Don't trust the Camino del Norte guidebook! Day 21

A Guidebook can be a massive help on the Camino de Santiago. If you are walking the Camino del Norte be aware that sometimes the prices, routes and advice are a little off. That is why I personally often watch a video vlog before the trip and make notes of things I want to see and do - I do this long before I get on the trail so that each day is a surprise and not something I just watched the n...

Camino del Norte Day 7: To Train or Not to Train?" THAT IS THE QUESTIONS - Bilbao - Castro Urdiales
Would Christ run to elbow people out of the way for a bed? 😢 How many times in scripture did Our Lord say, “Be not afraid” or “Do not worry”? I’ve walked two Caminos and never “booked ahead”. Even if you had to catch a taxi on to the next available bed, would our Saviour not accept your pilgrimage intentions or prayers? ✌️❤️🙏🇦🇺
well said - and how true - there is much to learn as a follower of Jesus and God uses the Camino to teach me so much. The battle between flesh and spirit is a daily fight
Also, I’ve done 2 Camino’s and I think it’s pretty universal to loath a loud snorer in the middle of an albergue. Sleep is vital on the Camino so as we say in America , love the sinner, hate the sin. 😂
great comment - thanks so much for watching the videos
Hello, thanks for your videos ! Apologies if you addressed in the video somewhere , but what were the dates of your Primitivo? I’m hoping to do the route in ‘25 and trying to figure out the best month , but thinking mid may. Thoughts ?
I did this walk in September - May would be great i think
What was the castle?
oh, not sure
I think the sopa del dia in Portugal is mostly vegetables. I ❤ the soup, especially on a rainy day. The fruit in Portugal was the best I've ever had. ❤
So good!
My longest day on the portuguese camino was about 24 km. I walked 8 days in total. Best toe socks, best altra trail runners. Fairly prepared re training. No blisters. My sister and I did get lost a few times along the litoral route. Next time we'll use the apps. We ❤❤❤❤ walking the camino!
I love walking it too - thanks so much for watching the videos - see you out there
We did the red route today 20/10/24 it was very windy and rained, but we loved it.
lets go
yes
those kids are having the time of there lives on the Camino del Norte
yep
Good to see kids enjoying themselves on the Camino😅
amen
Love it!!
Glad you like it!
Complaining about pilgrims snoring is very rude. Snoring isn’t intentional, and it’s difficult to control. You should have bought earplugs or paid for a private room. That kind of attitude isn’t in the spirit of a true pilgrim.
It was rude..... yet my honest feelings, but thank you for pointing it out and forgive me for my honesty ........ True pilgrims.......that is a question I remember the cast of "The Way" discussing, I think they talked about the need to suffer as a pilgrim. Anyway, you are just seeing a normal human being struggling with the reality of shared sleeping spaces - Snoring is a normal part of the experience if you stay with others, and yes, grace must be offered - hang on, that's what I said........ "I guess the pilgrim spirit is to forgive and give grace, and tonight, sleep will go on the American Express card!" - So I did what you asked of me to be a true pilgrim - And to all who might read this ...If you snore or don't snore, get on the Camino and grow, find faith and learn to forgive - God with give you to opportunities to show grace - sometimes you fail, as I have many times but keep walking and forgiving and searching.
The message of if you do not feel bad you should feel bad, was disappointing, but we all struggle at times. To be frank I get the frustration. Most snorers were apologizing all the time during my caminos (even if its part of life and a mass habitation), but there was a bloke who snored, smoked, drank wine aplenty then did not shower. I didnt sleep in the garden due to the snoring, but I do understand frustration for the lack of respect.
Are you $@?!& complaining cause some people snore????? buy some ear plugs or stay at the Ritz Carlton. First time a leaving a comment in RUclips … but you deserve it
after all your complaining!!
what a day in the mountains
Another great video, Rich! That Albergue in Lourenza is one of my favourites. Was that this year?
glad you enjoyed the video, my friend - filmed in 2023
I walked the Norte last year too. Great memories, and I'm determined to make time to do it again. Or maybe the Primitivo.
Do the Primitivo - by for the best Camino i have done - loved it so much
Thanks for the tip! My videos from the Norte are not as professional as yours, but you might enjoy them. Just search "Andy and Dave on the Camino del Norte 2023".
Just came back. There are vegetables. You just have to know what to order. Maybe do not order the Pilgrims menu ;)
that is a great tip - glad to hear you found the veggies, and thanks so much for watching
“I’m here for walking, not sleeping” ❤️
thanks so much for watching my little vlogs - have you done any Camino's or are you planning your first one at the moment?
I’ve done the Frances this year, but I had to cut it short at Cruz de Ferro, as my dad was ill. And in planning my Camino I watched a lot of videos, some of yours included. And now I have the Camino blues.
Yes I agree but iv been doing the comino for 11 years and I feel it's losing its soul its becoming too touristy albergues don't keep beds for pilgrims who walk with their hiking bags sad for pilgrims who want to walk the true pilgrims way sorry for my selfishness buen comino to all
thanks so much for watching - I am very much enjoying looking at the more remote paths to enjoy the soulful walks - but I also want to do the French way again at some stage
grumpy old man is not what i want to be
you are
love it
love it too
Thanks for mentioning Christ, most people marching this road are there for "fun". Yes this was the best albergue on the portuguese camino. Seems that you visited the near by church too but you missed eating cod at Sergio restaurant.....
I have just started this group on FB yesterday to bring the faith element to the front of the Camino facebook.com/groups/873357494427649
Completed the Norte this year, must say I never anticipated so much road walking 90%, was not a fan of this Camino.
wonderful on the eyes and terrible on the feet - which has been your fav so far - thanks for watching
@@TheGingerVicar-iu4mbWalked Via Podiensis (Le Puy) twice….far less road walking, food, scenery less people, easy to find accommodation, relaxed walking. Having said that just completed 88 Temple Pilgrimage in Shikoku, now that is amazing, just the culture and history of Japan, downside 90% road walking, I was inspired by Efron, just taking more of a spiritual path, it’s about the journey to each temple, no race or having to walk long distances…love seeing you walk with your family, that’s very special…🙏
Hello from Dublin Ireland. I'm flying into Biarritz tomorrow afternoon to start the Norte.)
you will have a great time - thanks so much for watching, and I hope my vlogs have been helpful in your preparation - have a wonderful time
I was so lucky to have stumbled across this albergue. It is a total gift and I agree the best I have stayed in during two Caminos.
What a place!! thanks for watching
Any tips for places that you would recommend for people to stay? Drop them here - I also noticed that the prices is clearly up - 15-25 euros per night for an Albergue is a lot
love this accommodation - it is just wonderful
I was !!
I hear you with the albergue snorers! Why go communal if they know they're going to snore the house down 😭. When did you walk it? I went in June and getting accommodation along the route was fairly easy with no one turned away.
I was walking in September - It was more of a battle of accommodation than the the norte which was also hard work - I think i just locked into a packed week
@@TheGingerVicar-iu4mb nothing like a bit of a bed race to put a spring in your step 😄 I walked past that albergue to stay in the 1000 year old monastery, it did look nice in your video tho
Not every pilgrim can afford hostels, private rooms or hotels. Nobody snores on purpose. When you’re not prepared for snorers, you’re not prepared on the Camino.
@@erikopdecamino3510 I agree with you in principle and I am passionate about the Camino being accessible to everyone, regardless of budget. But, I would say if you know you're a bad snorer you and cannot afford to get a private room then you need to at least try to help those around you - let people know you may snore, try not to drink too much alcohol before bed (this makes me snore) and possibly take some cheap ear plugs to hand out to people. All are welcome on Camino, but we also need to be mindful of others. Buen Camino
@@Caminohacks I agree that snorers (but nog only them :-) ) should take care with alcohol. The idea of handig outfit ear plugs seems undoable to me. One might need an extra backpack ;-) For those with a smartphone and Spotify: load a playlist with ‘white noise’ and sleep well. For me it works great.
Loving it!
thanks Mani - looking forward to hiking with you on the camino
great video dad!
Glad you enjoyed it - miss you son
Great video ! I walked the Norte/Primitivo this June and it's really nice to get a reminder of the route. Some long days and some spectacular views. The path over the Hospitales was especially good although the wind was so strong and gusty at the top that it was hard to stand upright at times - icy cold too. You're not using the HoverAir X for any drone video?
Glad you enjoyed it - for me also it was the best Camino I have done so far! Sadly I did not have the HoverAir at this time - I used it to film on the Camino Portuguese - which I am also editing at the moment - have you seen the new HoverAir Max?
@@TheGingerVicar-iu4mb I'm waiting for the hands-on reviews on the new ones after launch as the reviews so far were only done at the press conference (and I'd like to see a proper comparison between them and the DJI Neo). Just wanted to know if you actually found it usable on the caminos as I have a tendency to get excited about new tech and then not actually use it too much... I really like the idea of them (size, simple functionality, etc) but wondered if the noise level externally was too annoying. Would love to be able to get some simple drone shots with something as small and packable as that though.
For me the drone was great and I used it more than I thought I would. Yes, it has limits but I loved it for filming. the fact you can fold it really helps with size - the Neo looks good but not sure it will fit in my pocket
@@TheGingerVicar-iu4mb Good to know. Thanks.
I walked the Primitivo in 2022, I loved it, for me it's the best camino that I've done so far, epic.
it truly is the best Camino - thanks for watching
Do you think that this Camino is better than the others? what is your favourite route and why?
day 4 looks epic
it was
love the spiritual aspects of this adventure!
it's powerful to be alone with the creator
What an epic trip on the Camino Primitivo - looking forward to get back out on the trail
Who is this goofball?
sadly its just me !!
great production
thanks mate
loved this video dad
thanks mani
Cool...
glad you enjoyed the video
This is funny. Your hacks were mine exactly. Change your shoes halfway everyday equaled zero blisters for me 800 + km. Stay in hotels equaled no snoring, a great nights sleep and skipped the mass of early walkers. Make a beautiful salad from the supermarket everyday. Never got sick and felt better than I had in years.
very stoked that you enjoyed the video - I guess that after a Camino or 2, we all start to learn what works. When and where is your next Camino adventure?
Thanks once again, Rich, for another amazing video. I will probably stay there, just for the B & B!😊
great - you will love it
What is the best time of year to walk this trail?
What was your favourite beach as you walked the Camino del Norte?
What a beach!!
the best
Very fun! 😂 I did the Camino Frances to Finsterra in May! Great info and particularly your hotel hack which I did after the 1st 10 days of snoring, a cold that I didn’t want to give to others and having a hard time finding a bed! Also, are you using Bedrock Sandals. I have about 400k in those and they are great.
thanks so much for watching - I must try the Bedrocks - glad you are enjoying the videos - what is your next camino
Thanks Rich. We will walk it one day! For now, we will just watch your video!
Mate you guys would love it - I really enjoyed your European video - very cool
As usual, Rich, you nailed your explanation. What was your base weight?
I have no idea - I pack as light as I can and never find out how much it weighs. It's light
Rich, you're addictive!
Thats funny - 🤣
Heel pain after the rock walking!
oh yes that is true - I always find the last 5k is really painful on the old feet
