1948 Chevy Guy
США
Добавлен 28 июн 2020
A couple years ago I bought this 1948 Chevrolet Fleetmaster in hope to be able to do minor maintenance and sharing my videos with people of similar interests. Unfortunately I became ill in the fall and had to part with my beloved Chevy this spring. I kept the videos posted in hope they can help someone but I won’t be posting anything new unfortunately. Thank you all for the warm and supportive comments and I hope that some of you will post videos to help others.

Costco LED Lantern Conversion to Lightbulb
Thank you to those who subscribed to my "1948 Chevy Guy" channel. I hope the few videos I made were helpful. Unfortunately, I had to part with my Chevy but I will occasionally make a video or two when I find a subject that might be helpful. I hope converting my Costco lanterns will interest some of you and perhaps save you a few buck in the process. The lanterns are fine, it's just the crappy 12 volts LED drivers that ruin them. With the lightbulb conversion, a good cleaning, a couple coats of wax, these lanterns will last a long time.
Thank you for watching

1948 Chevy Fleetmaster Transmission fluid change

This is a video of basic maintenance on my 1948 Chevy Fleetmaster Country Club Coupe. On this video I replace the transmission fluid on a manual 3 speed transmission as well as engine oil.
Vfry good
Thank you so much.
Easy to follow video. This is a way cheaper solution and gives one a lot of flexibility ... you can choose your brightness and your white shades, if you get the adjustable LED light bulbs, you can put them on a dimmer switch ... you can change to colored lights for the seasons. I think you could run the hot (black wire) to the dawn/dusk sensor and then run the hot wire out of that and attach it to the black wire on the socket and the light will turn on at dark and turn off at light. Thank you Chevy Guy.
Thank you, i am going to fix my costco lights now instead of buying new. You made it look easy, so i am going to do it.!!!
Good video. Thanks. I'm going to give this a try. Do you have a crankcase breather on your engine? Mine has a pipe that dumps soot onto the ground during startup. I'm wondering if I can put a catch can on it to stop the soot blowing onto the concrete driveway. Cheers
I don't remember, I aold the car several years ago
What paint are you using ???
some left over brown paint and beige from a mural I did 10 years ago. Nothing special
Thank you so much!! I just did this conversion and it was so easy thanks to your video! You just saved me a ton of effort and money!
I’m have the same lanterns . Do you know the name brand or how to order more led lights if I can just replace the led may be easier for me
Exelent job, I could do the same with my lights 👍
Hi can you convert the costco lantern in to light bulb just like you did but leave the photo sensor connected so it works like it first did when new
I guess you could but I removed them because I wanted to control them manually.
Hey there, great video. In your description, you have two product links. Does the one for the ceramic fixture come complete with everything needed for this conversion?
the ceramic fixtures are just the fixture and wiring. You will also need the lamp rods (Amazon and big box stores) and lightbulbs
I noticed the bottom transmission to bell housing bolts go from bell housing into the trans. I knew truck trans were like that but didn’t know early Chevy cars were the same. I learned something new and it’s always a good day when I learn new things, Thank You!
Thank you for detailed video… I did this but left in the sensor, was hoping it would work… unfortunately now when I turn on the lights… they flicker… makes a clicking sound like a blinker in a car… (weird) no matter what type of bulb I use… the only difference in mine is I left the sensor in…🥲😢 guess I will try one more time to see if I can fix this. Darn was hoping this would be the fix… any suggestions???
The sensor might be 12 volts?
thank you for posting this simple and effective solution to save fixtures and money.
Glad it helped
Mr chevy guy I'm looking for a 48 chassis let me know
sorry can't help you, I sold my 48 a couple years ago. Best of luck in your search
Converted 2 of these today! 😁Thx!
great! glad I was able to help!
Great idea..I have the same light fixtures.
Thanks for posting this! Mine started flashing and I replaced the driver.. Then another problem.. Fortunately I bought two of the Altairs at Costco, so I had a reserve. Next time, I will be doing this. This is somewhat similar to what I did inside my house - replacing CFL can lights which had ballasts die with standard socket cans and LED bulbs. Thanks again!
what about the sensor ?
I disconnected the sensor when I bought the lights, so if you want a light sensor, you will need to swap it for a 120V since the original is 12 volts
Hi. Is there a list of the items you used so I could buy them please
I added items list in the description
Great video, im tackling this task today.
What kind of transmission oil do I use on my 51 chevy styleline deluxe? It's a 3 on the tree trans
I used Lucas 80W90 heavy duty gear oil
@@ChevyGuy-kx7imhow much do you use?
Awesome extremely helpful
I am so happy you posted this. I finally have changed four of our LED parts for bulbs. Kits come with everything you need. I was surprised how fast you can install the bulb parts. I still have two more to do but I am so happy. I can use colored bulbs in these now for the Holidays. I was always kind of bummed I couldn't use them. I truly appreciate your showing this video. I had not thought of this. My husband is happy too, he didn't have to do it!😅. Thank you! I also just left the photocell working. I just left it as is. We have 6 lights, four on the front of our shop and these save us having to go out there and turn them on and off every night. They do not have to be disabled. I am thrilled about that!
May I know what kits you used? I also wish to leave the photocell working. TIA.
I posted the list of items needed in the description
thank u
What axle is that? My '48 chevy truck looks similar but I'm having a tough time nailing down the ID on it.
that looks like gear oil🤔
I used Lucas 80W90 heavy duty gear oil
i didnt see a link for parts
I have added the list of parts in the description
thank you i have had mine for about 9 mos and your video was very helpful again thank you
Altair lighting now has a repair kit for $ 16.00 includes a new plate with built in driver and a new sensor. Easy install
I found a kit, but it was $36. Can you help us find what you are talking about?
If you call Altair directly, they sell the cheaper kit. I haven't heard if they last a bit longer, I have two (out of three)of these lights bad now, and I'm trying to figure out the best solution.
I have these lights and the LED burned out. I was wanting to change the LED so it matched the others.
Thanks! Great video. Does the light kit come with the little rod that you put the wires through? The rod that stabilizes the light kit?
Hay which transmission oil did you use ? Beste Wishes
I used Lucas 80W90 heavy duty gear oil
You are very underrated please make more car videos real knowledge
What a nice thing to say! Unfortunately my knowledge is limited and I don't have my 48 Chevy to work on anymore, so I only post something when I think I can help some other folks..Thank you for the comment, I really appreciate it
went to Costco and picked up an $8 carriage light swapped out the lamp /light parts and wired it to to the dusk light sensor it to 15 minutes including drilling a large hole for the wiring and done. Inexpensive fix..
what do you mean $8 carriage light. was there a clearance?
Good alternative and i suggest to use a dawn & dusk bulb to replace the photocell.
I followed this video and it works perfectly. Thanks for posting
i have a 48 fleetmaster 2 door town sedan i planned on refinishing the dash and interior window trims i started calling around for quotes on hydro dipping but i might give this a try you should make a video of your wood panel 48
unfortunately, I had to sell my '48
Thank you for making this video
Glad it was helpful!
Hi Chevy guy. I loves this video. The only problem I have is that I can't find the light socket with the nipple that you used. Can you tell me where you got it or what is the proper name. Steven
Glad it helped you. I found them on Amazon. Here is the link www.amazon.com/gp/product/B083918KSB/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Lowes carries them and so does a good True Value Hardware store…
Great video thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Nice video! What's the reason you didn't replace the LED and drivers?
I have about 8 or 10 of these and several of them failed due to sub-standard drivers. So I decided to eliminate the drivers and led. Now they are working fine.
I did that on all 6 of our lights two years ago, they all failed in two years. Changing to bulbs is so easy, I used LED Edison bulbs in each. They look so nice! I can use different colored bulbs in them now for the Holidays. But I keep the automatic on feature on each. Works great!
I have a 1948 chevy stylemaster just did a transmission rebuild trying to see if I have to put oil in the bellhousing area or does the transmission oil reach back there if I do have to put oil in bellhousing area how much
Disconnect the speedo cable and remove the outer speedo gear then pump about 6-8 oz in through the hole.
Can you show how to do an oil change?
that was the point of this video...
Can you send the link to the parts for the conversion lightbulb?
Sure, here is the link for light sockets from Amazon. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B083918KSB/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and the threaded nipples www.amazon.com/gp/product/B083918KSB/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. The light bulbs are also from Amazon and easy to find elsewhere. Good luck with your project
very nice video, could you please put link for all parts again, both of above links are pointing to holder only. threaded nipple + retaining nut link is missing.
could you have wired it so the dusk til dawn sensor still worked?
The sensor that comes with the fixture is a low voltage DC sensor. Tou need to replace it with the 120V sensor.
Great video I have a 1949 Chevrolet sedan skyline
Does the dusk till dawn sensor still work with the bulb conversion?
No he took it out.
You have to replace the sensor with the 120V sensor. The one that come with the fixture is a low voltage DC sensor.
It did NOT work on mine, it caused the lights to flicker….
I have 3 out of the total 5 flashing! I need a fix to this. There is no way to retain the photocell feature, correct ?
I was wondering the same thing. Did you get an answer if we could keep the photocell.
I think you could just connect the photocell wires to the power wires? He took it out because he said he didn’t need the feature anymore but he didn’t say you couldn’t use it
Did you try hooking it up like the other guys mentioned? Did it work? It should work if the photocell was rated for 120vac since in the new configuration, it's tied directly to power. Otherwise, would just need to buy another photocell that's compatible with 120vac and replace that too
So, the new ones don't have a separate wiring for the photocell feature. I was able to correct them later, without difficulty.
Thank you
