Respect for this achievement! Haste ya back. I hiked the WHW, but a race is really a challenge.
Thank you! It's an achievement to walk it too!
Well done both, it was an amazing day out there, some really nice video footage. cool
@RunWithJohn thank you! Very enjoyable and scenic course and we were really lucky with the weather too!
I’m doing this next year. How is the navigation of the course? I’ve climbed Cadris before but the navigation is the part making me most nervous
@ashleyanderson7382 Hi Ashley! The course follows well established trails/paths and some sections of roads but it's not marked. You need to carry a map/compass and be able to use them in emergency but the organisers provide a GPX file, which will keep you right on track the whole way to the finish. If your watch does not have navigation feature on it, you can download an app and do it on your phone. Obviously it's more convenient having the route on your watch snd I'd recommend investing in a decent watch. GB Ultras also do recce events in the run up to the main event, if you want to familiarise yourself with the route. All details are on the Ultra Wales website, right down at the bottom of the page. Recce runs are really good way to check out the course, before the event and you get to meet a lot of other participants before the main event. Either way, this is a fantastic event and I'm sure you'll love it!!! Good luck.
Sorry, I meant to type the course is mostly not marked. Some trickier sections had some markers but vast majority of the course, you are your own guide.
Thanks Mate, much appreciate your response! I’ve recently upgraded to a Garmin 965 so will defo look for the gpx file. Great mention about the reece runs also, I will certainly look at those! 😄
Hi, I am running this on Saturday , are road shoes suitable for the whole distance?
@geoffmccartney7959 hi there, yes. The course is flat and consists of mostly tarmac canal paths. Road shoes are more than suitable! I'm volunteering this year, if nothing changes before the weekend, I'll see you at CP1, CP5 and the finish line. Good luck!
@@mattjuchniewicz2243 Thanks for your reply ,I’ll keep an eye out for you.
Hi , was looking at doing this next year, furthest so far is marathon distance, i was wondering if the routes are clearly marked or if you have to navigate using gps etc?
Hi, the course is very easy to navigate. You follow the Clyde-Forth and Union Canals, so as long as you're running by the canal you're fine. Any turns you have to take are either marked or there is a marshal there to direct you. You cannot get lost. I had a GPX running on my watch, however did not have to refer to it at all. You'll enjoy it, it's a great event 👍
@@mattjuchniewicz2243 excellent response , thanks very much ,will sign up when entries come out for 2025 🤝
Nice video! I am thinking of going over to Scotland to do this next year. How difficult is it to do without a crew, do you think?
@martinscofield7477 hi Martin, thank you - glad you liked it. Totally achievable without crew, between the aid stations and drop bags you'll have sufficient nutrition and kit to complete the Race. I did it unsupported last year. The only reason I opted for a crew this year was specific dietary requirements due to my digestive system issues. The aid stations have more than enough food, including hot food and drink to get you going. I could not recommend this race enough!
Great effort….well done! 👍🍷
Thank you 😊
Great run again Matt! was so much fun watching your dot and seeing how you were doing until it stopped moving and I was worried for a little while. After having a DNF on the GB Ultra Scotland 100 myself, I have bounced back a got a 100miler under my belt, couple more and I may be ready for a 2025 RAS attempt :=) What shoes did you use, were they all Speedgoats?
Hi Martin, thank you so much and well done on completing your first 100 miler! It's very personal and only you will know when you're ready but I had only completed 1 x 100 miler before attempting the RAS last year. I ran with a few people last and this year, who had never done a 100 prior to the race. Consistency or your training and your weekly volume with back to back long runs is key. Get your legs used to long miles and the rest is in your head... I might see you on the start line then! Thanks again!
Oh, and yes, I had 4 pairs of Speedgoat 5s and tonne of socks!
Fantastic two in a row well done Matt.loved the video amazing scenery your wife looked after you hope your feet are okay thanks again
@paulsummerly8203 hi Paul, thank you so much. Yes, she was amazing, as we're Mike and Martin. Recovering well, but feet are still sore!
Nice video Matt! Did the same race and I am glad someone captured the spirit. All the best!
@SewerDroid thank you, glad you enjoyed it! You finished just ahead of me and we chatted in the changing room afterwards! Well done on completing the RAS at first attempt and with a gold buckle. Fantastic achievement 👏
Thanks Matt! Congrats to you, too!
Well done bud great video what did you use to navigate and did you have any problems , battery life etc thanks and brilliant
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. I used the gpx provided by the organisers and had it running on my Garmin Fenix 6XPRO Solar. I do know most of the route but still referred to my watch a lot, especially at night. I recharged my watch half way through the course whilst taking a rest (battery charger pack with my support crew). No issues with navigation whatsoever, did not have to refer to a map. Some sections are quite overgrown and the trail just disappears, and it's hard to see the marker posts, which makes it more difficult at night, as I said. Vast majority of the trail is well marked and clear to follow. Hope that helps.
I'm not surprised the cows seemed impressed with your efforts. They know a running legend when they see one! 💪😁🏃♂️ Well done, Matt. Great video.
I do love the cows! Thank you so much. Far from a legend, but if the cows are impressed, I'm happy! 😂
Fantastic video and I am in it 😀 Great to briefly talk to you around the kist in the forest Huge congratulations 🎉💪👏✌️
Thank you so much! Oh yes! We talked for a moment and you said you watched my last year's video? How did you get on? Sorry, I didn't get your name...
@@mattjuchniewicz2243 my name is Jiri, competitor 87, finished in 91h26 😊 RAS was the hardest thing I have done 👍 … so far 😂
@georgelopata5007 ah yes!!! I remember seeing your name on the finishers list! Well done mate, cracking effort 👌 There are some incredible finish times from the top competitors but even to finish it is a massive achievement. Huge well done, 91hrs is a very good, comfortable finish!
Superb effort Matt. We met in CP10 Galashiels where I had the pleasure of leading the Checkpoint. You need to get the skin on the bottom of your feet softened up - skin like a rhino!! Well done on another RAS buckle and for simply tabbing your way to the finish line when obviously in a lot of discomfort.
Hi and thank you for all your help at the checkpoint! Funny you should mention that! I was going to have a proper pedicure session, pumice stone, moisturiser, the lot, a few days before the event but was quite busy and had to skip it. You're absolutely right though, it was one of the issues! Thanks again 👍
Superb mate. Another great account of this most epic event. Hope your feet are resting well. I could feel your pain those last 50-60 miles 💪💪
Thanks Ross, much appreciated mate. May I add, you started it! Watching your video from 2022 really inspired me to do it the following year... yes, had a few days off work and feet are getting better thankfully!
Wow! You are at it again! Would you tell us, please, how you balance recovery and training between ultras?
Another one down... I stopped overthinking these things and run and rest purely by how I feel... this was my A race for this year and with the distance covered, I'll need to rest a bit longer. Once I feel like I'm OK to start running again, it'll be gently back on it for a week or two, then back to my usual, around 60 mile weeks. No rush though...
Matt Just wanted an opportunity to say thank you for your offer of help. You passed me around the 40mile mark (I think) I was already in trouble and on one leg, you offered to stop and help at a risk to your own progress. I made it to 130 on Sunday when it became untenable, but thank you again for your kind gesture. Kind regards George (see you next year)
@georgeb.311 Hi George, I'd never leave anyone if they needed help. Would've gladly stayed with you, if you needed assistance. I'm glad you got to the aid station ok and it's incredible you carried on till mile 130! I'm sure you'll smash it next year and hope to see you at the start line again!
Great video, i think you may have convinced me to enter next year
@glenanderson4051 thank you! The video doesn't do it any justice really, it's such a scenic course. You will absolutely love it!
Running 50 miles is fucking insane.
I suppose that's one way to put it... good fun, though!
Looked tough great scenery great video.hipe youve recovered. Thanks.
@paulsummerly8203 it was tough indeed, but the scenery kept me going. The course was spectacular. All good, thank you - fully recovered and ready for the RAS in 9 days!
well done, i was a volunteer at checkpoint 4 and taking your number at the finish, everyone commented on how tough the course was, but everyone was still smiling at the end.
Thank you, and thanks for volunteering too! Your efforts were very much appreciated. The scenery and all the help from you guys kept everyone going!
So glad to see a new post! You’ve been missed!
@belwynne1386 thank you, that's very kind! I was having editing software issues on my computer, hence the delay. All sorted now and Race Across Scotland in 10 days time, so next video will be uploaded quite soon! Thanks again, I'm glad someone likes these!
Cracking effort - and well done for videoing as much as you did.
Thank you, it was a toughie! These race videos make for a nice race memento and remind me to slow down a bit and pace myself!
Fantastic mate! I did it as well (just the WHW challenge) and found it so difficult especially through the night between bein glass and rowardennan. Cant imagine adding in Ben Nevis before it as it was really past my limit already. I came in just under 26 hours
Well done and thank you! The night section was tough indeed. That Beinglas to Rowardennan scramble was brutal and for me it was at about 70 miles into the race. Half way through it I banged my head on an overhanging rock, chipped my tooth and nearly knocked myself out 🤣... As for the Ben Nevis addition, you definitely feel the initial climb for the rest of the race!
Great video, though I’m gutted to have been filmed getting your name wrong at registration 🙁 My turn on Saturday, the weather is looking more runnable!
Thanks Luke, glad you liked it! Hah! Nobody gets it right the first time, I always have to add that it's spelled with a 'J'! Good luck mate, you know the course and know what to expect. The atmosphere and scenery will get you through. Enjoy 👍
Fantastic , i was was on the shorter course that started after you .
Thank you. Hope your race went well too and you enjoyed it!
Loved it agreat video loved the scenery and well done to you many thanks.
Thanks Paul, glad you enjoyed it! The first half was stunning indeed and we had fantastic weather. The night and morning of day 2 was brutal. Fantastic race though. Thanks again 👍
Cracking effort mate. Adding Ben Nevis to the challenge is no mean feat. Hope you recovery goes well 👏👏💪💪
Cheers Ross, this was a toughie indeed. You can definitely feel the Ben climb in your legs for the rest of the race. Truth be told, I've never been so fatigued after a race before, even RAS. Off work for a while now, so plenty rest. Thanks again 👍
Congratulations! That is an insane achievement. Could you tell us more about your training for 17,500 ft of elevation gain and that sort of distance?
Thank you, racking up miles and elevation in training. Nothing else for it. My cumulative weekly mileage is around 60 miles and includes back to back long runs on the weekend. I train in the hills, whenever I can, work and other commitments permitting. The hillier the event, the more hills you need to do in training (calculate feet of elevation per mile or meters of elevation per km of the event you're training for and then try to replicate it in your training). That's my approach anyway and it certainly works for me. Ultra running is a very individual thing though...
Thanks for your video report, I did the WHW challenge race but fell badly at the bottom of the Devil's Staircase and DNFed. Would love to try the Nevis section in the future.
Thanks for watching! Sorry about your DNF. There are lot of very rough/rocky paths on that section and on that particular downhill it's very easily done. Hope you'll have another go and I would definitely recommend the Ben Nevis option. It definitely is a toughie. The Ben climb stings and you'll feel it for the rest of the race. It's awesome 👌
A great watch. Looking forward to Saturday now.
Thank you! It's a fantastic event and a very challenging but hugely rewarding course. You'll love it. Gutted I can't be there this year, actually...
Amazing race, very well done 😅😅😅
Thank you. Yes, it's a fantastic event!
Thanks for this video. You made it look so easy!!! I am attempting this one this year. Yikes!
Easy it was definitely not 🤣 but it was certainly very enjoyable! Very flat and mostly runnable course apart from a little climb at the Falkirk Wheel. You will enjoy it, great atmosphere and, as with all GB Ultras races, it's very well supported!
Great watch! Your wife was soo determined and you were really encouraging too!
Thank you, glad you liked it. She did so well, very proud of her!
I’m going to give this a go next year. Any tips for G2E Ultra..I’m giving it a go in October!!!
@lornamc5928 I'd say, wear comfortable shoes. Don't need trail shoes for this one. If it's your first one then slow down and enjoy it. Save energy for latter stages of the race. Run your own race, don't try to keep up with the fast ones. Only person you're racing is yourself. Don't be scared to run/walk early in the race - people start fast and burn out early. Stay on top your nutrition and electrolyte intake and look after your feet. If you feel a hot spot developing, stop and put a plaster on it before it becomes a problem (have a small roll of zinc oxide tape or kt tape type in your pack just in case). Divide the course into smaller, manageable chunks. Don't think about the full distance ahead of you. Just focus on the next checkpoint. Trust your training, if you prepared well, you'll be fine. It will be painful and you'll be exhausted but you'll manage. Just keep going. Good luck and enjoy!
Well done both of you!
Thank you! And well done you! Only browsing through the event photos this morning, I saw you were there too!
Hi Matt! When you go to every station, you asked for tailwind. Do you know the strentgh? I put 2 scoops on my 500 ml flask, and I will be running this race this year...so wondering if i can count of the tailwind provide by them or if i should take all from home. Any infor really appreciated. Thanks.
Hi there, truth be told I'm not sure. These are pre-mixed before the event starts. I also use tailwind on my long runs but I buy sachets, so unsure how much is in 1 scoop that you use. If it's any use, I dissolve a sachet in about 750ml of water as per instructions (I think the instructions say 500-750 but I don't like it too strong) and it tastes the same as the event one. I think 1 sachet is 54g. Hope this helps. I wouldn't worry about it anyway. Between tailwind and all the salty and sweet food options provided, you will not be short for carbs or electrolytes during the event. Good luck and enjoy. It's one of my favourite Ultras!
@@mattjuchniewicz2243 Thank you for your reply 😁 Happy running and great video!
Woow very well done 🎉🎉😅😅,, thanks for sharing this
Thank you, glad you liked it!
Oh no. 🙈 But these thinks happen. Its character building 👌
They unfortunately do sometimes. It's definitely the best way to look at it and if anything, it definitely made Alannah stronger... 😁👍
Glad she is on the mend.goodluck for the ultra .hope there will be a video of it .
Thank you. Alannah is fully recovered and progressively clocking up miles in training. We're both looking forward to JMWU and I'm sure she will smash it! There definitely will be a wee video made!
Well done. Looking forward to this in Feb. Thanks for your video.
Thank you! It's a nice, scenic course. Fingers crossed for good weather!
Hope Alanna (? spelling?) is okay and is not put off the outdoors. Best wishes out there in 2024.
Thank you! Thankfully not! She's fine now, fully recovered and back on the trails. If anything, she's even more determined to up her mileage and venture into the world of ultras.
Thanks for that video. Signed up for this year and that was a fantastic little insight into what's ahead. Fantastic performance from you too👍🏼
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it and found it useful. The video doesn't do the course any justice. Very challenging but extremely rewarding event. You will love it! Good luck!
Great video
Thank you, glad you liked it 👍😫👍
impressive. i'm just talking myself into signing up for the 50 mile one
Thank you. I absolutely love the Southern Upland Way. Started with 50 last year and did the 100 and the RAS this year. Cannot recommend these events enough. Great challenge and an amazing adventure!
Great video and well done!
Cheers Tim, always a great race and a great weekend away in the Cheviots! See you on the SCW👍
Great run that one . wooden medals aren't the best
Yup, I keep coming back every year for more punishment! And I agree, proper metal ones are nicer. Trail Outlaws do really nice, proper metal bling!
Well done on the PB. Great effort.
Thank you. Really pleased with my time but there were some mind blowing efforts from the top runners. New course record set at just under 4 hours!
Well done matt another great video.enjoyed the scenery but it looked tough.
Hi Paul, thank you! Yes, it's a stunning course but definitely one of the most challenging trail marathons out there. It kicks my backside every year but I keep coming back.
Great video thanks. Sorry to have missed it this year, hope to be back next year ,possibly for the double!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it! I'm definitely coming for the double again, so will see you there!
Well done sir. Very inspiring.
