Nice video. There is no doubt that there is a cost of living crisis in the UK. Unfortunately wages have not kept up with inflation for the last 10-15 years at least. It's a serious problem. Just a shame you started the video with a mini-rant about immigrants., The cost of living crisis is nothing to do with the high levels of immigration. Immigration is probably too high at the moment but most studies show that on average they are net contributors to tax since most are net contributors of tax. That is probably not true for the small proportion of illegal immigrants ('the boats') but the vast majority of immigrants are legally let into the country by the government and are coming here to work.

@HeyRixan it is an initial layout cost, herbs and spices, plastic containers that are freezer, microwave and dishwasher safe. They're probably £5 each. By the time you've got 20 of them, £200 probably before you've even made anything. It is something you have to keep at otherwise it's a total waste of money. I got myself a smart plug so I can turn it off or on from anywhere I am. Turn on at 10am off again at 18:00. Which is handy if you went to work at 8am. A timer plug would also work. It does require some meal planning but overtime you just know what to buy and make every week. I cook one week of the month, the other 3 I'm just ploughing through the frozen leftovers. Say 4 chicken breasts cost £7 a packet, I could buy two whole chickens for £8 get the four breasts plus four legs, four thighs, four wings. Or a beef joint, cut it half and have diced beef for a stew, cook the other half and have beef sandwiches for the week.

We are fortunate in that we have a 3 bed semi and we are mortgage free. We're not wealthy just quite frugal. Worked hard, saved our money. But l am noticing it more now, cost wise. Especially on utility bills. Probably one of 5 most expensive countries to live in. We have a house but when we had a flat, there was this ever increasing estate/management charge to pay. And council tax now, costs a lot more. Its almost the price of what it costs to rent a one bed flat, or and it seems it. Motoring very expensive. Thing is in the UK. Property prices/rents are beyond. And forget it if you have your name on the council waiting list. It's not going to happen. You will have to rent privately, and that's even more expensive due to the supply and demand. Mainly down to huge levels of immigration. I really feel for a young couple in their 20's. It's ok for me and the Mrs as we are in our late 50's and we don't have the property hassle one. Great video! I agree with you for sure. I have a family and we have a young daughter 3yrs old, I feel having a family changes the game even harder now, and it was hard enough already. I love my daughter and family, but it's put a financial strain on us that we never thought would be so damming. My wife became unwell after giving birth and struggles a lot with the day to day life, there is no help for her as her conditions do not warrant any help. I was working full time in an IT job, barley making rent each month. She was able to work part time, but after childcare fees and high rent costs we were almost in a £1k deficit each month, totally unsustainable. Out of desperation I took a gamble and stepped away from my IT work to start a business 2 years ago, which I have been fortunate has done well enough to sustain our family, making us digital nomads if we choose, freeing up the location of our lives totally. We left the UK for the past 3 months on a quest to try and solve our financial woes, traveling in our campervan around Spain and Portugal in search of another way of life. We found especially in Portugal beautiful affordable places, warm friendly people, and a very affordable way of life. Houses outside of the cities going for £40k, basically no council tax, energy bills 1/5th of the UK prices, wine and beers only 1EUR - 1.5EUR each in the bars. However the culture barrier and language barrier proved too much for us, as a family we were not ready to take the big step, pushing our daughter into a school in another language, and then being away from family who won't leave the UK added up to a leap too far for us in our case. We are back in the UK now and struggling to even find somewhere to rent. Everyone is unwell, winter colds all around us and our family are struggling to make ends meet. Feeling the financial struggle despite earning well in business, since such a huge percentage of business income is taxed away, leaving us with a medium income for the average family, and still not enough to be accepted for a mortgage on the averages houses around now. The best plan now is to try and find a house and start multiple jobs in order to make the ends meet on top of running the business. Perhaps starting a veg garden of our own to help with food costs. Considering multiple side hustles in order to get the outgoings covered. This isn't the lives our parents and grandparents had, they could sustain the family with just 1 income like the Simpsons show modeled as normal back in the day, how far society has fallen since then, it's a sad state of a situation seemingly effecting most of the developed world at the moment. Out of interest I looked at the old house I grew up in, my parents in 1995 bought the house for £105,000. 30 years later, the same house is on the market for £1.2M that's over a 10x increase for the same house, a total impossibility for us these days

If you are on a bad salary in any country it's always going to be difficult. Australia has gotten a lot worse in the last 10 years. Since the 1980s the population has literally doubled - and cost of living/quality of life is also in significant decline.

I am from the UK, and have been living abroad for 5 years now. I am in my early 30s. What you are saying is correct, however I do not think the UK is as doomed as all these videos on youtube state. I am typing this while visiting my parents over the xmas/NYE period in the UK. I think people need to realize (1) life in general is becoming more difficult overall in almost most countries. living expensives are increasing so much, quality of services are decreasing and the government is still at times incompetent, and (2) the real reason people are complaining is not that the UK is finished per say, but rather people can save less money for personal expenses. I cannot comment on your work per say, but provided someones salary is not enough, there are potential remidies which may be called more necessary now. Living with parents can save rent, working from home or remote work, cutting down on costs, £630 on food for a single person per month? bit too much. I remember I paid £400 and that was generous, a key is to cook more. From Sainsburys I can get frozen vegetables, two steaks for around £7-8 which covers two dinners. A key important for this generation more so, and also for future generations is the importance of saving. Saving now, and benefitting later such as money that can be used on a house, pension, or investments/stocks/family. Despite me saying this, I am fully aware the UK is expensive, but small changes can have big effects. The UK is still a fantastic place to be, some of the nicest people, no extreme weather conditions, great educational schools and universities, still a functioning NHS, selection of international food, its english speaking, and best of all great alcohol selection :) Note I am a little biased as I am from the sticks, so cost of living is much cheaper here. Hope it all works out for you Rixan! On a side note, moving abroad has a lure which can blind reality. Meeting new people, settling into a new country, going to a country which has worse services and more corruption is not great. Yes you may be able to buy a cheap nasi lemak and pad thai in SEA (while having access to beaches), but when push comes to shove and you need to see a doctor, or get a legal document sorted, or require assistance from the police (in a foreign country) you will realize the level of corruption and bureaucracy is much worse ompared to the UK. Have a great day! :) Happy NY!

@@Dublinby thanks for your thoughts on the matter! I think yes 630 on food is a little on the high side but I very rarely drink so probably evens things out with the average person when combined. I agree there is a lot of negativity and unbalanced takes on life in the UK from people that don't know better ie what a real struggle looks like in other countries. It's probably easier to have a more realistic take when not always in the UK. Cheers

I’m an Australian. Lived there in 2034-2024. End of 2023 there was a recession, the job market was poor with low wages (especially outside London), high rents for poorly maintained property and the weather was extremely bad. Most people I spoke to weren’t optimistic about economic growth even with a new government coming. Some of the customer service was the worst I had anywhere. Given the economic circumstances I don’t blame people for not having the best work ethic. Public services were run down and public transport was ridiculously expensive especially outside London. It felt like the government was too London-centric to care about anything outside of London. I came back to Australia and noticed an improvement in people’s morale straight away. Things aren’t perfect here but it’s a better economy and lighter mood. Especially in our much longer summer.

I had a similar situation in reverse. I moved to Oz in 2012 on a Working Holiday Visa and had planned to live the dream in Sydney, surfing after work etc and when I arrived there was no work in the city due to the recession so I took a FIFO job in the oil fields.i didn't last much past 6 months, I may well still be in Oz now had economical circumstances been different. Agree with you about the long summers, makes a huge difference. 😎
