He wrote the book just a few miles from Ed Gein... before Gein's murders came to light. The parallels to this movie really freaked Bloch out.

Basically this is a review of the particular audiobook that was listened to. Poor review at best. I'm ok the book wasn't read or the story wasn't liked - but at least the negative points should have been well made, which they really are not. Came away more confused than enlightened. If anything - this did make me want to pick up the book again - so thumbs up for that!

You have to remember that Jackson was screwed by the studio who pushed for three movies when he wanted deltorro to direct 2 movies only, complications with the studio made deltorro leave forcing Jackson to work under pressure to rewrite the script entire in the time frame of only a year which was what the studio was giving him, utterly stupid on them those greedy bastards so I give Peter Jackson 100% of my support with him doing as much as he could with the movies

The book also plays heavily into whos actually bad here. Humans or buggers? Its explicitly stated that buggers never attacked civilians on earth, while humans whiped out entire buggers planet indiscriminately.

Although I prefer the novel over the film, the novel didn't convince me that Regan was possessed. With a the medical analyses and jargon, I felt Regan was a very badly behaved pre-teen seeking attention with a knack for convincing others that they witness actions which never happened. She manipulated their minds to succumb to the power of suggestions. Typical spoiled rich kid antics, where permissive parents think it's either cute or ignore the gravity of their misbehaviors. Chris is not a disciplinarian. She giggles, when the psychiatrist alerts the mother of Regan's obscenities during their medical meetings. She has no intention of punishing her child for her complete lack of respect for her elders and dignitaries. My.mom would have beaten the hell out of me, had the scenes unfolded in my house. She wouldn't have needed a priest to drive out the antics. The film drives home the possession notion better, but I still live the novel. It's a great psychological drama with me left to question, whether Regan is possessed by a demon and whether the church can really help. The film takes away that choice from the viewer and insists the girl must be exorcized. The actual case involving a teen boy was disputed by witnesses at his own exorcism, including family members and clergymen. Having read the actual basis for the film, I admit feeling the real case lacked enough evidence to assert that Ronald was truly possessed. That spilled over into the novel for me, and I doubt Regan was either. Blatty truly knew his medical and psychological backgrounds, and he crafts a question from beginning to end. He allows the reader to evaluate Regan's conditions and decide for ourselves what her state is. Still, the film was so sensationalized, that we must live the film because of and in spite of it's shenanigans and shock.

I watched the 1st 30 seconds of "The Departed"..., already my temper was up! I have daughters..., if some sleazeball asked one of them, "have you got yer period yet?" while I was there..., it would be game over for him right quick! Also I didn't much care for the (brutal!)execution on the beach scene...,

  • @BarelloSmith

I'm in the process of reading the book and watching the movie (doing both simultaneously with first reading parts of the book and then watching the corresponding part of the movie). I am not quiet finished yet but I believe, if I just had watched the movie, I wouldn't have the faintest idea what the hell was going on. The parts of the film that exist are great and everything is almost exactly as I imagined it from the book, including the atmosphere. But as you said, the lack of narration or general background information keeps you completely oblivious what Winston actually wants or why he is doing what he does. It also seems to be way to short of a movie, so you can't really immerge in the story. I think if they just made it longer and somehow found a way to convey more of the background information and motives of the characters, it would've been a much better film.

The book was a classic The movie was aggressively mediocre and had almost no relationship to the book other than the title HBO or Netflix should buy the rights and make it into an anthology series - that way each episode and character in the book can get an epsiode. If they go long enough & run out of stories & characters from the book, they can follow the book format - character describes how they personally experienced WW Z, in the part of the world that they were in, to a reporter doing a series on the aftermath of the recently ended WW Z - with the series finale being "the Battle for The Hero City" (that was the last battle of the war, fought right here in New York City, which was a "White Zone" - no living people, all Zombies) That would be must see TV

I’d love the book I finished reading it. The other day took me a very long time because I have ADD HD and it’s kind of help me also pick up the book. I also seen the movie before I read the book I noticed and there’s a lot of stuff taken out and a lot of stuff at the end at it in Because at the end of the book, he says he’s just grateful he’s happy to be alive, but this added thing with the space Academy is very interesting

I h ave been a Stephen King fan since I read Carrie. I agree very much with your take on the movie. I always felt that Jack seemed crazy already when they arrive at the Overlook. In the book, you get to see the hotel take him over. While I like the movie, I love the book.

I remember seeing these as brand new movies, both are a tie,. But I prefer Terminator 1 because it's a more terrifying darker movie where part 2 is more of an Action movie. Kinda like Conan the Barbarian versus the Destroyer.

I believe 1000% that the book is SCARIER! I can't even imagine reading this book, ever! Lol that movie scarred me for life, I was way too young to watch it and then couldnt sleep for months. Books are ao much more intimate and get inside you like you are holding on to these characters and that would freak me out. 😂 I do love horror movies, though, go figure.

I have about 100 pages left in the book. I saw the movie like 20 years ago. The book has the minor character George Hatfield in it, the book talks about Jack's abusive dad, and it has a scrapbook detailing the Overlook's history. None of those things are in the movie. The book does not have a maze in it.

One other huge problem is the lack of mass and (angular) momentum. Acceleration, de acceleration, there seems to be no realistic constraints. It’s not even overuse of CGI, it’s overuse of bad CGI.
