    Why bother with all of that difficulty chiseling out those grooves? Why not just screw the rungs to the outside faces of the side-rails? Seems like high quality screws, going deep enough, maybe 8 per rung, are not ever going to give out from human body weight. No? I've heard mixing nails w/ the screws is a good idea since nails have stronger anti-shearing strength. Seems like a couple of nails and a couple of screws on each side of each rung would be solid enough.

    • @craftyshed
      @craftyshed 4 месяца назад

      Mixing screws with nails is a good idea. I think that the same thing can be done in different ways, so there is no right or wrong. About 25 years ago, I did my first ladder the way you described. Ladder did the job, but over a few weeks it became a bit wobbly/loose. Then one man showed me how to do it this way (with notches). Couple years ago, I visited that same place and believe or not that ladder is still alive (they use it occasionally for over 20 years). So, these notches are taking most of the pressure away from the screws/nails - preventing joint loosening and rung ends from shear. Rungs just sit in these notches like on shelves. Thank you for your comment and suggestions.

    I’m trying to make these out of pine and the tree is breaking in half when I try drilling the top hole. What am I doing wrong?

    • @craftyshed
      @craftyshed 8 месяцев назад

      Hi! Just a few things that can cause the top breaking off - 1. Work piece needs to be secured with a clamp against some flat scrap wood, so there is backing behind (exactly as I did in the video) and this triangle cannot move while you are drilling/cutting a hole. 2. Try to reduce the speed, especially towards the end, when it is almost through (my video is sped up 3x when I’m cutting that hole) 3. Not enough material to hold things together, try to reposition or reduce hole saw diameter if possible, just so there is more material left to hold everything together. Thank you for the question.

    • @poya1981
      @poya1981 8 месяцев назад

      Happend to me as well the first time. I think using clamp above top hole causing it to breaking. Try placing the clamp below the top hole.

    Great instructions. One question, how long in cm is the base of your triangles (option 1)?

    • @craftyshed
      @craftyshed 8 месяцев назад

      Hi! Base of Those triangles is approximately 7"(18cm), but this is correct for 9" (23cm) wide boards. Basically you don't need to measure anything, just set your saw at 30º angle, make the first cut, then flip the board over and cut again through the "top/peak" of the triangle. Please note that you need small Christmas baubles for this project. Thank you for your question.

      @@craftyshedhow Come you did not use the forstner bit directly on the wood when the wood was a whole triangle(one piece)? Is it not possible to first use the forestner and then use the hole saw?

    • @craftyshed
      @craftyshed 8 месяцев назад
