My 4x8 N Scale Train Layout - May 20, 2024
Просмотров 6628 месяцев назад
Hey Everybody! It’s been a minute since I posted, just thought I’d capture a quick video of the trains in action so you’d see the layout is still running!! There’s little I need to do on this track nowadays, just keep it clean with 91% alcohol and a little camera dust blower (the kind that has a squeeze bulb for little puffs of air to keep dust from accumulating in the water features.) it’s a v...

I know this might be upsetting to some of you, but hear me out!! I've had TWO N scale train layouts for a few years now my 4x8 Scenic layout and my 3x8 "Performance" train layout. I've built them both and I've loved using them both. BUT... my interests have changed and it was time to convert my 3x8 Performance layout into something I have a need for nowadays a workshop to set up and build guita...

Hey Everybody! It’s been a while since I’ve given an update featuring my 3x8, N Scale “Performance Track” Train Layout. Come check out how the layout looks nowadays and see it in action! I can easily run up to 4 long trains simultaneously on the 4 concentric loops, and it’s fun (and challenging!) to run trains using the 6 crossovers to move from one loop to another. I’m especially proud of how ...

      @JamesTuverson I have gotten into your performance track part of your series and is pretty wild. In a good way that is. Wiring is the part that scares me the most. How you keep it all separated is pretty amazing. Kato does have some of the smoothest running locomotives out there, imo.

    • @JamesGuitarRecording
      @JamesGuitarRecording 14 дней назад

      @@josephhill2232 thanks for your compliment! Yes, I was also really concerned about wiring, and that’s why I stuck with Kato wiring accessories and didn’t try to make my own. Of course it was more expensive, but the confidence that came from knowing the connections were solid was worth the added cost to me.

      @JamesTuverson 4 месяца назад

      Hello there, John! Thank you so much for watching and for the compliments! Part of the whole idea of the performance layout is that nothing about it was permanent. So the entire layout- track, electronics, lighting- was carefully dissembled and stored in a single box. And while I don’t have plans to rebuild it at the moment, the baseboard is ready to resume its role when I am (but right now it’s busy as my guitar building workshop!)

    Hey James layout looking amazing as always... I wanted to let you know if case you haven't already heard of this company called Model Train Technology that makes light kits for Kato passenger cars that don't flicker like the Kato light kits. They are not cheap but the result looks really good. I just had them installed in my Kato Hiawatha cars and it's really nice to have the lights work properly. Their product is a light board that goes the length of the car and has 8 LED lights evenly spaced on the board so the car gets lit up evenly.

    I think your layout is great because it's exactly the way you want it and will enjoy running it. And what's more important than you having fun building and operating it. I'm building my first layout, a 4x8 N scale too. Like you I don't expect my layout to be a museum quality, high tech, rivet counting masterpiece, but as long as I continue to enjoy the construction process, and enjoy operating my trains, I'm happy with it, which is what matters the most. Happy model railroading.😀

      @@JamesTuverson I just made a video of my layout in progress. The quality of the video isn't that great since I'm new to making YT videos and used my cellphone camera, but I'm hoping when I'm close to being done with the layout I have a better HD camera, and better-quality video to show people. Just go to my channel, and you'll see two videos. One video of the cat I used to have before I moved from California to Utah, and the other one of my layout. Even in the stage my layout is in now I already enjoy running my trains on it, especially my UP 4014 Big Boy excursion train. I got to see the real Big Boy in person twice when I lived in California, and it's an awe-inspiring moment I'll never forget.

I have 3 steam engines that require a minimum of a 15 inch radius or they jump off the track. I know...bummer on my part, but still I like this layout. I am working on a layout sorta like this one but using 18 inch and 15 inch curves and it is hard to do and make ends meet, but I am not going to give up on it. There's a time and a place for exquisite scenery but there is also a time and place for just having fun watching numerous trains going around tracks. Hi James. Wow, do I have a lot to learn. Watched all the videos in this series and so helpful. Your layout is incredible! So I'm a first timer. Downloaded Anyrail and put together a triple track layout using Kato Unitrack. My question is, to get pieces to fit together it was trial and error, maddening actually, over and over again, until I got a clean connection. Drove me crazy. Sometimes I try every possible piece and they're still too short or offest. Is there a formula for knowing what tracks will connect? Or, better yet, is there a tool in Anyrail where you need to connect say, a diagonal. Something akin to choosing two open ends and auto connecting them together by adding the right piece(s). I feel like once I get over this hump I'll be on my way. Thanks!

    • @JamesTuverson
      @JamesTuverson Год назад

      Hi! Thanks for checking out my videos. I’m sorry, I don’t have any experience in using Anyrail for track design, as I use SCARM. I know that in that program, there would also be some trial and error occasionally to get a “clean” perfect fit. And sometimes I’d know something should fit based on measurement but it wouldn’t show as a perfect fit on the design. It’s frustrating! Sometimes, an S64 64mm piece would NOT fit perfectly, but 2 x S32 32mm pieces would. Weird! So I can’t really help sorry, the best thing to do is just use the design software as a guide and know you’ll have to fudge a little with extra pieces sometimes to make it work. Good luck, buddy!

    • @JamesTuverson
      @JamesTuverson Год назад

      Thank you, Bill! So this is the deal with the experience of this performance track- it fun to run a single train, and use the 6 crossovers to move the train from loop to loop. Since I enjoy running my trains fast this way, it’s super cool. Then when I run multiple trains on multiple loops, it can get really challenging, especially if I’m changing loops, keeping multiple lines running, managing the reverse loops for the innermost loop, etc. I am never bored! 😁

    Hi James. Firstly wishing you a Blessed Christmas. Jana here from Singapore. I’ve been following your performance track layout videos. So much so I went to Japan, Osaka to buy the tracks and accessories based on your 4by8 plan in December. I must say the investment was substantial. Question: Are your trains fitted with mobile DCC decoders as I see that you used Digitrak Evolution Command station? Or is your set-up DC only as I see you use Kato turnout switches instead of using tortoise machine or DS64 stationary decoders.

    • @JamesTuverson
      @JamesTuverson Год назад

      Thank you for your interest Jana, and good luck with your trains! Yes, My system and locomotives are all DCC. I do use the manual Kato turnout switches, which work fine with the DCC system especially when you use the Kato dedicated accessory power supply to power them. I prefer the manual switches over more complicated tortoise machines or other automated switching--I love the satisfying "click" when I throw the manual switch! Please keep me posted on your progress and don't hesitate to ask me anything if I can help!!

    Very creative how you made your mountain, I think it looks awesome, around the eight minute mark when I saw it reminded me of that talking sorting hat in Harry Potter, the one that told the students when they first got to Hogwarts what house they are going into. Griffendor!

    Really like your southwest desert landscape, I just started my N scale layout, was laying on the couch watching TV last month and for some reason I got the idea to start a railway. Decided that the dining room was the only place to build it, Garage would have been ideal but in the summer it's around 150 degrees in there. I just received the Woodland Scenic Ridge layout today, I didnt have a clue how to start the layout that I want to make and I came across it on RUclips so I ordered it, it will give me a start I ordered the Atlas track kit for it, still being shipped, going to return it and go with KATO. I hope you don't get upset as I might try to duplicate your terrain somewhat.

      Thank for for writing to me! Of course I don’t mind if you recreate parts of my layout, I’d love you to! One of the reasons I stick with Woodland Scenics stuff was to make it EASIER for folks to duplicate stuff they liked on my layout for their own projects. Keep me posted and let me know if I can help!! Your note really made my day, so thank you.

    Like the layout a lot, but the water is too dark. It looks black.

    Hi James. Your attitude is spot on for a new railroader: do what you want, what pleases you. The ultra-realistic, meticulously detailed, complex layouts, that we see online are usually done by hobbyists who have been in model railroading for years, if not decades. They likely started out like you and I have. Every layout is a work in progress whether by a newbie or a seasoned veteran. We all learn new things from one another. We tweak and adjust and remodel along the way. We're not trying to build a Miniatur Wunderland, just something we can enjoy and be proud of. Go for it, James!!!

    Hi, James. You should very well be proud of your layout. Quite impressive for a first project. I'm working on my first ever model train layout -- a 4x8 N scale. I'm at that stage you mentioned of having to take up my tracks so to start my plastering. It is scary. Your step-by-step descriptions are a great help to me. Thank you and enjoy your trains.
