    Ratcliffe power station is the only coal-fired plant in the UK to be fitted with a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) emission control facility, capable of reducing NOx (nitrogen oxides) emissions by 70-95%. It is also equipped with a Flue-Gas Desulphurisation (FGD) plant to remove sulphur dioxide (SO2) from the exhaust flue gases before they enter the atmosphere. With both SCR and FGD technology installed, Ratcliffe could meet the environmental standards in the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED).

    We have gas and nuclear plants. Nuclear is not perfect but it's a million times better than burning fossil fuels. Closing coal plants doesn't make us entirely dependant on renewables. There will be no blackouts. The conservatives have been phasing out coal for a decade. In 2020 we stopped burning coal for months and each year we have been using coal less and less because WE DONT NEED IT. Our energy prices are high because of greed, this is the real crime, letting private energy companies get away with it. It has little to do with where the energy is coming from.

    You realise that the coal mines that originally supplied the coal to this plant closed almost a decade ago, right? All the coal that this plant burned since had to be imported to the UK. We still have Natural Gas & Nuclear Power Stations which are more than suitable at producing cheap, baseline power. This plant had reached its End of Life, so it was going to be decommissioned anyway. This video is nothing but baseless anger baiting and conspiracy posting, preying on those who do not check the facts and see that this video has no substance.

    • @iareid8255
      @iareid8255 День назад

      KDRCG, that is true but much is due to government policy, which is so often not in the population's best interest. Modern coal generation is now more efficient and cleaner and it would be very useful to have an alternative to gas, which now is our only source of grid and supply balancing, and is again largely imported, and again, due to governement policy to make life harder for the North sea oil and gas sector, plus banning fracking for shale gas.. Nuclear is declining at the moment and does not contribute to balancing. Gas is our only generation type that does (All our eggs in one basket)and the technically illiterate government and civil service are trying to curtail that. It can only end in failure.

    • @KDRCG
      @KDRCG День назад

      @@iareid8255 whilst you have some good points, I want to point out that coal has had a minimal participation in our power grid for some time now. This power station was not some bastion of the uk power grid. It was also an old power station so it was not benefiting from the modern developments of coal combustion, also efficient coal combustion doesn’t matter if we have to import all the coal at great expense. The uk coal reserves are depleted and very few of them can be economically extracted and most of what can be extracted is too high grade to be burned in a power plant. Also nuclear is in the process of regrowing, it takes a lot of time to do so, but it is well into the process of doing so. Ultimately fossil fuels in general is a bunch of eggs we have put in one basket for too long now, looking to alternative power sources will always be better long term than continuing down the fossil fuel cul-de-sac.

    • @iareid8255
      @iareid8255 День назад

      @@KDRCG I was not suggesting that station be refitted (And one station is neither here or there), but the situation with gas being now so critical and that also is imported, albeit some from Norway so not as far as many other sources. A second source of fuel is benefitial from a security of supply situation but I know it is very unlikely that it will happen. Nuclear takes far longer to bring on stream than it should. South Korea built several stations in short order.The planning system is dreadful (and not just for nuclear stations) . However with wind obssessed Mr Milliband in charge he is less inclined to push nuclear (Wylfa Head I believe is in doubt now?) and we seem to be dilly dallying with SMRs. The U.K. had plan for nuclear twenty plus years ago, had that been implemented instead of wind we would be in far better situation. The Cul de Sac is renewables, they cannot support us long term, (Not even short term in my view). Yes fossil fuels have a limited future albeit quite a long one at the moment. That is another reason that coal is an asset, it would save some gas at least. I can't comment on our coal resources as that's not my field.

    • @KDRCG
      @KDRCG День назад

      @@iareid8255 I don't see how you can call renewables a Cul de Sac, since the technology has been continuously improving in generation efficiency and durability. It is also worth noting that rain, the wind, the sun & the tides are not going to be significantly affected for at least a few billion years, whilst economically extractable fossil fuels are going to last at most another century if not considerably less. The only reason that fossil fuels may last that long is that renewables and other energy sources have taken up a significant amount of the capacity that would have otherwise gone to burning through fossil fuels even faster. It is also worth noting that here in the UK we have significantly developed pump storage hydroelectric power stations, which are able to respond to fluctuations in the grid in seconds and provide a similar rotational buffer that a conventional steam plant would provide. Wind power alone, at the moment is 21GW average which, accounts for around half of the UK power supply. With new turbines generating more power, less noise and being more durable, we could easily increase this power capacity to cover a higher percentage without issue. Since the UK government previously has only half-heartedly invested in renewables before, I can entirely see a way that renewables could more than cover our power needs at not a significant cost (compared to building new fossil fuel power stations). It is also worth noting that renewables are a distributed power supply, meaning that they are harder to target by hostile actors (see Russia targeting Ukraine’s power stations). I entirely believe that renewables have proven themselves more than capable of supporting us long term and short term.

    We should have at least one coal fired power station. If the lights go off our modern way of life comes to an end. What the governent should be doing is to try to keep coal going whilst trying to develop thorium molten salt nuclear reactors, which in theory are a lot safer than conventional nuclear power. If we manage to make cheap modular nuclear reactors we would have an abundance of nearly free electricity. The very cheap electricity could then be used to extract co2 from the air ( or use the co2 from the coal powerstation ) and split hydrogen from water. Once you have co2 and h2 these can be combined to make methanol. Methanol can be burnt as a fuel in modified car engines, as is done in Brazil. And there you have it a potential net zero solution that would allow our way of life to continue without destroying the planet, a future where pensioners don't need to die because they can't afford to heat there homes.
