Our 7 month old cocker has completely gone off balls and dummies when out. In the house he is still good with a ball, garden he will run to the ball but not pick it up. But out it’s like the ball isn’t there at all. We’ve only had him about a month and he was ok at 1st

My Working Cocker is 18 months old and used to pull like a train on the lead. Had originally started training him with a harness and double ended lead, as recommended by a local trainer, but this method just wasn’t working. Switched to a gun dog trainer a few months back, and straight away, he said ditch the harness and use a slip lead. There has been progress, but my pup is a stubborn little so and so. I’m currently using a Heeling Lead, as well as a conventional slip lead, walking him on my left. From your video, does it make a difference which hand you hold the lead in, particularly in being effective with the corrections?

Better to train a recall without a sit. If you really want your dog to sit after a recall, you can always train that later. In the early stages, asking the dog to do anything before rewarding them will result in much slower progress, due to the effect on drive in the dog. Even competition recalls are not trained with a sit to begin with - it also slows the recall itself. In the early stages, trainers will often release the dog and throw the treat/toy behind them to prevent the dog learning to slow to a stop before reaching them.

I use maze feeders and puzzles with my English cocker puppy. I use their food during training sessions to condition the good behaviours. I am not always home to give them their meals so anytime anyone doesn’t feel like training the puppy they can use the puzzles. It gets puppy to use their brain and by using the tongue and mouth to work out the food it satiates their need to use their mouth on things. We have noticed our puppy will nap soon after the puzzles vs. hand feeding during training. I usually give my puppy a Kong with frozen food in the crate after training to settle.

If my dog has any fear response I ignore it. Don't fuss it, it just thinks its getting a reward for being afraid. It nurtures the fear. If the dog trembles, its to release its fear. Its one of the ways they deal with stress, its no big deal.

Crates are great for most dogs. But my cocker spaniel had a fear response immediately when left alone from day 1. Held the bathroom in a crate all night no issue. Sat in a bigger crate when I'm in the home office no issue. But leaving their sight was an issue. It's not treating them like a baby to have to deal with a fear response.

Maze feeders are often used to slow the rate of ingestion so as to prevent bloat, which can be caused by the unintentional gulps of air a dog can take whilst eating very rapidly. Not sure where people got the idea that it's simply a fad.

Here in Denver, Colorado there are crack heads & drug dealers everywhere (Capitol; Hill) . Two shootings this week on my block... My dog knows he has purpose...no snowflakes here. Cheers,
