  • This is an abridged version of a longer video of the release of three moho pererū (banded rails) at Matuku Link, following months of rehabilitation at BirdCare Aotearoa.
Two of the rails were admitted to BirdCare Aotearoa on 21 January 2022. They arrived with egg tooth and weighed only around 10 grams - they were likely within 24 hours of hatch. The third rail was admitted to BirdCare Aotearoa on 31 January 2022, and was slightly bigger on arrival (perhaps a couple of days old) and in better condition. After months of dedicated care at BirdCare Aotearoa, the rails grew into strong, healthy juveniles. On 23 May 2022, the three rails were released at Matuku Link, a predator controlled site near the Te Henga Wetland, Auckland’s largest wetland.
BirdCare Aotearoa considers it a huge privilege to have had the opportunity to raise these three precious birds, and we are incredibly proud of our rehabilitation team that went above and beyond to ensure these birds not only survived, but thrived. The trustees of Matuku Link are honoured to be able to give these birds a new home, hopefully for years to come, and provide a safe haven for them.
Special thanks to Roger Mills of Hummingbird Video and Photography for shooting and creating this video.
