Scott Hill Photography | Birding on Whidbey Island. Canon R5, RF 200-800
A brief trip to Whidbey Island. The day went by too fast, or the daylight was too short? In this vlog, I meet up with my friend David to photograph shorebirds on Whidbey Island. Afterwards we quickly made our way out to see if the Short-eared Owls will come out. Hope you enjoy this video!

Scott Hill Photography | My First Vlog
Hello Scott 👋 I actually know this fun location you are at. We actually slept in Captain Whidbey’s inn museum near there. 😆 I love the variety of birds you captured this evening for me. It was a delight to soak in your amazing shots for the full 11.5 min. My favorite was that cool Black Oyster catcher. I love their bright red eye and beak. The slow shuttle technique worked out beautifully for you here with that crazy wind! Beautiful video friend! So very nice to have you show me so many amazing birds today. Loved the full time with you!
@@VRGetaway Thank you, glad you liked it! Stay tuned for more 😊
Awesome vlog!
@@Amaesphotography Thank you very much! 🙏🙏
Nice video, thanks for sharing. I am concerned about the Short eared owls. The fields are so flooded I doubt the voles are there, so if the food source isn't there the owls will have to go somewhere else. I saw one Short-Eared Owl on Saturday but it was further away than I cared to photograph. My mother in-law lives near Oak Harbor so I go to Whidbey Island a lot. For Harlequin ducks I like to use the Rosario Beach entrance. They like the rocks off the point there and are there most of the time.
@@jeffolson4731 Thank you! Yes the short eared owl action has slowed down due to flooding. The harlequin ducks…Rosario beach, good to know!
Beautiful and thank you for sharing. ❤❤
@@JonnyPink65 Thank you! 🙏
@@scotthillphotography Keep sharing please. I am visiting vicariously through your videos. Debating on going in a couple of weeks, but if not, I will defiantly be there in mid December of 2025 - eagles and owls - even one and I am happy!! 🤗
Hey Scott, thank you for sharing your great encounters with some awesome birds of prey! I am thinking about visiting the Skagit County in mid July and was wondering if there also is a chance to spot short-eared owls or if you have other recommodations for birding at this time of the year? Greetings from Alex (Germany)
Glad you liked it! The shorties will be gone by July. You should go for shorebirds because of the low tides at that time of the year. Visit beaches, the islands such as Camano Island and Whidbey Island. I don't recommend going when the tide is at its lowest, unless you're willing to walk really far out. Good luck!
@@scotthillphotography Thank you for your advice! :)
just found your page and was also down there last week. I live over here so reach out if you ever need to come this way again.

a great video about wildlife, my country wildlife is great too!
@@LamJiang Thank you! 😊
Awesome shots and footage. Never been to the Samish Flats but if I was to go, do you just drive around and look for birds in flight? It’s a 3 hour drive for me so I wouldn’t want to just drive there aimlessly. Any tips would be much appreciated!
@@davidroberts5535 Yes, drive around and look for birds of prey. Pulling over often, take out binoculars and look around. The best months to go is November, December, January, and February. Also look for other people pulled over looking at birds and that may lead you to something. I prefer to arrive there at dawn or hang around late afternoon to dusk to see the owls. Good luck!
@@scotthillphotographyappreciate it. Might have to make it an overnight trip. Funny story…I’ve always wanted to photograph owls and the very last place I thought I’d see one and get a photograph was during my family trip to Kauai. We were driving back from a hike in the evening and I happened to see what I thought was an owl. I pulled over and got a few blurry images of it and after zooming in on my lcd, I realized that indeed it was an owl. I believe it was a short ear owl. Thanks again.
Stunning footage, really enjoyed this. Thank you for sharing.
@@deniscameron3792 Thank you. Glad you liked it!
I’m glad to see they are back. I used to go to Camino Island and shoot them there and got some excellent photographs. I was afraid after they allowed flooding of the fields where the short haired owls would go
I will have to check out camano island! Yup, flooding does get in the way of their hunting. Hopefully we will be ok this season!
Great location looks like fun!
@@GabePerlPhotography It’s a great location for sure!!
Scott!!! Oh man, I know right where you are - I was there in March and it blew my mind. I was not going to drive out there this year but ....... I have a little time in December just before Christmas so I may - you have changed my mind. I did a video from that same place. Oh man, thank you for sharing this - simply an amazing place and you are fortunate to have it closer to you than it is to me. Thank you, thank you. 🙏🤗💖
@@JonnyPink65 Thank you, glad you liked it! I don’t recommend going in March. December, January, and February are the best months to go!
@@scotthillphotography Oh no, I had gone in January of this year just as the worst snow storm in 30 years was coming in. I drove back after only shooting one afternoon at Juanita Bay park. I went BACK in March as that was as soon as I could. If I dont make it later this month, I will plan for December of 2025. Big trip in April to Arizona to shoot hummingbirds, then again end of July so dedicating my cash flow more towards that. Really gonna try to swing later this month though. 🤗
Absolutely GREAT footage!! Thanks for taking us along on this adventure. Looking forward to the next one!!

Scott, I just came across your channel and am enjoying your pics and videos. I’m pretty new at photography, my wife is the expert. Yup! I’ve seen them in trees a few times. They can blend in so well

Absolutely AMAZING. You are so fortunate to have eagles there. We have a few here in California but they are few and far between. Planning on going to Washington in late January to get some eagles.... and owls. Beautiful area there and thank you thank you for sharing.!! 🙏🤗💖
I want to explore the wildlife in California, but yeah. WA has a little bit of everything it seems like. Glad you liked the video!
@@scotthillphotography If you do make it out this way, let me know - would love to shoot together. Lovely images, only I was perplexed by the way you indicated your subject on your GoPro footage which has something like 130deg fov, making your subject seem further away than it actually was.

@@EmmasNatureEscapes Thank you for your support and glad you liked the video!
Good style, incorporating music and narration/story telling. At some small points it was like songs volume ( amplitude) was higher while your narration audio levels were lower which needed to change our device volume up and down. This could be resolved by normalising audio. (usually one more step in editing in my case davinci resolve or audacity both has audio normalising feature) . That would just make it more audible without needing to change device volumes. Disclaimer : I was watching on speakers not headphones. Anyways great choice of music. Wish you good luck!!!
@@youtubeneedsfix Yeah I need to get a microphone for my GoPro when I talk to help me with that. Glad you liked the video though!
@@scotthillphotography microphone will definitely provide better quality BUT it will still be needing to have same audio levels throughout multiple clips you record over multiple medium be is go pro camera etc etc. I hope you understand my original comment is not about quality. In fact I did not notice you were using go pro audio unless you said so. The point is having different level of volume at different clips. So new microphone might not help with that part.
Legends know about bonus footage. XD patience pays.
Definitely wanting to visit that refuge someday. The one time we were going past and thought about stopping, it was so foggy/misty that we didn't bother. Perhaps on another trip.
It's worth checking out! May is my favorite month to visit there.
Solid video. Liked the video speed and subject/background separation.

Thank you very much!
Some really nice stuff there, man! I'm envious too; I've been waiting, and waiting, and waiting, and waiting some more, for Canon to produce more of these lenses. I plan to pair it with my R6 Mk II. Like a lot of people have commented on RUclips and various forums, the main gripe is, would it really be a hardship for Canon to let us know when they will actually be available? I've made requests to B&H and other vendors for a stock alert, but it's been months and no information yet. So, I'm really glad for you that you've got one, and I hope to have mine at some point sooner than later. Cheers!
Thank you! Yeah it was a bit frustrating not knowing when I was going to receive this lens. It took 6 months for me to get it after pre ordering in November. I assume by the end of the year or beginning of next year the Canon RF 200-800 will actually be in stock after all the pre orders are done.
I have a hard enough time telling a Greater or Lesser drake Scaup, I’ve given up on the hens.
Haha right! I find it a lot more easier to tell the difference with the females. I still have to go online and research either way
Hi Scott, great job on the vlog! Remember those gloves man!
