The Happy Wanderer
Канада
Добавлен 23 сен 2010
I live on Vancouver Island and can't sit still. I love being outdoors exploring backcountry trails, camping in quiet places, fishing in rivers and lakes, and travelling to foreign countries. A journalist since 2003, my early years were spent covering court and crime for various newspapers in Western Canada including the Regina Leader-Post and the Edmonton Sun. I now specialize in freelance travel writing and photography, with stories appearing in several newspapers and magazines including Outpost Magazine, the Globe and Mail, Vancouver Sun, Our Canada, BC Outdoors and Sidetracked Magazine.
I am new to videography, so bear with me as I learn new skills. My goal is to inspire people to travel to places that are off the beaten path and try new experiences.

Japan: The beaches, onsen and unique rocks of Shirahama
After spending 10 days on a tour going to remote corners of Honshu Island, I wanted to spend my last few days in Japan somewhere relaxing. That is how I ended up in Shirahama, Wakayama. Located about 2.5 hours by train from Osaka, Shirahama is famous for its beautiful white sand beach. It is also known for onsen, which are natural hot springs sprinkled throughout the town. Shirhama onsen are actually one of the three oldest hot springs in Japan!
I came to Shirahama in the middle of November, which isn't really the time of year to be sun tanning or swimming in the ocean. But in addition to the wonderful onsen, there were still plenty of beautiful places to explore and enjoy some quality tim...

Japan: Off the beaten path on Honshu Island (Nagano, Hagi and Tottori)
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.21 день назад
Japan is a country I've dreamed of exploring for several years due to the rich culture and delicious food (I'm addicted to sushi and noodles). But I wanted to get off the beaten path and experience lesser known places that aren't crawling with tourists. That's how my mother and I ended up on the G Adventures Backroads of Japan tour, which begins in Tokyo and ends in Kyoto, but also includes Nag...
Tokyo: Two days exploring the world's largest city
Просмотров 843Месяц назад
I never thought I'd be in one of the world's busiest pedestrian crossings with my mother. But somehow I managed to convince her that exploring Japan would be a wonderful idea, and of course the trip had to start in Tokyo - the world's largest city. I really wish I had more than two days in Tokyo since there's a lot to explore in a city with 37 million people, but at least I got a taste (literal...
Peru: Hiking up a big sand dune at a desert oasis
Просмотров 523Месяц назад
Located four hours south of Lima, the village of Huacachina is built around a small oasis surrounded by the largest sand dunes in South America. I love sand dunes, so of course I had to come here and see what it's like. There isn't much to see or do in Huacachina unless you like to party or play in the sand, but it's part of many tours that go to the resort town of Paracas. This is how I ended ...
Peru: Six days on a riverboat in the Amazon rainforest
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.2 месяца назад
Experiencing a world that's completely different than my own is the reason I travel. Seeing exotic wildlife and how people live in the Amazon rainforest is what prompted my father and I to travel from Victoria to Peru and spend six days on a riverboat exploring Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Covering more than two million hectares, the reserve is among the largest protected areas in Peru, whi...

Well, it's time for something completely different. My dad is a professional musician and I am lucky to have some of his musical talent. When I'm wandering around outside, I often have little songs pop into my head, but they could use some help from a professional musician to morph into a complete song. The chorus of this silly tune popped into my head when I was camping by myself on Saturna Is...
Vancouver Island: Paddling the Sayward Canoe Route
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.3 месяца назад
A multi-day canoe trip has never been on my adventure list. I've been in a canoe a couple of times and my partner, Mirko has never been in a canoe. But after reading a few books about epic expeditions through remote parts of northern Canada, I was interested in trying a new adventure - and experiencing what it's like to portage. Located east of Campbell River in the heart of the Sayward Forest,...
Vancouver Island: Three glorious days on Phillips Ridge
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.3 месяца назад
My long weekends during the summer are often dedicated to backcountry adventures in Strathcona Park. This time, Phillips Ridge was next on the list of backcountry hikes to explore. The plan was to spend two nights at either Arnica Lake or somewhere on Phillips Ridge so we could wake up to gorgeous mountain views and hike to the summit on day two. What's it like hiking on Phillips Ridge? Watch a...
Fishing with Pamela Ep. 9: Catching chinooks in B.C.'s Nitinat River - with NEW drone footage!
Просмотров 9 тыс.3 месяца назад
Located in a wild and remote part of Vancouver Island, the Nitinat River is known for its productive salmon runs that can range up to 500,000 salmon each year. It's also known for sneaky black bears patiently waiting for an opportunity to steal someone's fish. On this trip, the river wasn't exactly packed with salmon, but we did manage to find more fish than last year. This meant I finally got ...
Vancouver Island: Facing my fear on Mount Tom Taylor
Просмотров 9334 месяца назад
I love being in the mountains, but I'm not a fan of heights. On a wide open ridge, I'm a happy hiker. On a narrow mountain summit, I can turn into a big baby. It's hard to control the fear that's waiting to erupt the moment I get too close to the edge of a cliff. The more hiking I do in Strathcona Park, the more I learn about my limits when it comes to getting through steep, exposed sections th...
Fishing with Pamela Ep. 8: Success! Catching pinks on a fly in the Campbell River
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.4 месяца назад
The Campbell River is my favourite place for fly fishing. It's where I learned how to use my new fancy fly rod and it's where I caught my first pink salmon all by myself. But this time, I was feeling nervous about fishing in the Campbell River since I failed to catch even one salmon last year. Fortunately, it didn't take long to break the curse. So what changed this time? Watch and find out!

Canadian Rockies: Four days hiking Jasper's Skyline Trail

There's something freeing about putting on a backpack that has everything you need to survive and walking into the wilderness. Especially when that wilderness is the Rocky Mountains in Jasper National Park. I was lucky to reserve three nights along the Skyline Trail - the most popular backcountry hike in Jasper. About 25 km is above the tree line making it one of the most scenic hikes in the Ro...

I'm so excited I'm doing this in a few weeks
Yes, you should be excited! I'm sure it will be a great adventure.
This was very helpful! My wife and I moved to the Victoria area last summer, so we are still getting to know the area and seeking nature-related hikes and beach walks. So thank you for this; well done!
You need to learn how to use a spinning rod. Don't reel and reel when under pressure from the salmon or you spin twist the line that will cause the line twist on the rod tip and down to the reel becoming a problem until to pull all the line off the reel and put swivels in the line where you hook the line to something and reel the line back on the reel holding the line between your fingers ahead of the reel causing the line to spin against the swivel. You need to pull up and reel on the down stroke and of you want the salmon to go right lay the rod to the right and pull with the rod to the side and if you want the salmon to go left again lay the rod over and pull to the left, Salmon & Steelhead are easy steered where you want them to go . Holding the rod up as you did the salmon wants to fight against that because you are pulling the fish up and they don't like that, so they fight harder, and it cause so many fish to be lost pulling the hook out. I am now 65 years old with my fishing & Hunting guide services started in the Pacific NW in 1978 and I worked in Alaska for from 1989 to coming of covid that wrecked all my tourism services.
Thanks for your advice! I will consider it next time I hook a giant salmon.
try out お雑煮 "mochi meal in a happy new year" in many places in Japan. It would be so nice and deferent taste in each place.
This is a very nice video! Thank you very much! I was wondering where I should go for my third Japan trip and this helped a lot!
That's great! Where are you going to go for your third trip?
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I love seeing your infectious smile no matter where you are. Tokyo is indeed a fun city to visit.
hello
Where was Dad on this trip? No guitar on the top of the sand dunes. The Ballestas look little changed from 2005 when we visited. The only advice we received before getting on the boat was to always wear a hat..not to protect from the sun but to ward off the bird poop which falls as rain from the blue sky. Truly an underappreciated spot.
Lol. Dad was too busy chasing birds fluttering around in the oasis to hike up a sand dune. He was also busy taking photos of the wildlife at the Ballestas. It's cool you went there too! Hope you didn't get any bird poo on your hat.
Awe so good Pammy. I'm so happy you are living your best life!! ❤️❤️❤️
Nice.. thanks for uploading and showing us the Amazon rainforest
I knew about that route for years but didn't realize the portage trails were so well maintained. I pictured much more bushwhacking.
Mantap
Sea kayaking in this beautiful area is such a treat. Thanks for sharing and greetings from Germany.
I understand that crimped barbs are better than barbless hooks generally in fishing. Barbless hooks are easier to remove, but they tear more than a barbed hook in the fight, whereas of course the barbed hook is harder to remove. A crimped barb won't tear the mouth and is easier to remove.
It sounds like a battle of strength between whoever tires first. Intrigued by the small bear we saw. Don't bears have priority and anglers should give way or is that just a rule in certain states of the US? I wouldn't be inclined to throw stones at one, they might have a few big brothers or parents that might take a decidedly poor view of that. You guys have probably just eaten a full English breakfast whereas they have to work a bit harder for a meal. Excellent video, Keep them coming.
Lol!!!! 😅
Pathetic amateurs....try to get tHem in the mouth next time LMAO and DO NOT POST LOCATIONS AND RIVER NAMES
I'm moving to Vancouver Island next month, I've been visiting often the past couple years and am excited to call it home. Can't wait to explore more hiking trails and beaches here. So far my favorite beach there has been Sombrio Beach. Love the hidden waterfall and definitely plan to camp there sometime. I really want to check out San Josef Bay and more of the beaches in the Pacific Rim area. Thanks for the ideas in this video!
Politely if you want to catch and release, do the videos for other well known systems. Smaller systems please don't publicize, else heaps of crowds starts coming.
They’re sure harder to reel in when they’re not mouthhooked….
Yep. It sucks hooking them, but it's hard to avoid that when there's so many of them stacked together in a pool.
@@pamelasroth Indeed!
@@pamelasroththat’s why you don’t fish stagnant pools with stacked fish? Give your fucking head a shake. This and posting the system name? Must be from the mainland. Make like one and fuck off.
Then if there are so many why can’t you legal catch in the mouth? Not good enough? Hahah I would not be posting snagging fish and getting clout hahah get bent rook
Rook snagging
What a fun hike, that's the kind of trails we have done so many of . We are now aged out, I think, cause at 84 we really had to scale down lol.. we started finding back country trails and travelling at age 50....loved it, all I could do was take pictures no access to the videos of today. So I shall follow you in.
Thank you for taking the time to get out there a create such quality content of our beautiful Island. You are quite a trooper for facing your fear of heights. I love the bait at 9:06. One of my horrible addictions too ! ( at least they are made in Canada 🍁 🍁 ! )
Amazingly beautiful!
I am much confused. I thought pinks only ran on odd years? Just moved to the Island so don’t know what’s what yet…when was this footage taken?
I've only started fishing in the Campbell River three years ago, but it seems the pinks are always there, due to the hatchery. Some years there are more pinks, but there always seems to be plenty around. This footage was taken a few weeks ago in August.
Great little video of your trip; what kind of camera set up do you have?
Hi! I use a GoPro Hero 11. Got it about a year ago and it's wonderful for outdoor adventures. Thanks for watching.
Hello Pamela and Merko(?), sorry if I got your name wrong. Well done for getting so high and overcoming the vertigo, thanks for showing the stunning scenery in Strathcona park- fantastic views, I visited Vancouver island (and Strathcona) back in 2005, didn't get that high but what a beautiful island, once seen never forgotten. I went to Uclulet and Tofino, Port hardy, Nootka, Telegraph cove, Port Alice and Campbell river among many other places, trip of a lifetime!!. Cheers Peter(UK). Enjoy every moment you have there.
@@peterlocke5204 Yes, it certainly is a beautiful place we live. I'm glad you got to experience some of it as well. Thanks for watching :)
Nice to see the ancient forest, thx.

Me and my wife we love fishing together 😂❤❤
Great video, subscribed! My wife and I are moving to N.Saanich next May and will be sure to check out these amazing spots.
very nice video, I am learning do RUclips now
the secret steeleheading spot is Best NOV to FEB...... Switch up to rubber egg beads on your float or blu fox spinner the blu one 😁✌️
I live on my sailboat on the island. I moved here from Alberta 6 years ago and I still can't believe I live here. I like camping too and finding new trails.
I was born and raised in Nanaimo and lived there all my life, . but a 4 years ago I moved to the Cariboo region of BC. I hunted fished and camped the island for 60 years, and camped all over, but the last 20 years mainly north end past Sayward and around Vernon lake. there will be tons of places for you to explore, but prepare to get rained on a lot especially up island. That is one reason I moved away. I will have to be checking back to see where you are traveling that I have gone to. Enjoy the island .... Mike
Hello, greetings from Phuket Island, i wish you all the best
Really enjoyed seeing the scenery of these hikes. The green shiny ferns were stunning along the creek.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the info, next time I’m over I’ll check them out
Very nice video but I’m pretty sure my old legs would be feeling dead rather than “alive” climbing up some of those.😊
Thank you for taking us along with you!
Any time!
wow the Canadian rockies are something else!
