Sheffield Delivers
Великобритания
Добавлен 21 дек 2023
Got to 51 and found myself with no financial security, overweight and a mild midlife crisis. How to solve it? Get a second job whizzing about on a moped delivering food in Sheffield (UK) for Uber Eats and Deliveroo, earning minimum wage and talking about whatever pops into my head. Yep, that should dig me out of the hole....
A series of unremarkable food delivery interactions in a Northern UK city
A middle-aged man drives erratically around a Northern UK city ensuring its residents receive the food that they have wisely (or unwisely in the case of McDonalds) ordered via apps available on both Android and iOS. He speculates on a variety of things, most of them centred around the challenges of staying warm, finding appropriate housing and reflecting wistfully on how he ended up working as a food delivery driver at 52.

The Loneliness of the Short to Middle Distance Food Delivery Driver
Просмотров 2342 месяца назад
It's grim up north, even more so if you are delivering food for hungover men in their underpants playing video games. And you can watch me do that. But you can also listen to me hold forth on a range of subjects I'm ill equipped to talk about in any depth, such as the treatment of immigrants post far-right riots. I also talk about broth far more than is either helpful or natural and make jokes ...

Becoming an Uber Eats rider at 51...
1:27:15 does the sandwich board saying “you’re not sad” give you hope in this pick up
1:25:20 when has Kumon gone global yeah there used to be a Kumon school at the other end of one of the main roads here in Forrest Hill Auckland but it’s changed to something else now
1:23:22 😮 when has the Uber map started showing traffic lights Google Maps doesn’t show traffic lights
1:13:07 maybe sometimes the apps think you’re the only rider out when there’s other rider waiting for an order or potentially stolen food and the previous rider hasn’t clicked that they’ve collected the order but those riders who steal food don’t know that the order get put back out and that’s why you receive them
55:56 😮 that restaurant has the Uber eats best restaurant award I guess you and your customer caught them in their slow hour
Also educating customers on how the pin on the map actually works
17:48 thats top notch multi tasking the guy was on the phone while helping you confirm your order number
I became a decorator 15 years ago after burning out from a career in tech (I worked for IBM). I find my job quite satisfying and not too much hard work. Im 48 so not far off your age. My earnings fluctuate but on average I bring in 45k - 50k self employed, working in a fairly affluent area in the midlands. Decorating was the easiest trade for me to get into which is why I went into it. Really due to the cost of getting certificates for other trades like elec or plumbing. Just a thought.
Were you good at decorating before or did you train/learn to do before switching job?
There’s a delivery service for food you deliver to private old peoples location that’s a very high wage
Do you know the name?
@@Sheffielddelivers I’ll let you now when I come across it again
It's some achievement to be caught speeding on a bike restricted to 45 mph.
Isn't it? It's so frustrating and I wonder how many other drivers get caught by those cameras as it's a place where it's very easy to go above 30.
@@Sheffielddelivers it's probably a good earner then as most places can only afford to erect a speed camera sign. My only speeding fine was from a mobile patrol in a half mile stretch of the A165, Carnaby, E. Yorks...
You could do Gophur courier deliveries until you can figure out which career path you want to pursue
I've seen people do that on RUclips, can you make decent money?
Gopur is a pretty good option, so it might be worth looking into. i know a small youtuber on here who started as food delivery but switched over to gopur because he was getting paid more, but he was based in London but does pay a bit more than the food apps the screw fix jobs some pay like £7 and do multiple jobs on the app and orders like a pick up and drop so you could have to pickup than a drop off 100% recommended London eats videos on it he explained it better than I can because I am just a gig watcher not worker
Great to hear that specialist insurance is needed. Would be interesting to know how many other delivery drivers have it...
You do have to upload your insurance certificate to their apps to prove you have it, though I suspect there may be workarounds to that
rich can be can'ts
Do you ever deliver in the wincobank area just wondering if you have deliver to us
Very rarely deliver to wincobank so maybe not 🤔
Great video. I also really liked you scooter. What is the make and model of it?
It's a Niu GTS sport
Maybe in Sheffield it's nice.... London is worst job you can do.
Mate do you realise there is no expenses to work. In a job like this your self employed. Youll be surprised what you can actually claim back on taxes. You can claim back insurance, fuel costs, maintence / repairs. Almost anything. Its a buisness expense claim it all back. (Yes it isnt refunded to you. But it certinaly makes a lot of my income untaxable) Im not sure if its different for someone who uses there car or bike for personal use also. But if you use it for only a buisness period you can even go as far and claiming back the deprecuation of your vehicle. Please look into it and make sure your claiming as much as you possibly can. Keep your hard earned money in your pocket.
Hi, I watched all your vids, have you just started filtering, not noticed before, you look confident as if doing it for a while. Love vids wish there were more. All the best steve
Only just started, a lifelong car driver it's taken a while to build up the nerve to filter 😃
Nice video I think a voice control on the apps would make things easier for us delivery drivers on 2 wheels If Amazon can do it on a fire stick Why not Uber Deliveroo just eat on a smart phone
Yeah I agree, most moped riders use Bluetooth headsets so it would be much easier to control
Great video. I do this full time but it definitely isn't suitable for most people as the platforms hold all the cards. You can get your account suspended by AI and for example a certain platform can terminate your account and/or withhold payment of your fees at their whim. This comment alone could get me banned...
Yeah, I wondered if being critical of these companies during my videos - which I have been a few times - would bring the ban hammer down on me 😆
Was that Middlewood you went past? While I like watching these videos, it's not a job that I would want to do... 🙂
Yes it was, do a lot of deliveries round that area!
@@Sheffielddelivers thought it was, ta. That's good to know, for future reference (could be moving there). 🙂
This was an eye-opener for me. Thank you for sharing
Great first video! Would you mind sharing the model moped you are using , electric..?
Electric moped, Niu GTS Sport
impressive video for 400 subs !! i really like the the conversational style, and the editing + overlays are looking great, well done
Thanks, really appreciate that!
What moped is this? I have always wanted to ride/deliver on a scooter and this would be a good excuse!
It's an electric scooter, the Niu GTS Sport. Paid about £2000 for it. Great little machine
I'm looking to do this to supplement my income but have only managed to get signed up to deliveroo atm. Really struggling to get Uber/Just Eat signed up and I don't think it's worth it with just deliveroo, unfortunately!!
Deliveroo is generally better paying than Uber Eats. I've never managed to get registered for Just Eat despite trying multiple times. Where do you deliver?
@@Sheffielddelivers I'm down south, delivering in and around Brighton area. I did my first shift of a couple hours on Friday evening and noticed that the pay was quite good from deliveroo, compared to miles/time taken to complete!! Just hoping I can get one of the other 2 alongside it, to keep the jobs consistently coming in when I am online🤞
İf u let us to see road during the riding, its more better for us, thanks mate
Keep grinding my friend
Thanks 🙏
I like watching the traffic, houses, different streets etc. Can you make your camera higher so we can see more of the road ahead?
Yeah i would like to but would need to mount it on the helmet but don't have the equipment at the moment. Hope to sort something out soon
Loved the video man but just a personal preference thing the cutting between clips is kind of headache inducing at least for me maybe remove some of them or tone it down?, just a suggestion. Not hate. Loved the video keep it up!
Yeah, I was trying something new this video, I felt some of my others were a bit slow so sped up the editing a bit. Think I may have overdone it a bit 😉
These types of videos are easy to watch, so you don't have to use up too much brain power to think about what you are watching... especially in the evening, when you are winding down for the night.
It's a bit concerning when you know the driver in front of you has no idea you're there. Make sure they don't reverse all of a sudden.
Yeah, have to be particularly careful when it gets dark
Great video as usual. Love your calm relaxing voice. Like listening to an audiobook
Thank you!
Personally im struggling to cope with the dire fares UE are offering.
Yeah, I've virtually given up on UE and mainly just use Deliveroo
Why not take both?
why would you get insurance? its such a huge cut
How is it possible to be on Road then ?
Hello mate, I have started delivering as well but on UE as im waiting for deliveroo to approve me. I wanted to ask though is it normal to get such bad paid jobs, most of mine flash up at like £3/4 each, nowhere near the £11/12 that i see other couriers getting?
Most important metric is distance not how much the order is. Ideally aim for £2 for a mile, so if you get an order for £3 that's fine as long as the distance is 1 mile or 1.5 miles. You do get bigger orders like £11 or £12 but you will often be travelling 7-8 miles so that's actually worse than the smaller orders.
@@Sheffielddelivers Wow whats that on? Uber eats here take the mick, the worst one today was 4.50 for 5 mile which as you can imagine I declined!
@@LivingLifeLuke deliveroo definitely gives you better order ratios than Uber Eats
@@Sheffielddelivers Yeah im constantly chasing my deliveroo account. I also managed to get JE however not in my area, some people say you can change it back to your area after a few shifts but im not sure
It's a big problem here in Manchester There are lots of illegal immigrants living in hotels in Manchester and working on rented accounts. Free accommodation Free electric and gas No council tax bill No water bill Free mobile phone Government gives them spending money too Oh and free food breakfast lunch and dinner Free broadband So it's a massive issue for me As it costs me £1000 per Month on rent and household bills Before I've even bought food
Great video
I am local to the last area, you are ok with hanging around that area as it does have plenty of restaurants, but really only after 5:30pm
Hi mate, nice video. What kind of ebike are you using?
I have a Niu GTS Sport
It's about supply and demand. When you have fitted into a niche you fit and suddenly the small pool of workers becomes a Lake then yes he can say that.
I do this as a second job in Australia. It gives me a reason to go outside meet new people which I like, but I would never do it as a full timer. That would work out to be too many long hour days and stress! We don't have a tipping culture here either, but one out of every 10-15 deliveries will tip a few dollars here or there which is awesome.
Sounds similar to my situation, interesting to hear that tipping in Australia is similar to here
More corporate based or medical based jobs are more likely to hire a non white person because they want to be "diverse" and not based on merit. It's very common in university admissions. Pathetic tbh. I'm saying this as a black person living and working in London.
Endless fetch quests. I've not got uber radar here but have seen it once while I was working in Scarborough for a bit. I thought it was supposed to offer more than one order though.
Even on days when ive made 6 quid an hour, ive still enjoyed it. I do it for a few "beer tokens" a week and just enjoy riding around my seaside town (torquay) seeing places and people.
Yeah, that's how I feel, but know I'm fortunate that I don't have to do it as a full time job
Nice job here dealing with the people and what a beast that Scooter is at times looks like the front wheel is jumping up and leaving the road surface - Pure delivery power spec for sure 🙃
I really like your attitude, the way you communicate and your choice of words. Thank you for the video. You would definitely make another type of video material and would grab the interest. You have a very good culture.
Thank you for your kind words
Great video and insight, subbed for future content. Good luck and be safe . 👍
Thanks, much appreciated
I can say that I was the 308 th subscriber and brag about it when you hit the 10k subs soon inchallah haha
You certainly can - it might be in 5 years time but still 😉
