Fahrenheit 451 suite by Bernard Herrmann
I’ve been tempted by the System 55 for a while. How are you liking it? Is there anything you find yourself not really utilizing? Sounds great by the way.
I love the system 55. It’s great value for money too, now £1239 in the UK (I paid £1500). It does have some quirks though. The whole V trig/S trig thing is a bit of a pain but I have mitigated this mostly by making some short V trig to S trig converter cables and as a consequence I don’t tend to use the 961 interface very much but I use everything else. The output level of the 921B oscillators is a bit lower than one would expect from modern eurorack modules but I have installed some amplifiers to deal with this if it becomes a problem. I have modified my system quite a lot with LEDs on the envelope generators and 921 oscillators, some internal wiring and have added more oscillators, filters and VCAs. Overall I think it great value for money too considering you get two large cases and power supplies with plenty of connectors too. Hope this is of some help.
I think these guys think they're getting paid 'by the note'......(LOL) no complaints.........awesome.......It's been so long since I've visited N.O. Way too long...........thanks for this glimpse.......................
😂 they certainly crammed them in. I can recommend Bachanal wine shop/restaurant when you get back there 👍
I'll put it on my list.............the first time I was there was in 1982, playing drums in a couple of music videos for a record company. I didn't even really know anything about it - blew my mind. Been back quite a few times since......always awesome.......
My first time, absolutely loved it 👍
Always a unique and memorable city to visit.............
Hello Rob, I have a question. I just acquired a 914 from behringer and I have the problem, that the volume drops really low when using it. Is the problem, that I am using a mono eurorack jack to patch into the input of the module? Are you using a stereo pair of 914‘s btw? Sounds really good. I just find myself in the position, where I am thinking I have got a faulty module. Thank you mich in advance!
Hi Lucas. No your module is not faulty. This is how the filter bank is and is as per the original Moog version. Lots of people report this as an issue. If using with other sound sources I usually feed the output to a mixer and have its channel set higher than the others. Alternatively I use a simple amplifier. I have this one. www.yorkmodular.co.uk/products/vbst-variable-gain-signal-booster-amplifier-2hp
Very nice!! What are those cables hanging out of your envelopes? are they s trigg converters?
Yes exactly.
Sweet jam and impressive set up!
Thanks for listening
Fantastic
Thanks for listening 👍
such a great act..............cool that you got to attend.........................
One of my favourite bands. This was a slimmed down version of the band but still a great gig. It’s just a shame I can’t capture a decent sound on my camera. Work to be done there.
yeah, too bad the soundman wouldn't give you access to the recording, as many acts record most of the concerts these days, and it's often not to difficult to talk to the FOH soundman
Real great job! Very inspiring. I always loose my self searching for layers, basses, pads, and you remind me that some beautiful voices with arpeggios are enough to bring emotions. Congratulations for the visuals by the way!
Thanks for listening
cool tones, are they sequenced or performed? :)
Thanks Tim. It’s a bit of both really. It was recorded into an Arturia Keystep and played back from there.
@@ProfessorSynth Cheers for info :)

Was at this gig what a joy to see it again ,thank you!

Nicely done Rob 👌
Cheers. You have been quiet?
Yeah, lots happening at the mo but when everything settles I'll be sitting down with gear again.
You wrote: "modulated by LFO" Q: which LFO brand and model?
LFO is Behringer 921 VCO in low frequency mode
You wrote: "into stereo flanger into ping pong delay." Q: which brand(ss) and models were used?
Stereo flanger is Lexicon MX200, ping pong delay is built into Zoom Livetrack L-12 mixer

very nice harmonies and tone!
cool, great rich tones :)
Thanks Tim 👍
Great tip. Thanks so much for the upload. Have been using the attenuators - and + 6 v outs all along. Cheers
Now add an attenuator and you have a 'FINE' control..............
Hi, I started using modular last Christmas (B' System 15), this is a great tone, (I am still a bit in the dark on terminology and stuff, so don't fully understand ) :)
👍
Very clever!
😀
It is good to know that this can swing +/- 12 volts with a +/- 6 volt input. I think the original moog had a -6 volt rail limiting the bottom end of the range.
Yes the Moog did have a -6V rail. Strangely enough, there is a video by Behringer where they say that their System 55 has a -6V rail but I have measured the power supplies and they are definitely -12V.
@@ProfessorSynth I just finished watching that video- it says that the + and - 6 volt conversion happens in the module. So it pulls the 12v as normal, but it's divided down.
Yes I checked again and you are correct 👍
Hi,Thanks for this video. I have 2 of these on order right now. Can you tell me if the inputs act as a precision adder? I am assuming that they do but I am not sure. I want to use the second input for transposing sequences.
Yes. Best to use the CP3A oscillator controller for this too I think. This guy has some good videos showing how to do this ruclips.net/video/j2s7FR51W6I/видео.htmlsi=sJMirA2xzFfvYuAT
Nice work! As someone with no soldering or DIY electronics experience, that has considered lately the idea of beginning to try building eurorack from DIY kits, would you say this is a suitable project for a me?
Yes this is quite a simple DIY project. A bit fiddly but not too much to go wrong. There is a channel called Molten Modular that has some long form DIY builds that may be useful 👍
Fixed Filter Bank Forever! FFBF......I like your toilet sounds! Cheers
Thank you. You may need to see a doctor
@@ProfessorSynth Doctors are far too overrated for my liking. I might see a witch doctor though if you can refer me to one that knows what a FFBF is!, Cheers
@@ProfessorSynth Actually Rob I was making a very obtuse reference to the bathroom scene at the end of 2001 A Space Odtssey. The sound effects remind me a lot of the texture from that movie. I have a FFB too and have used it as a series of resonant filters with feedback feeding white noise. Instant space choir Cheers
@@moogfooger 👍
@@ProfessorSynth where's that witch doctor Professor?
I noticed you added extra modules to fill the empty rack space in the system 55. I cant seem to get a straight answer when looking for an answer to the question - how much power is left over on the built in power supply for adding extra modules? Thank you if you can provide the answer!
I would say plenty. Both the upper and lower sections of the System 55 are fitted with 3 Amp power supplies. Each have 3 zones of connectors and the recommendation is to not exceed 1 Amp for each zone. The lower section where additional modules can be fitted, has 12 modules already fitted of which 8 are passive i.e require little or no power so there are plenty of connectors (more than 20 from memory) and plenty of power for connecting additional modules.
@@ProfessorSynth thanks very much!
Is it just me or do the 911 envelope generators behave differently to modern eurorack adsr envelope generators ? For instance it seems that the once the cv voltage for the maximum sustain is reached, it won’t register any following triggers until I manually turn down the sustain below a certain threshold. I may have that wrong, or I may be confused and instead it’s the attack stage that behaves differently. Thanks for your videos and your help :)
It wouldn’t surprise me if the 911 envelope generators behave differently to modern eurorack envelopes but I don’t have any so can’t compare. Behringer seems to have copied the original Moog design quite faithfully in most instances. The obvious difference is course is that the 911 is ADRS from the top down. You mention “CV voltage for the maximum sustain”. If the trigger input is maintained, the envelope will go through its attack and decay phases then drop to the sustain level and hold there for as long as the trigger input is present. Once the input is removed the envelope will enter the release phase. I have put up a short video of the oscilloscope traces I see with a little of each ADRS dialled in. ruclips.net/video/Dh6phV8xORk/видео.htmlsi=OD6aYfki9YYFqUHc I hope this helps.
@@ProfessorSynth Thank you. Since posting this comment i asked chat GPT, and as long as it is true, the answer was that the 911 does not respond to any new s-triggers before the envelope has completed its whole cycle. So that might explain that if i set a high sustain and a very long release, why it doesn't seem to come back to the low voltage attack stage unless I manually "reset" the envelope by turning the sustain and/or release (and in some cases the attack or decay if they were long enough too). and this is when it ignores new s-trigs. i will check out youroscilloscop traces, that will likely help a lot thank you.
Lovely to see someone putting a System 55 into action! Whether it's Moog or Behringer or AJH or another work-alike/clone, it's great to listen to the systems.
Love this vibe.

watched this last night at saffron walden - soooo good, would love to see again - should be officially released too
Yes was fabulous. I would have recorded more but the staff at the Barbican shut me down.
@@ProfessorSynth I see that there are more than just you recording the performance. Have you thought about using the in-ear microphones like SonicPresence or Microphone Madness? Paired up with an unobtrusive GoPro mini in the fold of a hoodie, you should be OK.
cool beat!
cool result, cool rhythms. What is the thin strip top right and below it on the 55?
Thanks Tim. The thin strip top right is a V-trig to S-trig converter module that I made. I don’t really use it much now as I have made some short patch cables with a plug on one end and a socket on the other end. These have the conversion circuit built into the jack socket and saves having to patch the Behringer V-trig to S-trig converter module. I just plug a V-trig into the converter cable and S-try comes out. This save quite a lot of patching. The module below it is the FX Aid XL, a multi purpose effects module. I’m using a delay on this particular patch.
@@ProfessorSynth thanks for the info, the fx unit is interesting.

Reminds me of Computer Experiments by Synergy. Very old recordings using a PAiA single board computer and a Prophet 5 synth.
Thanks for listening
Rob. This is a great mod. Moreover, it appears that you've unlocked the key to enabling the switched normal connection in the jacks that are used by Behringer. This allows any input jack to have a "normal" input, which can be overridden by inserting into the jack. The obvious application is with the standard wiring for Kybd CV and PWM from the 921A Osc Driver to the 921B VCOs. It is not at all clear which trace to cut. Let me ask first, is the trace between two round pads? (the rectangular pad is ground, right?) Second, are the two pads closest to the two edges of the PCB (at the corner)? The switched connection is the pad closest to the bottom (the end, not the side) of the circuit board, right? That's what the orange wire from the "master" is connected to. The orange wire connects to the the master at the output pad closest to the side of the pcb.
Hi O.Z. Yes I had thought about modifying the 921B VCOs and PWM connections, (I believe it was done this way on the original Moog modular systems) but I’m still thinking about that. I agree that it’s not clear on my video which trace to cut. Let me try to make another short video to clarify this. The other thing you may have noticed is that I have added LEDs to the 921 oscillators Auxiliary output . This is a little more complicated because you need to insert a transistor as a buffer to drive the LED to stop it dragging down the oscillators but it is definitely doable if you are reasonably familiar with simple electronics. I’ll let you know when I have made the clarification video. Regards Rob
@@ProfessorSynth Rob, The LEDs on the 921 and 911 are both on my todo list. Where did you get the aluminum that you drilled for the drill guide? does it have a right angle on the side? Did you drill through it on each panel or just use it to mark the location? Thanks for paving the way on this! BTW, Anthony Marinelli just published a video that mentions several of the "normalled" connections n the Moog IIIC. You may have seen that already: ruclips.net/video/lEktjvpNfac/видео.htmlsi=WJjU2tY6zIiocsKy
@@ozhalljr I have posted an unlisted video which should show the pads to be cut more clearly. I checked out the Anthony Marinelli video, very interesting. Check out the video here and let me know if you need any more information ruclips.net/video/gKLEZZLYS-U/видео.htmlsi=LMlFIdEVFa7Byl1S
@@ProfessorSynth Thanks Rob! This is the S-trig in socket, right? (your comment said "the bottom pad is the "Signal out"). So the pad at the bottom is the S-trig signal from the socket. The other black dot pad (rightmost in the picture) is the normal pin to which we would solder the Master's S-trig in line, right?
Hi O.Z. I have put another short video up which I hope will explain. Let me know if you need more clarification. ruclips.net/video/OIFh_N6T5MM/видео.htmlsi=Nv9q9rGBELHWLNfW
sounds incredible, wish I could afford a setup like this.
Thanks for listening
Great melody. Great "b-roll" in the video. Did you buy a stock System 55 then rearrange the modules & add extra 921s, filters, VCAs, envelope, etc?
Thanks. Yes exactly that. I have also added some other non System 55 modules and modified the envelope generators and 921 oscillators to have LEDs.
@@ProfessorSynth I missed noticing the LEDs. I've been using LED cables for feedback on a gate signal. LEDs on the modules would be better. I'd like to do that mod, can you point me to details on the mods?
I found that LED cables I have tried load the signal lines and affect the performance of modules, particularly the oscillators. I made a video on modifying the 911s about 7 months ago. You should be able to find it on my channel.
There is also a video (about 9 months ago) on how I modified the 911s such that there is a designated master 911 whose input is linked to the other 911 inputs via the masters input jack but disconnects from the others if a cable is inserted in its input. This allows all the 911s to be triggered with a single input or used independently as normal.
@@ProfessorSynth I'll check out those videos. Thanks!
This is fantastic! Thanks for posting this I had no idea this was a thing that Behringer made. Definitely going to look into this product more!

Hello Rob, your work is amazing ! Do you use the CMA module for synchronise somthing ?
Thank you, that’s very kind of you. I’m not sure what you mean by the CMA module. Can you explain further?
@@ProfessorSynth Ok sorry i'm explain, i want to use the cm1a module from behringer system 55 to synchronise for exemple the sequencer 960 to a drum machine like elektron. You use the cm1a module on your video on the bottom left on your rack
OK I see. The CM1A is a midi to CV and gate converter so if you take midi out from the drum machine, connect to the midi input of the CM1A and use the CM1A CV and gate outputs to control the System 55 it will be in sync. To synchronise the 960 sequencer, connect a gate output of the CM1A to the Shift input of the 960. I hope this helps.
@@ProfessorSynth I try but it this but it doesnt change. When you speack about the shift output, is it the shift output from the 962 sequential Switch?
Trig out of CMA1 to shift INPUT on the 960 sequencer. This will sync the 960 to midi
