Here is a video compilation of a few of the baby wild birds rescued during the first month of spring, which have been brought to BirdCare Aotearoa for care.
The birds featured in this video are a kakīānau/black swan cygnet, rakiraki/mallard ducklings, manu pango/blackbird fledglings, pūkeko chicks, spur-winged plover chicks, and pūtangitangi/paradise shelducks ducklings. They will all be released back into the wild when they have grown up!

This beautiful diving petrel was found grounded near the airport. He had mild conjunctivitis and was underweight. He responded very well to treatment, and soon gained enough weight to be released! Pied stilt release

Following on from our last post, the pied stilts were released at the ‘Stilt Pond’ at Miranda Shorebird Centre. They took their sweet time preening in the sunshine and taking in their surroundings. After a slightly anxious departure, they both happily joined the stilts on the other side of the pond. We watched them poking around in the water and finding food almost immediately!

These two poaka (pied stilt) chicks were hatched from eggs by Hamilton Zoo before being transferred to BirdCare Aotearoa for care. Watch them grow up! (Featuring a guest appearance from a young masked lapwing.) One chick was treated for an improperly absorbed umbilicus, which developed a small infection. She recovered well and soon caught up in size to her sibling.
