    Allow me to give you an example. My hybrid battery worked 7 years in Japan. And still held 90% of it's capacity. If true, car made 156K km. I used it for less than two years, plus year car was on hold. No one used it. I made 130K km in two years. Could have made more. But it's pointless. Battery is dead. New battery with same capacity, probably will last for another 100K or year and a half. Get what you want from it.

    Empirical evidence is that I can go out and see 15. 20, 25 year old ICE cars on the road, but I don't see any 15, 20, 25 year old EVs. Cars fail MoTs and get scrapped for various reasons un-related to the type of engine. If this report is based only on MoT test results, it takes no account of what owners have had to spend to keep their cars on the road. Take the example of Hertz, they found that the cost of EV repairs and the income lost due to them being off the road made them uneconomic.

    I have a 2016 30kwh leaf , these are renowned for poor battery management and earlier models poor battery chemistry. I am lucky that mine still has full 12 battery bar's and battery health is around 87.5% . Even most of the poir chemistry leafs in the uk are still on the road but with reduced miles , but still good for the school run, shopping, short commute etc . Mine shows around 110 miles of range this time of year and around 123 in summer. Its been a great local car and just let down when doing long distance trips ( done a few 300+ trips ) where battery overheating can be an issue aa well as now the availability of Chademo connectors. This year saddly I will be saying goodbye to it, had 41 years of driving and my leaf has been by far the most reliable car I've owned, even considering its old poir outdated battery technology. Next car? Another Ev with 300 miles of range and better battery tech and chances are it could well be my last ever car .

    The Nissan Leaf was first sold in 2010. The Tesla Roadster was first sold in 2008 (USA sales). So I'm curious about which older EVs this survey refers to. Or do they just extrapolate 18 years based on retention / loss rates ? Leaf batteries suffer degradation due to excess heat if fast charged regularly. I think Nissan failed badly when they face lifted the leaf and failed to add liquid cooling. And now Nissan is skint. I note Toyota's BZ4X does not have liquid cooling in it's battery. Really stupid not to learn from the Leaf's failings. By comparison the liquid cooled Tesla batteries do have impressive longetivity.

    • @grouchthatbarx
      @grouchthatbarx 9 часов назад

      Extrapolate is the correct word, but there are EVs close to that age. Also the study states less problems from newer EVs as battery management and cooling are much better. The newest EV batteries will no doubt start outlasting the car.

  • @Neojhun

    FYI Rav4 EV from Y2K era with only Nickel Metal Hydride battery. Seems to survive to about 17 years. When the battery is too degraded it has problems output a safe amount of peak power reliably. • @grouchthatbarx
      @grouchthatbarx 9 часов назад

      It's the expected age extrapolated from data. There are EVs coming close to that age if you dig deep enough. So are you saying you do not expect the average scrappage age of EVs to be 18.4 years?

    • @andrewjoy7044
      @andrewjoy7044 8 часов назад

      @ I expect the scrappage age to eventually be closer to 30 years than 20. With ICE, vehicles are scrapped because the main components, motor and transmission are too expensive to fix. In EVs batteries can last along time but with less range and the motors can also last a long time.

    • @GeoGeo451
      @GeoGeo451 8 часов назад

      @grouchthatbarx I expect Evs batterys to last a long time, but I would not expect the rest of the car to last any longer than an ice car. And I think making claims like this gives anti ev people easy amo to argue with. I'm extremely pro EV, but I can instantly see flaws in your argument. Let's try and keep the facts straight as that gives us the factual high ground rather than resorting to predictions that can't be proven yet.

    Sorry, did I miss whether they are considering an EV to have come to the end of its lifespan if the battery has less than 80% capacity, or some other arbitrary figure? I can't imagine them saying that as long as an EV has 10% left it's still viable. However, if you've got one who's battery has 70% of it's original capacity, you're probably just going to keep using it as if nothing has changed. That's not an 'end of life' situation, unlike an Engine blowing a gasket.

    I keep reading vomits on farcebook saying "Well my car has lasted me 25-30 years, and I hope my next ICE car will too." I was reading vomits like that right before watching this video. These people saying "my car has lasted 20+ years" are either straight up lying, or they are the one-in-a-hundred-thousand that has kept such a car running at stupid expense because they love it and don't want to let it go. When I bought my first car 29 years ago, it was a choice between a Vauxhall Corsa - the old rounded-bum shape, 3-cylinder 970cc one, or a Citroen Saxo. The Citroen Saxo was the in-fashion car at the time for the young kids. So tell me, when did you last see a Citroen Saxo? I don't remember seeing those since at least a decade ago. When did you last see one of the original shape Vauxhall Corsa? I've seen one in the last ten years, and it was up on bricks being stripped for spares. Cars just don't last 20+ years in a damp climate. Maybe in Arizona or Texas - sure, in a hot dry climate you might keep steel from rusting and keep repainting old cars. But anywhere like northern US states or UK the cars just don't last that long. The panels rust to nothing. The salt destroys wheel arches and suspension components. Any car becomes a money pit after 20 years. If my rusting falling apart car has a petrol engine or a battery will make not a jot of difference when it is 20 years old and all the other components are done for.

      Another potential is they reside in countries where a lower quality of vehicles on the road is accepted and don't have regulatory annual inspections to ensure a minimal level of maintenance and safety of a vehicle to be allowed on the road. Those countries with regular inspection and safety standards tend to scrap cars much earlier than those that don't have such care for their population.

    Grouch, did you see the other article on the price gap between ICE and BEV's shrinking significantly that came out at the same time as the 18.4 year one (both top line articles on evpowered). In summary, analyst JATO Dynamics has reported the gap has closed worldwide and specifically regarding the UK the price gap between BEVs and ICE has gone from 51% higher for BEVs, five years ago, to 18% higher in 2024, which means for a £30k ICE car the EV price difference has shrunk from £45.3k to £35.4k well within the equivalent price point due to lower EV running costs and better finance deals available. The cause of the reducing in pricing gap, is not just down the lower EV costs (mainly from battery price reduction and production line scaling) but also from ICE cars becoming more expensive (as production capacity falls, and shifts to EVs, plus component and external cost increases). These reductions also don't reflect the recent crop of more affordable EVs that came onto the market and will continue to do so over the course of 2025, which could mean that EVs may rapidly shoot past the ICE price parity point to being cheaper overall in a fairly short period.

    Over recent years cars have got better, the same applies to EV's. So yes modern ICE cars have almost reached their top level they can reach and all thoughts are now on the EV's, so we will continue to see them improve. Batteries are much better and safer already. LFP can be used to 100% all the time and does not burn if punctured. This completely squashes many arguments against them. Remember that ICE cars have a rattle as the engine is running that will stress various parts of the body work and add the engine services, brake wear so far more things need to be replaced. As for our batteries, when they run out for car use, that may need up to 50-60kWh in an instant, a home with maximum draw of just 5kWh is perfect. it is not a problem if the capacity has fallen as it will still work, maybe instead of 15kWh it would be 12kWh. Still plenty for that job or add 2 to power the home or even the grid!

I suspect once the 2024 used car stats are out, normally sometime in Feb, they will show a dramatic uptake mainly due to the drepreciation bargins. On the plus side this is likely a one off transitional spike, one that will start to bring down the new car prices as they've been priced for the expected depreciation loss not the the initial higher technology cost. Hopefully the pricing level stablises with new BEVs becoming cheaper and used BEVs reflecting a more typical 30% at 3 year point depreciation level.

      @GruffSillyGoat That 300+ % increase is likely, in part, to the increasing number of leased cars coming to the market. It will decrease as more and more EVs are sold on, for replacement EVs after leasing. Not enough, yet, on the second hand market for them to hang about before being purchased (as well as their popularity, of course). It’s only statistics, after all - and one set of results is not necessarily the norm. My EV, if I part-exchanged it, would be quickly snapped up by a new owner. That is one reason why I won’t be changing it! I might as well keep the salesperson’s/dealership’s chunk of cash in my pocket (and pretend I’m the new owner of a fantastic EV replacement for my last fossil burner.)🙂 I am expecting it to last at least another 15 years - probably longer than I will.
