Sandy's DIY Health Advocacy

Hi Impact
Hi. My name is Sandy, and my goal is to help you to become your own health advocate thereby enhancing your health and wellness journey. I have nearly 30 years experience as an advanced practice nurse, specifically, a nurse anesthetist. During that time, I've learned much about wellness, illness, the health care business, and process of making good, methodical decisions. Up until now, most of the beneficiaries (besides myself) have been my friends and family. It brings me great joy to help them to understand and actively participate in their own health maintenance. My wish is to expand this to a wider community on RUclips. I hope you will subscribe and join me on this journey. Thanks so much for checking out my channel.

Hi everyone. I was recently diagnosed with osteoporosis, and I've designed a multi-pronged approach to deal with it at this time.

Here I am. Please forgive me. I really needed some time to make an honest personal assessment about whether to continue with social media. My channel had drifted down a covid rabbit hole, though I originally intended it to be about health advocacy and self education. On the bright side, in taking that time to assess, I have found I have lots of options for future content & discussion...assuming...

This is an interesting product. However, it is made with animal products (and does not say it is GMO-free) . Have you explored a vegetarian option?
@judithgerber4608 I struggled with that also, but there's no such thing as vegetarian collagen. And definitely no "wannabe" products that have been shown to increase bone density. I am viewing it as medicinal. BTW, it DOES say that it's an animal product..all over the label. In fact, collagen is , by definition, animal product. IMHO they are an above board company. Be well
thank you. I am physically exhausted and disabled from having osteoporosis. long story including a false and lazy dx of dementia. just absolute ignorance on the part of the medical professionals I visited. not excited about any supplements, another long story. I too am young.
Welcome back! I'm definitely interested in osteoporosis content & what you're doing about calcium. I also have 0% calcium build up, and was considering taking calcium supplements. I'm so glad that you have recovered from each of your covid infections - I wish there was some way to know who will be fine & who will get LC. I still use your Readimask discount code :)
Hi Sandy! Good to see you! I think it would be great for you to get back into doing videos and discussions. I learned a lot from you and the group during Covid so I anticipate that I will learn from any topic you choose to discuss. I recently got diagnosed with osteoporosis as well and want to address it as naturally as possible too so that would definitely be a topic of interest for me. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge!
@marydietrich6352 thanks so much. Yes, osteoporosis seems to be going around. I've got a plan together for myself, and I will share it. Be well

I wondered where you disappeared to ! It’s great to see you . Many of the challenges you are facing is what so many of us are struggling with as we journey into our 60s and beyond so your content is relevant and your suggestions are helpful. I watched all your CMC videos, just had mine done 8 days ago. Did you have more pain after the first few days? That’s what I’m noticing. It’s weird. Also, I got rid of all my black plastic kitchen utensils etc after watching you. So please stick around!
@janetfowler-g5c ❤️❤️❤️ day 8? You are still very much in the thick of it. I recall pain got worse, got better, changed maybe to a different kind of pain. Be patient! Be well
Hi, Sandy. Good to see you again. We connected over Covid and we continued to mostly agree and we stayed connected when you lessened your behavioral precautions. My life events are taking me away from YT, so you may not see much interaction from me. I am remaining a subscriber. Stay healthy!
@@mscatnipper2359 hi. Thanks for commenting. Be well, whatever your persuits.
Hello, nice to see you. I am still waiting for a talk about kitchen pans, and now what about those black items we are not supposed to use in the kitchen. Osteoporosis and how to handle it is of interest, plus numerous other topics that could be done. As for Covid, your advice was so timely, and I learned a lot to protect myself. I am very appreciative of how hard you worked on that. But then I got a life, and I don’t feel threatened at this time. I also receive a newsletter from a reputable epidemiologist who gives that latest about what communicable diseases to watch out for, and which are very low at the time. All in all I have moved on.
Happy to hear that. Me too. We'll start correcting the channel path together .
Good to see you Sandy! I too was diagnosed with osteoporosis recently and I was shocked. I have been athletic all my life and have an athletic build, not petite or small boned. I don’t run anymore, but I lift weights, walk for exercise, and eat a very balanced diet (basically mediterranean). I also take supplements to maintain an optimal vitamin d level. My Dexa Scan results suggested I go on a Bisphosphonate drug, which I refuse to do. Fosamax led to my mother’s death. I would love to hear the holistic approaches you are taking.
@@sassyt1545 agree, it's kind of a kick-in-the-@ss diagnosis. I will talk about it shortly. I've started developing a plan, but it'll be at least a year before I can know anything about results. Be well

@@maureenegginton1891 hi. And thank you

This was a very painful procedure! Fifth day from surgery and pain a bit better. Will think hard before I do the other hand.
Hi Sandy. My surgery was 6 days ago. After viewing your posts multiple times, I was not concerned about the procedure and knew the result was worth the effort. My only concern was the plane ride home. When I informed the doctor, she set me up for a flawless experience. They gave me a 5-day nerve block. It was removed yesterday. Honestly, I expected to wake up to a world of pain, but I have no pain at all. I am so indebted to those doctors and nurses. They were amazing. Next week the stitches come out and I get a cast. When the other hand is done, I'll agree to the nerve block. It sure is a learning curve to have it attached to you, since your arm has no feeling and seems to lost in space. It was worth it for me. Again, I was blessed to find your site and sincerely appreciate your thoughtful and generous posts to help us get past this hurdle. Thank you so much. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!
Lipiflow was $700 per eye in my opthamologist - $1400 for both
Ice is definitely your friend when reducing pain. Although it also cuts the swelling, the absence of pain allows quicker healing. At least that’s what I’ve concluded.
I chose to sleep on the couch instead of the bed because I’m a side sleeper. I could prop my arm up against the side of the couch while I slept. It worked pretty well. My husband missed me in bed, but he didn’t want me in pain.
I'm only 3 days since the surgery. I can't take narcotics so only tylenol and ibuprofen. I'm not in any pain now but I continue those meds to keep fevef and swelling down. In a week I get the removable splint. From there we will see.
Thank you so much for all your posts. I have found your advice so helpful. Unfortunately I am 3 months post op and not doing well. In one of your videos you talked about having pain in that joint near your index finger and I am having a lot of pain in that area and was just curious what your surgeon said that was. I had the pin and cast for 6 weeks and I feel like it's where that pin was even though it's been over a month since the pin was removed.
@@taraisabella8970 honestly, they didn't have great answers for this. I think it was extremely stiff from the immobility and needed to move
I had my surgery 11.08.24 and was almost exactly the steps with the soft cast and now the hard cast, but my hard cast is digging into the back of my hand and creating a lot of discomfort. My question is about the thumb joint being able to move or not; it was my understanding that has to remain immobilized in order to heal properly, is this true or is it okay for this to move? I am able to do almost everything and sometimes it seems like too much. I have it checked out tomorrow, any questions I should be asking the doctor?
I did a lot of planks!
On forearms of course.
Salt massage is ecstacy!
I exercised my arm, fingers, wrist and shlds prior to surgery and got everything nice and strong. I developed some very minor dupitrons contacture post op, but ROM is still good. I tried to learn to write left handed and it looked like a first grader's...I'm up to middle school now and still pre op.😅
I must have ice! I'm gonna ask surgeon to ice it prior to wrapping and then wrapping another really. frozen pack for ride home. And icing fingers is effective in pain relief. There is not much harm by over icing bc it thaws out fast. Also used canabis tincture sublingualy and get very good pain relief with it. It reduces my body tension that the pain triggers (and just makes pain worse). Im able to be sort of in pain but still happy and not so dramatically in pain. Talking to my thumb helps the pain as well. My thumb turns into this separate being that I can talk to and nurture...It only works if you're sincere and not doing it for laughs. I am able to separate from the pain this way...try it!
It's not only very uncomfortable and even painful sometimes sleeping with a big hard tight arm cast, but I'm also very afraid of furtherly damaging my two fractured wrist bones the Colles and the Lunar and one or more is slightly broken into several peices, I'm really afraid that in a deep sleep I can turn positions as I usually do and that this can move the bones too much out of alignment again.
What about freezer and storage bags that just close together that aren't ziplock?
Thank you for this video. I am considering it. but oh gosh, not being able to get dressed make up for work etc.. and of course the pain is what is scary for me
you havent mentioned nor shown the forearm incisions. did you have pain there when using the arm?
@@detwalker7874 cramping, and it was temporary
Its been 4 wks since my surgery. I still have a lot of pain, including in my forearm where the tendon was cut. The surgeon also cut under the thumb in the crease to reposition the overextension of the thumb. idk why, it didnt bother me. the incisions arent even close to being healed shut and extremely sore to touch. Yet i see you massaging your hands where your incisions dont show at all, and you dont have pain. Did you have any pain in the forearm tendon?? Maybe i injured mine? Its been very hard living alone having to find ways to do everything around house trying to use only one hand, with no help and take care of all my cats too. Oh, and my forearm seems a little disfigured, flatter, without as much structure of tendon ... skin hangs flabby, wrinkled like an old person.
I just had this surgery thank you for being so informative! I am still in the throbbing pain phase since I just had the surgery ouch ! Anyhow, thank you again ! Sandy, that’s my name lol

Wish I had never had mine touched. It’s only been 2 weeks and I’m sick of the cast and the lack of use and the pain !

Thank you for your indept comments and your experience that you went thru. The other day my hand surgeon chose to inject my thumb joint and he said that it should take a few weeks to see any results. He said if this doesn't help the next step is to inject a chemical into my thumb joint and burn the nerves to alleviate the pain, he said sometimes this procedures works and sometimes it doesn't. Which brings me to he final opinion. He said that I would need to have the exact CMC surgery that you went thru. I am afraid of the surgery, because I am not sure how I can do things for myself, such as showering, washing my hair and doing light chores such as washing/folding laundry. I am a baby when it comes to pain and I cannot take any narcotics for pain, because of certain meds RXs that I take and some narcotics such as codine cause me to vomit. I do well on extra strength Tylenol, but I know that it will not help with the pain that you've described. I am sure that there are other RX pain meds that I can be given. Bottom line is that I am a man and I admit that I cannot take any excruciating pain. Is there anything that you can tell me that would help me in my decision making or ease my mind? I wish you well and much continued success on your next CMC surgery. Thank you and God bless you. I look forward to hearing from you.
@phillyd.5011 really, the only thing i can say is that you will know when and if it's time. As long as you're not sure, it's not time yet. It gets to a point where you cannot go on. You'll know. And some people don't get there, which would be great. If you have to do it, all I can say is eyes on the prize. You just have to get through it and keep focusing on the outcome. Be well
Thank you Sandy! I will keep praying that God does what's best for me and my faith gets me thru everything! Good luck on your next surgery!
Got my gloves a few days ago and watched your video today. I have developed trigger finger on my right hand and splints won’t stay put. I don’t know why these work, but they do! I am wearing the bamboo gloves, also small like you, which shocked me. I was certain I was going to regret ordering the small. But, I followed their chart and they fit well - not tight in the least. Thank you for your thorough review, even though I watched it after the fact.
Appreciate your input, I had my left hand done in April and your tips were huge! The Ice and the foam OT block was really helpful. Recovery has been amazing was able to play my drums and guitar within 60 days. The week of thanksgiving I’m getting my right hand done. It’s weird but my pain level in right hand dropped a bit over the last 6 months. However, my mom had this done 30 years ago and it only gets worse so I am definitely getting done since I am going to retire in two years and don’t want to take a chance for the future!
I am so blessed to have found your CMC reviews for my upcoming surgery. I have been preparing for my recovery by purchasing clothes that will be easier to put on with one hand as well as the splint covers, etc. Most significantly, I recognize how important my management of pain will be in the early phase of recovery. Years ago, I rejected the suggested spinal fusion for a disc at C5-C6 and opted for the Philadelphia collar. I wore the collar for six month and was on a steady regimen of pain medication. It was an awful experience, but I am thankful for the experience as my disc finally moved back into position and I now have full movement of my neck again. Simply knowing that my wrist will be weak and compromised when the cast is removed was a major alert for me. I most certainly will work hard to get my pain under control and deal with the pain. I had to smile when you recommended on a way to channel the brain's obsessive desire to focus on only one thing. Yes, hot water then cold water will be a wake up for the brain to deal with the pain in a more constructive way. In the same vain, years ago I had an infection on my scalp when a doctor messed up a simple procedure to remove a pilar cyst. It became infected and I was in terrible pain. One day my sister suggested we have some tea. She inadvertently spilled boiling hot water on my leg. What an enlightening moment! My brain stopped focusing on my head for the first time in weeks, because there was a crisis elsewhere. Honestly, I learned that if you can change the singular focus of one issue, the nerves have a chance to make gains without the unnecessary drama of the same screaming pain day after day. Thank you so much for generous insight of how to approach this procedure in a constructive and productive way. You are a super star!!!

I am almost 3 weeks in my splint. I have pain and I don't know if I pulled or pushed or picked anything up to cause it to still have a little redness and looks swollen or bumping around the incision. The incision is fine and beautiful. I am concerned about how it looks. Is it something I need to talk to the PA about or has anyone had the same problem

I have received three injections in both wrists. The last injection only lasted about a month and half. I am in a lot more pain and my left side is also hurting more. I have an appointment Tuesday to talk about surgery. I am wondering if you had a tendon removed from your arm and put in the wrist? It creeps me out removing a tendon don't I need that tendon? Is it painful where they take the tendon from after surgery? How much pain were you in after surgery the 2nd day?
