Joker: Folie à Deux - Movie Review (Spoiler-Free)
intro music blew my ears out ...
Could Have Avoided This Plot!: If Kevin’s family were not so stressed in the first Home Alone movie with getting to Paris, France after they overslept, and didn’t miscount a random kid (He and his family were going to Florida for Christmas.) as Kevin they would have remembered Kevin, woke him up and brought him with them to the airport on their plane to Paris instead of ignorantly leaving Kevin behind. Furthermore, if Kevin’s dad remembered to close lock the garage before the family left it would have never caused Kevin to discover (Who was completely unaware of the fact that his family planned to travel to the airport to depart on their airplane to Paris, France on airport buses, he thought they were going to drive to the airport on their cars, it likely happened because it's expensive to afford parking for your cars at an airport and it's easier to travel there by bus.) that his family’s cars were still parked in the garage and never drove to the airport to depart to France with them never would have assumed that his family disappeared for real like Kevin wished, but instead Kevin would have realized that his family simply left for France, Paris without him and either telephone called them to let them know he was home and travel straight back home to get him sooner, ask someone like the police to escort him there or simply wait for his family to come back home to Chicago to met or reunite with him making use of his time in the process. It also would have prevented the Wet Bandits’ robbery on Kevin and his family’s house. (The scene where Kevin’s parents realize they left their son behind by accident on the plane flight to Paris is also funny.)
Dont waste your money, snooze fest. Not scary at all.
Thank you, but if Mark has to carry the entire movie.... we are in trouble. For example, thank G. Planet of the Apes, had the monkeys.
Great review mate, I am a big fan of Mel and really loved his interview with Rogan talking about the Passion of the Christ sequel, really insightful on his filmmaking process and how his beliefs inform his storytelling. Sad that this one is lacking as he's made some really outstanding films in the past. I think Hacksaw Ridge and Apocalypto are my favourites of his. Really like the mention of Dockery in Boy Kills Worlds as well as she was great in that one. I'm a big fan of Downton Abbey so always rooting for her haha Also, 'What the fuck was with that moose?!' 😂 great stuff bud 👏
Thank you so much mate, appreciate it. Braveheart will always be my favourite. The Joe Rogan interview is on my watchlist, looking forward to checking it out. Yeah, this one for me was very similar to The Wolf Man, the ingredients are there to create an adrenaline fueled, intense, thrill ride. But it never really comes together. Mark Wahlberg is great though. But yeah... That 🫎... 😂 Thanks again for watching! Appreciate it.
The Dennis Quaid shrimp eating scene was something but I wouldn't say "captivating".
Thank you for watching and for the comment! Yeah, I completely agree that I used the wrong word here, and realized this while editing the video. I was trying to convey the sort of otherworldly/surreal vibe of the movie but wasn't quite able to articulate it within that moment of the recording.
I gave it a 1.5/10, and that’s only for the opening scene and the new spin on werewolf’s. But truthfully this movie is just godawful. Not good whatsoever. The whole movie and transformation takes place within a few hours in the middle of the night. It’s all just so slow and boring. Just not good
I may have been slightly generous with my own score, but I appreciated so much what was being attempted with its ideas/themes. The opening scene is without a doubt one of the strongest moments within the movie, I really liked how this scene played out. I liked the idea of it being set within one evening but is let down by its execution, from the writing, to how moments are constructed. Again potential is there, it just doesn't fully come to life. Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts.
Great to hear! I'm seeing it this weekend, so it sounds like something to look forward to.
Awesome! I hope you enjoy it. Let me know what you thought. Thanks for watching 👍
@@AshleyThomas88 I liked it! I think even more than I expected to. Definitely agree it's more of a supernatural thriller/drama. It was good. An interesting look at the family and the 'presence' aspect was cool.
Awesome! Glad you enjoyed it.
Great review mate! I'm late to the party but got a chance to see it and absolutely loved it and feel very similar to you about the film. It's the first one of Eggers' films I can say I've truly loved, however, as I've always thought his films are very well-crafted and stunningly designed but have never been compelled by them as much as I wanted to be. That did change with this film and I feel as though I may have to rewatch his past films and re-evaluate my thoughts on his filmography.
Thank you man! Appreciate it. Glad to hear you loved it just as much as I did. The Northman was my favourite and still might be, but I adored how he crafted Nosferatu. He manages to create the sensation of being under Count Orloks spell, though how the story is constructed. Beautiful stuff.
I would also give it a 5/10. I like the (mostly) one night set-up and the setting, I liked the werewolf vision scenes, I think Christopher Abbott is quite good. The shots of the wolf man's breath in the opening was great! That's cool. But parts of it felt so shallow, like the full emotions weren't there. It rushed through some things, and then some parts were repetitive and dragged. It wasn't as horrifying as I would want a story like this to be (and as horrifying as I know Leigh Whannell can do). You're right that some of the dialogue is so unnatural, and one performance in the film is so bad, I thought the film really went got worse as it went along.
Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts. Yeah, a big disappointment for me and also a very frustrating experience, because all the key ingredients and ideas are there to make a very effective retelling of this classic horror icon/story. The performances suffered I feel due to its writing and that it was so on the nose with its themes, hence the lack of emotion.
thank you, had no idea what this was about
Great review Ashley! I am not a fan of listening to scores outside of the film but it’s nice to see your passion!
I haven't seen all of these films, but Megalopolis, Argylle, Night Swim, and Imaginary are also in my bottom ten. I remember Imaginary had a couple really cool early teaser trailers, and then that movie was just not it. I will admit though, I didn't hate Madame Web, and I actually really like Kraven the Hunter, it's in my top fifteen of the year. I'm excited to see how this year goes!
Yeah, the trailers for Imaginary got me really excited for the movie, it was such a major disappointment. So much potential within its premise. I didn't hate Kraven, I was more intrigued by what I felt like they were, or had attempted to do with its story. I definitely smelt a waft of studio interference, maybe. Great to hear you enjoyed though.
Great insight, especially your #1. Looking forward to more. Keep it up.
Thank you for watching and the kind words, I really appreciate it.
Great list looking forward to watching some those films. By the way The Holdovers was my 1 movie last year my list for this year is: Dune 2 The Substance Challengers Anora Nosferatu The Order Heretic Conclave Saturday Night Furiosa Keep on the good content cheers!!!
Thanks for watching and sharing. Great list! I still have not seen Conclave, it's appearing in a lot of people's faves. There's so much I need to catch up on.
- Anora - *The Substance* - Wicked - The Wild Robot - Hundreds of Beavers - Dune Part 2 - Furiosa - The Brutalist - Nosferatu - Conclave - *Challengers* - My Old Ass - A Real Pain - The Seed of the Sacred Fig - The Count of Monte Cristo - All We Imagine as Light
Thanks for sharing your favorites. Anora is appearing in a lot of top 10 favorites. Its a movie I really wanted to watch, unfortunately, I didn't get around to it. Need to check it out soon. I really liked both Wicked and The Wild Robot, Wicked being a major surprise for me. The Brutalist is another movie I've got my eye on, but it's a 2025 release for the UK. Thanks for watching and for the comment, I really appreciate it.
All of us Strangers was a last year film for me. Here's my. TOP 30 1) The Substance (Fargeat, 2024) 2) Amelia Pérez (Audiard, 2024) 3) Old Oak (Ken Loach, 2024) 4) Kneecap (Peppiatt, 2024) 5) Nosferatu (Eggers, 2024) 6) Made in England: The Films of Powell and Presburger (Hinton, 2024) 7) Love Lies Bleeding (Rose Glass, 2024) 8) Anora (Baker, 2024) 9) The Master And Margarita (Lockshin, 2024) 10) Tuesday (Oniunas-Pusic, 2023) 11) Abigail (Bertinelli-Olpin) 12) Conclave (Berger, 2024) 13) Wicked Little Letters (Thea Sharrock, 2023) 14) Kinds of Kindness (Lanthimos, 2024) 15) My Old Ass (Park, 2024) 16) A Different Man (Schimberg, 2024) 17) Heretic (Beck and Woods, 2024) 18) We Live In Time (Crowley, 2024) 19) Saturday Night (Reitman, 2024) 20) Late Night With the Devil (Cairnes Bros, 2023) 21) The Vourdalak (Beau, 2023) 22) Deadpool and Wolverine (Levy, 2024) 23) Juror #2 (Eastwood, 2024) 24) Rumours (Maddin, Johnson and Johnson) 25) Strange Darling (Mullner, 2023) 26) MadS (Moreau, 2024) 27) You'll Never Find Me (Bell & Allen, 2023) 28) Civil War (Garland, 2024) 29) Handling the Undead (Hvistendahl, 2024) 30) Alien Romulus (Alvarez, 2024)
Thank you for taking the time to share your favorites, that's a great list. Great to see The Substance at the top of yours, I enjoyed this movie so much! There are quite a few in your favorites that I didn't get around to catching, one of those being Anora which I really wanted to check out. Will definitely put it on my list of must watch movies. Thanks for watching and for the comment, I really appreciate it.
I thought it looked gorgeous, and I thought the performances were great, but other than that I was let down. I'd heard going in that it was slow-paced but I found it VERY slow-paced and it negatively affected my experience of it. I was rarely engaged or interested emotionally. I think I can officially say that Eggers is a filmmaker I respect more than I actually like.
I get why you found it slow, but for me that's what worked in building up the sense of dread that accumulates to its climax. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts.
It was legit, I just wish there was another reason to hate Orlok other the children. I didn't hate the guy 😫 as much as I should've.
All of Us Strangers as well was amazing which would gone in my list for sure if I'd made up my mind about release date haha thats on me. But I did in fact cry whist watching that film and thats what the best films do for me, elicit that powerful emotional response from the viewer, amazing pick for first place film bud.
Brilliant list and video mate, production quality and editing are awesome. Holdovers and Late Night with the Devil I absolutely loved and I was debating whether to include them due to them being 2023 films, but you're right we don't get those particular films til 2024 in UK so they are movies in that year for us haha
Thank you for the kind words man, I really appreciate it. Yeah, the 2023 releases that we don't get until 2024 is a really frustrating one, especially with Nosferatu this year falling on Jan 1st (today!) but that means it's now a 2025 release for us 😂
Blink Twice was also number two on my list this year! Fuck it's good. Longlegs and The Substance didn't make my top ten, but they were in my top fifteen, so close enough! Happy New Year!
Thank you for watching and the comment. Nice to see Blink Twice getting some love, I thought it was phenomenal in how the story was crafted. Great performances also from both Tatum & Naomi Ackie. One of the most horrifying & disturbing experiences of the year.
Sorry, can't look to the end because the sound is so unsynced. I know that it obviously doesn't seem to be that important to many larger youtubers, but as a beginner I would pay attention to such things, which are technically easy to correct.
I’m not sure I would say that the sound is ‘so unsynced’. I think I disagree with you, for larger RUclipsrs they don’t have to worry about it as they have someone doing the editing etc for them usually. Whereas this is a passion project for him so he’s doing the best he can. Although I am sure he appreciates the feedback regardless
Thanks for taking the time to watch as much as you did, I appreciate the feedback.
Great video bud! It's true it does suck we dont get a lot of movies till january that other places get months prior haha I also really like the look of Nosferatu
Thank you for watching and the comment man, appreciate it! Yeah I hate that we get some of these releases sometimes weeks after the states. Yeah really exited for Nosferatu, I'm a big fan of Eggers.
@AshleyThomas88 No problem at all bud. Great to see another welshman on here as well haha there's not many of us. I think The Lighthouse may be my favourite Eggers film and he is someone I do admire as a director.
Haha yeah, there are a few of us out here. Where abouts you in Wales? I caught the accent but couldn't quite place it. I'm in the South Wales Valleys. LOVE the Lighthouse but I think Northman is probably my favorite at the moment.
@@AshleyThomas88 same here mate haha from the valleys as well. I feel as though eggers is continuing the style of horror that kubrick popularised with the shining with the slow build-up of dread and tension. It's great to see him be a custodian for that style of horror.
I disagree. I think Allerton did feel the same way for Lee, but it wasn't the right time. And he didn't know how to either.
I kinda get where you're coming from, I've also always enjoyed the story and the emotional impact of Wicked above all else, especially with its darker, critical undertones. And while I can see that some scenes might turn out even more emotional without songs, other scenes would probably lose a lot of their breathtaking power, see Defying Gravity for instance. I also loved the film and enjoyed that they didn't shy away from the darker elements. One moment that definitely isn't in the show, but shocked me quite a bit, was Mme Morrible telling the monkeys (post-transformation): "If you wanna keep your families safe, you'll stay loyal to our wizard!" That implies there's a dungeon with a bunch of poor little monkey hostages locked up somewhere in the palace? Horrific 🙊 But will probably make Elphaba freeing them in act 2 all the more meaningful.
Thank you for watching and the comment. I completely agree. It's been a while since I've watched the show so I can't quite remember what was original or not. But I enjoyed it just as much.
Aimee is even hooked and listened to the review 😂. Glad you agree with her on how great the movie is. Never watched Ariana Grande and Cynthia Eviro in anything before but there chemistry in this film was next level and am looking forward to seeing part 2
It's not out in Canada yet but I've got tickets for this weekend! I hope that I dig it more than you, though it sounds disappointing.
Thank you so much for watching. I still highly recommend checking it out, I still had a lot of fun with it. It really didn't feel like a 148 mins, it was a breeze to sit through but that in many ways kind of plays into the issues I also had with the movie.
Thanks for avoiding spoilers in ur review. I subscribed because of that. 👍🏾
Thank you so much for subscribing! I really appreciate it. I much prefer spoiler-free reviews as I'm very passionate about people fully experiencing film the way its intended, I strongly believe trailers today are also showing way too much. Thanks again.
I was brought up on George a romero Dawn of the Dead i watched it as an 7 year old in 1983 but i have to look away now at Gore i thought it was part of getting older?
I'm definitely more squeamish than I've ever been, so maybe it is? 😂 But practical will always be 100% more effective.
I like to think he didnt kill the little child in the kichen cupboard. The new salems lot i found disturbing the little boy in the sack, were as this is so kind of over the top i cant take it to seriously. Great review man
Thank you for watching and the kind words. I've yet to catch Salems Lot, though it's on my to watch list.
I don't think I'm as high as an 8 out of 10, but maybe a 7. I liked it, I think it's a really interesting set-up and it started quite strong, but I found it very talky and it loses a bit as it gets closer to the end. But Hugh Grant is absolutely fantastic, he was so good.
Yeah, the first two acts are when the movie is at its strongest. The pacing becomes a little bumpy within the 3rd act and it's conclusion, but it's 3 performances and such a strong set up that kept me engaged. I enjoyed it so much and felt the concept/premise was handled in a very smart way.
a comment for the RUclips algorithm god. 🙂
this deserves more attention.
Thank you so much, appreciate it.
Having recently seen this myself, I tend to agree with your assessment. It embraces the b-movie vibes and doesn't try to be something that it is not.
Thank you for watching and the comment. I agree and that's why I enjoyed the movie so much, even though it was lacking the character.
I've found that a lot of RUclipsrs are giving this quite bad to mediocre reviews, but I loved it, so I'm like, yay, I'm not alone now!! Ashley likes it too! haha. I'm with you, there were moments I had to look away too, I found it quite creepy and unnerving and tragic as well. Naomi Scott gave a fantastic performance, all your praise is spot on and put so eloquently. I would happily watch a Smile 3, but I'm also interested in seeing Parker Finn branch out and create a new world. Also, perfect use of Ray Nicholson.
Glad to hear you liked the movie, I also loved this! I think what Parker Finn is doing, in regards to continuing the story, is quite smart in a way. There is so much room to just play around with the concept and have fun with it. Yeah I completely agree, perfect use of Ray Nicholson. Thank you for watching and the kind comments, I really appreciate it.
ok.... my guy, i think you set video volume WAYYYYYYYYYYY too high, i had to put it down to 1%
@gurnardherded3539 Thank you for the comment. Ah, really? I'll have to check it out. Apologies for that.
When Adam drivers character Skype calls his wife …… do you think he ………..Cesar 🤭
I Had Not Been to a Theater since 2009, and My Wife’s Girlfriend had seen this Film a couple of days ago. AND SAID IT WAS A WILD RIDE! I’m a Big Fan of Body Horror! Then reading some of these Comments I said , this is for Me! And we went to see it! Great camera Work, Great Acting, it was completely OVER THE TOP!! Was way more than I EXPECTED!! Iv seen A lot of Body Horror Films dating back to the70s! And this one Took it to A WHOLE NEW LEVEL! GO SEE IT! Now! And Be Sure To Fasten YOUR SEATBELT!
Joaquin has won an Oscar for Joker 1 it would have a trillpgy Like Transformer the begginning
Nice
Cool
Awesome
Great to hear you enjoyed it. I did as well. People who took a particular message from the first movie (justified violent anger at the world) will get the opposite message in this one.
It's different. It's offbeat. It's most definitely unconventional in its presentation and delivery. It possesses supreme visuals. Some call it a mess and say it's unbalanced. It is, in fact, a beautiful mess and is perfectly unbalanced. It's a Francis Ford Coppola masterpiece.
It's one of those movies that the more I think about it, the more my appreciation/fondness of what's being attempted grows. I'm not a fan of how it's story plays out, but very much adore the themes Coppola is exploring and how it's told visually. Thank you for watching and the comment.
Great breakdown! What a strange movie, lol. From the trailers, I did enjoy the visuals, but the story seemed too metaphorical from the promos to make me go out to the theater.
