyone saying using AI kills creativity, doesnt know how to use AI and are being left behind. You can engineer your prompts to have AI be as involved as you want it to be in the creative process, even the process of controlling that balance of creativity between you and the AI, requires creativity. Or you can just get it to do everything without any real input or guidance, and you get your soulless mess. It's as creative as you are.
@@archnme89 I agree with you. I've fed it all my notes and all the posts from my play by post game. That made it much better but it still has issues. The custom assistant I built for my Ptolus website is working amazing. It's been really helpful but it can't do anything without a person at the helm ☺️
More DM's need to just use the villains already in the MM. They stink at creating bad guys. They are usually over powered and unbeatable. Then they ask in DND Beyond forums, if the monster was unbalanced/OP. 🙄🙄
@@The_RealWilliam I have the exact opposite problem. I think my BBEGs are going to TPK and then the group kills them way too fast 😑
@@D20Pub 😂
Im using ChatGPT to bounce ideas off and make monsters of different AC than they appear in MM. Or helping me give a monster another flavor, like a mountaintroll from lotr instead of the normal dnd troll
@@Lord_Jan_Vejlin Awesome uses! I've been literally talking to it about ideas, asking it what it thought and asking it to make suggestions. It's been fun. Another method to brainstorm. It's also suggested monsters based on current needs, even told me about a monster I had never heard of that fit perfectly for the encounter my guys were going into
just tonight i was playing arround with the ideas for fighting pits in a thieves den where players can bet. I asked it about it and it came up with ideas for the betting system and player parpicipation in the pits
@Lord_Jan_Vejlin That's epic! I had it generate gross income and costs for running a DND tavern 😁
I feed chatgpt my pdfs and ask it for stuff out of it as I do Prep for sessions, so instead of generic stuff it's ideas fit in perfectly into my setting and incorporate npcs from other notes and matches the vibes. Think so many of the haters have only tried basic prompting for generic stuff
@@GodOfMoxie This is what I've done as well. I did the custom assistant because I was sick of having to start new chats and upload 20 documents each time. Plus, the custom assistant is giving me way better answers than my paid subscription of ChatGPT where I upload all the documents into each chat. How about you? It's doing well?
That sounds pretty cool, not bothered to make anything custom assistant but will check out how to set that up now, to not have to re-upload again.
Also been using card conjure and ai image gens to make and print cards for magic items for my player.
@GodOfMoxie 🙂 nice
@GodOfMoxie I've already done it for Ptolus. Do you need one for a different setting?

Music is probably too loud 🔊 ... My bad
It's not that bad dw :)
@imfastboi thanks 👍
Sorry for the bad audio sync up. Not sure what happened
Oh. So Ptolis is an RPG where there is a huge cuty and it gets into political intreague. That is pretty interesting. I perfer to play in wide open natural settings. My favorite examples of this is World of Warcraft and Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild. However I think an urban setting would work too. Ptolus does remind me of Ravnica wihich is one of my favorite planes of Magic the Gathering. I can confirm that an urban setting is capable of having lots of variety. Magic the Gathering has a system of five colors. There is green, red, black, blue and white. That is used to vary the kinds of characters instead of classes. The ten factions of Ravnica, called guilds, represent all possible pairs of colors. This video claims that even nature based characters, like druids, have a place in an urban setting. I can confirm that too. Green is the color associated with nature. Even that has plenty of representation. There are little points in the video that does reminind me of green guilds. The main one is the lush areas in the city. These are the parks. Even NYC has a huge park. That is like Selesnya, the green and white guild. Another part of the video is the sewers. That is like Golgari, the green and black guild. Another part of the video is the waterways. That is like Simic, green and blue guild. Another part of the video is about how barbarians can be welcomed in the city, as long as they behave. That is like Gruul, the green and red guild. Gruul tends to hang out in the outskirts of the city. They take over what little wildrnes the plane of Ravnica has. A big part of nature in Magic the Gathering is land cards. They usually depict a variety of natural environments. All players need a sizable chunk of land cards in thier deck in order to finction. Green decks are those that are the best at using land. That is thier greatest strength. They have abilities to play extra land cards. They also have creatures that can function like land cards. In Ravnica, land cards have pictures of various parts of the city. Yet they still function the same way. Ravnica The first DND book I ever got was Guldmaster's Guide to Ravnica. It was a crossover book. That was really cool, and my imagination went wild. Ptolis may be like that, exept more depth and detail. The book is really big and thick. This video talked about worldbuilding instead of mechanics. So I don't know how this game plays. I think the sprawling city setting is interesting enough to be worth checking out.
I am getting cool ideas here. One thing I like about cities is that they tend to be be more liberal in politics. I am a liberal myself. Cities have a very crowded and diverse environment. So people have to get used to that variety, and get along with other kinds of people. They become less fearful and hateful. This leads to having a more PC mindset, which makes them more liberal. It is actually the isolated rural people that tend to be more xenophobic. They lack that kind exposure. They tend to be more conservative. It is cool that Ptolis has a wide variety of fantasy races. That is like what happens in real life, but with a fantasy twist. It is weird for drow to be banned. That part gives me an idea for a campaign. I love elves including drow. I find it really disturbing that drow are treated as an evil race in the older version of DND. Evil races in general are messed up. It would be cool to subvert this trend. Maybe the reason why drow are shot on site in Ptolis is due to racism and police brutality. It is like what happens to urban black people in real life. There could even be a story like Zootopia. That would be so cool. The player group can have all the characters, or at least one of them, work in the city guard. That is the closest thing medieval fantasy has to a police department. The players solve a mystery of missing drow. The mystery is what the story is all about. Then it is reviewed that the missing drow are imprisoned and/ or killed by racist people. Ooh! There can even be a twist where the villain is a regular elf. Regular light skinned elves are usually good guys. So this is unexpected. It does make sense though. In World and Warcraft and DND the light elves and dark elves don't like each other. They split off long ago in the lore. I don't know any deep lore on Ptolis yet. However I can imagine the same scenario happening. So a light elf could be the mastermind of the missing drow, because they have such a big racial grudge. There can even be a movement that pushes back against this villainy. It can be called Drow Lives Matter. Oh I got another campaign idea. There can be a campaign exploring religion. The video mentioned some parts of the city with holy people. That can be where they have fancy churches and that kind of thing. There are certain urban areas in real life that are heavily focused on religion. Vatican City in the the bigger city of Rome is perhaps the most famous example. Other examples are Jerusalem, Mecca and maybe even Salt Lake City. There can be a campaign like this. The villains are perhaps a group of corrupt religious people. The good guys can represent the good parts of religion. Knowing the differences between the two is an interesting thing to explore. There is a story about religion called the Hunchback of Notre Dame. It takes place in the city of Paris in the olden days. This setting is pretty similar to Ptolis except without the fantasy. I absolutely love the Disney movie of Hunchback of Notre Dame. It is one of my favorite Disney movies. I tried to read the book. I couldn't get through due to the excessive descriptions of the Notre Dame cathedral and surrounding city. This wouldn't work in a novel. However all that rich detail would be helpful for an urban RPG setting. Maybe Ptolis can have a setting like that. Maybe players can homebrew Ptolis so it resembles real life Paris. That can be so cool. Even Ravnica has a religious guild called Orzhov. That is white and black. Orzhov is religious with parts of banking and mafia mixed in. This guild is pretty weird. That can be incorporated somehow. Heck Hunchback of Notre Dame does have racism as a secondary theme. So I guess I can mix my two campaign ideas together. Maybe there is a crooked religious group led by a light elf priest. Then this group is really racist against drow. So the drow can parallel Romani instead of blacks. Ether way, there can still be a theme of racism being wrong.
@@c.d.dailey8013I think you win the award for the longest RUclips comment I have ever seen. Let alone received! 🙂 That was some fantastic information. That was basically a whole blog post! A lot of people do view playing in one city as limiting but honestly, I have been running a game in this city since 2017 and we still have not managed to explore the entire thing. All of us have been playing DND for multiple decades so this was an experience none of us had ever had before and it has been really fun 😊
FLIPPING OUTSTANDING! So the question becomes - can you do this for other sources. I love Ptolus and use it to enhance all my other campaigns. Pretty soon the next Drakkenheim book will be out, and because of the popularity of the RUclips Series, this will... this will make you MATH! Is this Modular? Is this as simple as feeding the same program a couple different PDF books? Wait, if it just answers questions and generates requests, is it under Copywright? I would LOVE for this to be available for FateFOrge (in English). They have high quality work- but they don't have support that will make it expand (Like a Web Series or anything). I'm sure Tal'Dorei is already being worked on.

I loved your perspectives. As a writer I just want to add a few ideas. I love the villains that has a good reason to be in opposition. Maybe even in the right when they learn more. @@riley539 it seems like 90% of the videos about chatgpt and D&D revolve around the idea of solo play. I've never played tabletop DnD (I'm a closet nerd) but was interested after playing baldur's gate 3. And text adventures on PC were big when I was a kid so it's a little nostalgic
@@riley539 you've never played tabletop DND?! Oh man. My heart breaks a little for you. What about play by post? Have you heard of that? That's how I play
My villain name is Zain Morgan who’s basically a PMC for monsters. You want a beholder, displacer beast, or harpy? Call the number on your sending stone now! We have a two for one deal on spine devils and this offers won’t last! And if you get in the way of my business hahaha neither will you…
@@oreoninja45zen84 PMC meaning private military contractor or something else? Haha So he sells access to those monsters? Are those summons or actually imprisoned creatures on this plane?
@@D20Pub yep private military
@@oreoninja45zen84 so what is villainous about selling access to monsters?
@@D20Pub imagine what the average person could do if they had one. When you have a hammer all your problems look like nails. What’s to stop someone from buying a basilisk because some guy looked at him weird? Or assassinating the king with a beholder because you think you’d do a better job. If you have the gold then the world is your oyster. The monsters can’t say no when you buy them and always follow your commands.
@@oreoninja45zen84 very interesting character... Do you have more details or even some artwork? I would like to add this guy as an NPC to my site if you would be okay with it
Life loving lich! YT cut me off
Great video!
Thank you! Are you running a Ptolus campaign?
@@D20Pub No. I have the 5e version of the book and hope to run it someday, tho.
@@outercow1 excellent! Have you got an account on my Ptol.us website already?
I use chatGPT as a creative “wall” to bounce ideas off of to flesh out campaign ideas and adventures. I also use it to do the boring work I don’t wanna do “what’s in the box?” “3 death themed spells for my orc caster” I’ve used it for stat blocks and opening dialogue. I don’t understand the “robot bad” comments on here. It’s just a game you play with your friends. If your friends notice the content is AI generated then I think that’s a problem with the user, not the tool. You should be curating the information and making it your own.
@@brianistryin76 It's been great for idea bouncing for me too. I used to have to text like 3 people to ask questions. Now I just ask ChatGPT and it gives me some great feedback. I think the robot bad feelings are from creatives which feels ai is built on the back of "stolen" work. Which is a complicated argument. For me, I just needed something to help me with my game and it's doing that for sure!
@@D20Pub yeah you’re right, it’s complicated. With this topic (and with most other discussions) all nuance is out the window. Have you seen Campaigns Never Die? I could agree that’s too much AI.
@@brianistryin76 I have not. I'll check it out!
I think if you rely too much on AI it can come out weird, but it's not much different than using a table that you roll on to generate an encounter if you use it that way. And going the opposite way, the better your input, the better your output. If you just tell it "be my gm" you're going to get weird results compared to a good prompt with context for it to work with
@@1TrashCrap all true for sure!
I'm with you! I use ChatGPT4o for every session. I use it to give immersive descriptions and to give images. One tip, Limit the number of words in the response. 'in less than 150 words describe the cave entrance'. I find that 150 words is about a minute of speaking, and players start to loose interest if the description is more than a minute long.
'Heres how i use a machine trained on stolen work because im too lazy too think up stuff myself, so theft is the answer!
Despite the naysayers, I find it useful, even as a simple brainstorming partner to bounce ideas from. I throw my ideas at ChatGPT and together we try to come up with the best ways to implement them.
Yeahhh no thank you, I prefer keeping the soulless slop away from a game built on soul and creativity
@@randomjester9983 I hear you. With the way my life and schedule is currently, ChatGPT makes my game better and faster and remembers way more than me 😉
Soulless AI literally figured out your entire DNA structure so we can combat cancer lmao
@@doublestarships646 That’s amazing, that’s perfect. Don’t mistake me, I don’t have issues with AI as a whole. It can be used to relive humanity of its hardest labours and solve our most difficult problems, it should allow us to less time with our work and more time with our hobbies and passions. What I don’t like, however, is when it blends into those hobbies and passions.
AI? That's gonna be a big "Nah" from me.
@@DanielJPool Everyone is entitled to their own. Do you mind sharing why? Hate the idea of AI generated content? Worried about skynet? 😁
@@D20Pub I've tried randomly generated dungeons and they just felt lifeless and dull. It was fun for a one off but not sustainable or interesting long term. Also, if I'm not willing to put in the time to be creative why should my players be willing to put in the time to engage with the game? Generative large language models just don't offer the craft or polish of creating something my self. Not to mention, I'd rather "AI" do the dishes than my hobbies. If I'm not the one playing the game, what's the point of the game?
@@DanielJPool I wish AI could do the dishes for sure! I kind of feel bad using it for my play-by-post game, but the fact of the matter is it is generating incredible content and helping me and my players enjoy the hobby because otherwise I wouldn't be able to keep up. That said, everyone has their own taste and that's the joy of the world right? 🙂
Hah ai is smarter than me
@@bravojr I wouldn't say smarter. Can process more information faster, yes.
