I've been grappling with to use or not to use "B" ; if you are here and reading this you have probably researched this topic till your blue in the face. This video is compelling and well done and I was inclined to keep "B' in for the ONLY reason as not having oil drain back down for that split half second on startup. Makes sense after all, the oil would be doing 90 degree turns unless the valve at "B" opened at the 10 PSI which under almost all circumstances the condition is met (since idling oil pressure is usually 15-30 PSI) , on the builds such as mine that are NOT utilizing the "C" and "D' ports (external oil cooler) as they are "plugged". OK... So what's the revelation ? Why am I writing this ? What you are about to read is especially for the people like me that are concerned about oil drain back into the sump from the higher elevated lifter passages and gallies; thus leaving these unfilled over time... In all my research that I have done, Nobody (that I know) has mentioned what I just ran into today while comparing oil filters. I'll start it this way; ever since I began my gearhead/ grease monkey journey through life in the mid 70's one of the most read "must do's" that I always followed was a simple one " Use a PF-35 instead of a PF-25 " due to more capacity thus more volume handling capability " Since I have about 5 PF-35's laying on a shelf, I began to wonder why they couldn't be used on the GEN 6 454 (weren't coming up on the part lookups) even though they have been out of production and superseded. The PF-1218 seems to be the filter of preference for the Gen 6 454, O.K. so what ? I did a simple google search on: PF-35 vs. PF-1218 ... Wow ! even before this video that I am going to post, I was reading: The PF-1218 has a built in check valve that prevents the return of oil... WOW.. I'll repeat it again ... WOW... A revelation to me, others that know this already may say that I'm thinking that I discovered water, but NO, I never have seen a filter with a check valve.. Furthermore, NOW I CAN RUN THE MOTOR WITHOUT "B" without second thoughts or hesitation. As to why this isn't plastered all over the place leaves me perplexed. If you look up the PF-1218 on SUMMIT or other spec sheets it clearly reads: " Anti-Drain back valve" : " YES"... To me the "B" decision (due to drain back vs. lubrication pressure and capacity) was critical as I am sure it is to many of you out there, including Lukas Garrison as it probably exactly why he went to all the trouble of examining all the passages and making a video. Upon learning about the PF-1218's Anti-Drain Back, I am keeping "B" out and doing what Lukas explained with "A" "Running the 30 pound valve which will force more oil through the filter" thus cycling more filtered oil. I hope this helps anyone that is stuck in a "should I" or "should I not" RUT. (like I was) Here's the Video link: ruclips.net/video/8q_hBjBP1Dk/видео.html

What you dont understand is the filters have a bypass in them take a long screwdriver stick it down in one and push really hard and you will feel it give, besides at about 20 to 30 lb the stock bypass passes unfiltered oil Back into the engine, No Good,

Hi Lukas, I stumbled on to this video and thought I should add my two cents. Both of these valves are pressure differential valves. Meaning, they remain closed until the pressure difference is greater on one side of the valve as opposed to the other. You must remember that there is oil pressure on both sides of the pressure differential valve. The sole purpose of these valves is to prevent oil starvation should the oil filter and or the oil cooler become restricted. If the pressure on the side opposite the spring exceeds the pressure on the spring side by more than the spring pressure setting the plate will open allowing oil to bypass either the oil filter or the cooler insuring oil supply all be it unfiltered or uncooled oil to continue to flow through the engine.

Thanks for answering my question on the cam button and the retainer plate. My question is the timing chain set. With an OE Step-Nose cam, I have seen some after market double-roller sets have a Torrington bearing or thrust washer on the cam gear that rolls on the thrust plate between the cam gear. GM uses a single roller chain with no bearing or thrust plate and no buttons needed, just a plate on the 502. What did you use for timing components? Thanks in advance?

Hi Lukas. I am building a Mark IV / Gen VI 454. I want to include an oil cooler. I heard you say that originally the engines came with 10lb bypass valves in both "A" & "B", but then I heard you say that if you were to run a cooler, you would change them both to 30lb bypass valves. I just want to confirm with you that this is what you would do if it were you. I want to do what you would do. Thanks, Brett....

Hello Lukas, hope all is well. I’ve gone through all the steps and now my Holley starts up and does not die immediately. When I’m in park the IAC now stays at 20%, driving around town it’s fluctuates but usually is at 9%. My question is after you have adjusted the throttle you don’t physically show the steps. So I was a little confused as to when I remove the tape. Do I cycle the engine off and then remove? Or am I supposed to blip the accelerator a few times wait for it to come back up to idle RPM and then remove tape with vehicle on? I believe I missed a step somewhere because the IAC is supposed to be at 0%, if I’m not mistaken. BTW my truck runs good so I’m hesitant to mess with it. Thanks.
