    Honestly proper training and mentorship is so important on that first real world job! Really builds a great foundation to build your skills on until you switch. It took me around 2.5 years to really start chasing the paycheck. While I sometimes look back to the wasted income potential I had in those 2 years because I chose the lower income job, I compensate by being aggressive with compensation negotiations so I get paid my worth. There are those who are lucky to get the best of both worlds (great mentorship + great salary), but we all have to start somewhere.

    • @sandradoingstuff
      @sandradoingstuff 22 дня назад

      I have a longer video fully explaining it- but I live with my partner. He owns his home and we agreed that I would aggressively pay my student loans and contribute the 975 to shared expenses! I live in a similar cost of living area and feel very fortunate, but I’ve always been pretty savvy with money so if I wasn’t in this situation I would for sure be living with 3+ roommates to keep rent as low as possible until I’m debt free!

I did also have the most basic iPad and Apple Pencil, it was helpful for notes, but not necessary. Don’t buy textbooks- unless you’re a few weeks into a semester and find you actually need them, even then, I rented. Textbooks are too dense, and become outdated quickly. I never used mine as a resource. Huge money saver!

    Hi! How did you learn so much about personal finance?

    • @sandradoingstuff
      @sandradoingstuff 28 дней назад

      I was fortunate to have parents that were very proactive about their personal finances, and taught us to save more than we spent from a young age. As I got older I learned about more niche topics like financial freedom/ retiring early and traveling using miles and points from social media, and that was kind of the trigger for me to learn more about how to leverage my money, debt, spending, and investing. I honestly consider personal finance to be one of my hobbies. I've spent a lot of time in the space from books, podcasts, and reddit forums learning a lot, I just find it reaalllly interesting. Hoping to share a lot of that culminated knowledge on this channel, and put it to the test by sharing my personal finance journey!

    Thank you for this video, I am currently in between clinical psychology and OT school. I currently work with children with special needs in an elementary school so this is what helped me realize that I wanted to pursue such a thing. I don't have the best GPA though, a 3.3. I graduated with my associate's degree in high school with a 3.0 but I was able to raise it in University to a 3.3. I still need two classes, Anatomy and Physiology and Principles of Occupational Therapy even though I just graduated with my Psychology degree. I think If I can pull off two A's in these classes I can at least get it to a 3.4. But I still do not think it is enough. I just feel so hopeless. I have ADHD and had severe depression throughout high school and college so I was always procrastinating. I feel like I am in a better place and I really want this. I wish I had never done my associate's degree in high school as I was not mature enough to endure such classes but it was forced on almost everyone because it is an Early College High school. I would love to hear your opinion on this. I would love to work with children only.

    • @sandradoingstuff
      @sandradoingstuff Месяц назад

      Most OT school applications provide the opportunity to explain your GPA if you need to- but a 3.3 or 3.4 arent going to get your application immediately thrown in the trash. Recognizing that you didn't have the emotional maturity to handle college level courses as a high school student shows really good maturity now. I would use the opportunity on your application to explain what you learned, and how that learning will help you succeed in the rigor of an OT program. It's important to address both what went wrong and how you fixed it to be able to handle challenges in the future. I would cast your net a little wider than just one or two schools, and let your passion show in your application!

    • @sandradoingstuff
      @sandradoingstuff 2 месяца назад

      Thank you! I don’t think I’ve talked about it fully- and I think PSLF is an awesome option for most people, but it doesn’t align with my career or financial goals so I’m going to be choosing to aggressively pay my loans so that I pay them off in 5 years or less. This is a very privileged option because I am in a position where I can afford to make huge payments towards my loans, but being debt free and having flexibility in work are my priorities. I’ll explain as best as I can in a video where I break down my plan- but that will be my route (and it’s been the plan since before I took my first loan)!

I was in the cadaver lab today for the first time and didn’t realize how sensitive I was to all of it and I’m extremely nervous for going to lab for the rest of the semester. Do you have any tips for squeamish/sensitive people in lab?

    • @sandradoingstuff
      @sandradoingstuff 2 месяца назад

      That was me 🙋🏽‍♀️We were fortunate enough to be still wearing masks during our cadaver semester which helped A LOT. I would put a little vaporub under my nose which helped with the smell. I also let more eager members of my group handle the cutting (I found that after the skin was open I was able to get a little more involved). I also made an effort to only focus on the area we were working on- if I thought of it as a body I was done for, but if it was just the extensors of the hand I could learn more. And lastly- it was helpful for me to remember that the people that donated their bodies wanted us to learn from them!

    • @sandradoingstuff
      @sandradoingstuff 2 месяца назад

      For me it was less! (still makes me want to throw up) But going into grad school I had decided to only take loans for tuition, and work to live- so my costs were easier to anticipate because my cost of tuition was mostly predictable (I have a piece or two to say about how schools charge tuition but that's a story for another time). I ended up paying more out of pocket for tuition because I have lived frugally, and got a small amount of additional scholarships- I was anticipating over 130,000 in principle, and came in at 122,000 give or take. I do plan to explain how I budgeted for school, decided what to take loans for, and share my whole process as the start of my journey of paying off my loans too- so there will be a full video about all of that!

    What exactly is a “capstone” project and what should I expect from it?

    • @sandradoingstuff
      @sandradoingstuff 2 месяца назад

      Generally speaking a capstone project is a culminating project where you demonstrate your mastery in an area. For OT schools, it’s a 14 week experience where you dive into a niche and work in professional development, program development, improving an area of OT, or research. You write your own learning objectives (with approval from an academic advisor) and work to meet them over the 14 weeks! This is currently only for doctorates in OT.
