The Easiest Way to Get that Film Look!?
This winter I have been carrying my Canon EOS R5 with an adapter that makes it so I can use my vintage Minolta Rokkor lenses. I've been enjoying the unique characteristics of the vintage glass in certain situations. Sometimes just the act of manually focusing also slow me down to think about the photographic processes. Since I have not being shooting film for a while this is a way to get a bit of that vibe & look again.

Two Days of Burnouts | Drag Racing Videography
Просмотров 389День назад
In September I worked with Babcox Media to help film their "Engine of the Week" series for their brand Engine Builder. We went to a couple of drag strips during Hot Rod Drag Week which is a drag and drive event(on near Columbus, OH & One near Indianapolis, IN) We were filming two camera interviews about cars and their engines and then grabbing b-roll of the engines. This is a little montage of ...
Riding the Storm Out & Shooting B-Roll in Nebraska

Hundred of video clips and thousands of photos after finally getting through the storms. It was an interesting trip to say the least. We had two flights canceled and even had to pull over our rental to avoid tornadoes. In the end though we were able to document two plants for Continental. I flew my DJI Mavic Pro 2, used my Canon EOS R5 for some slow motion b-roll, and the wireless mic on my DJI...
How Not To Shoot A Total Solar Eclipse(but still have a rad day)

A total solar eclipse is a truly amazing event - but I hadn't believed the hype. I only came up with a plan to view and photograph it at the last minute - but I'm glad I did. We had an amazing day riding out bicycle up the Towpath Trail to Cleveland's old Coast Guard Station. There are thousands and thousands of better photos of the actual eclipse than mine - but my day out with friends couldn'...

I Bought A Big White Lens & You Should Too.

After years of "zooming with my feet" I finally bought a big white zoom lens. This is the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L. I did not go with the RF version even though I use R cameras - The Canon EOS R8 & R5. In this video I discuss the reasons for this choice and compare examples of using this lens over the lenses that have been in my arsenal. I also explain why even though I love Sigma lenses I did ...

Watching typical RUclips camera reviews often make photographers feel like they always need the latest and greatest gear. Often what you are using is perfectly fine. I was taught early on that "you will know when you outgrow your gear". I still agree with that - its only necessary to buy new bodies or lenses when you start to feel the limitations of what you own. What Will Nikon Do with Red?!

The bombshell that Nikon Cameras have said they will buy the California company Red Digital Cinemas Cameras has shook the photography & videography world and has everyone speculating on what it means. Nikon has saved itself with the release of its Z9 and Z8 cameras and seems like a company on the rise after nearly losing it all with their late and weak entry into the mirrorless camera world. Be...

Canon and Nikon had been perfecting the ergonomics of cameras over decades and they had become near perfect. Cheap Lenses Are Awesome(sometimes)!

In this video I discuss my cheap, small and lightweight collection of RF lenses for my Canon EOS R5 and my R8. I really dig using these lenses on the R8 especially - that size and weight is just so awesome for what I like to do for fun. I may not use these for high professional work but I think it is worth keeping small lenses in the kit. I also talk about adapting vintage film camera lenses to...

Direct Positive in Large Format! RA4 Reversal Process!
When shooting digitial I only put old m42 lenses on my 5dmk3 even for professional shoots
I started using my Zenit lens on my R7, and it looks great! That’s exactly the feeling.
My ancient Helios 44-2 still really has that vintage yellowed look compared to the modern TTArtisan M42 remakes. They have more saturation, sharpness, and contrast, but there's a charachter that can't be replicated without severe doctoring
In some ways, I prefer the tone & contrast of older lenses vs the modern stuff.
Yeah. I saw it right away on the screen. Just got my adaptr eepmount yesterday
Definitely depends. I should have mentioned that I added a lot of contrast and a decent amount of saturation in the snow photos - will remember to show a before/after next time. But I didn't add that much to the indoor photos.
I love old lenses on modern cameras! Until recently I was using a Nikon F-mount camera which is hard (impossible maybe?) to adapt to other systems but still let you use an awful lot of vintage F-mount lenses, because that mount's been around forever. I upgraded to a Z-mount camera and got an old Pentax medium format lens that's *magic*. I also have a bunch of lenses for my Mamiya RZ and am thinking about getting the Fotodiox adapter for them, though it's not cheap (as you know, those lenses don't have any built-in focusing, so the adapter's more complex). My favorite F-mount lens is the Nikon 50/1.2 (not the crazy expensive Noct! Their smaller/"worse" 1.2). I love the way it gets weird when it's wide open but it's still good enough to not be obnoxious if you stop it down a little bit.
I really need to get one of my Nikons going. I haven't shot F since my F3 died. There are lots of good lenses here because the old owner shot Nikon's on location his whole career. - which is the same reason I have so much RZ stuff - that is what he used here at the studio. Those lenses are so great - I never even thought about adapting them though!! (guess I didn't know it was possible!)
I had high hopes after seeing the thumbnail. Also, you would get more views with a different thumbnail. at least that's my theory
I was just having fun cutting some footage to music. This is my secondary channel where I experiment and do what I like. I wanted the other videographer in the thumb but you’re right - a close up of a smoking tires would do even better.
@fitzwaterphotography9971 I enjoyed the content. Very well put together. I just know my car doesn't pull viewers, yet.
Wait. Is this literally your car - or one like it?!
@fitzwaterphotography9971 yes, that's my friend and I in the thumbnail
Awesome! Amazed this came across your feed as this channel is pretty small! I was freelancing with my friend's at Engine Builder for Babcox.
That was exciting😢
That was a very cool video! Perfect match between images and music. Very nicely done.
Thanks so much!
Were you shooting during the Hot Rod Power Tour? Very cool to see your art after recently discovering your bike riding channel.
No. Babcox just hires me when they are short handed - so I was only at this drag and drive event for a couple days. This was the only drag racing event I've done but I have done lots of other automotive and powersports shoots with them before. Cheers!
The way the music works with the slo-mo in the first minute or so is fantastic! Neat to see serenity and gracefulness in moments that might not have (I'm just guessing, never been to a drag race) felt exactly like that at the time.
Thanks! It was fun to cut this together and try and make it work with different music. It is definitely over-stimulating to be down there. Breathing in the tire dust and wishing I had ear plugs. My Canon doesn't capture audio in slow-mo so I added just a touch of car sound effects to try and add to the vibe but not overwhelm.
Cool Gig! classy photog and production. You have supercharged my day, thanks Tim.
Thanks!!
Bloody good job Tim..
Two ideas on how to create that composited photo in camera. Maybe a graduated neutral density filter, Not sure they make any that are quite thick enough though to get the eclipse knocked down enough to capture. Maybe flash on the foreground? I'm just spitballing.
I don' think you could get enough flash power through that many stops of ND and those shutter speeds(though shutter speed no longer matters on some of the Sony's and Nikon's). Not sure if they make a graduated ND that would go from strong enough to weak enough either - I doubt it? It could be possible - but I think there is a reason I've only seen people do it in post.
Up here in Southeast Michigan, we didn't get totality, but it was still pretty cool to see. My coworkers and I got to watch it for about a half hour during work, so that was nice.
I don't mean this to be, well mean...but as mentioned even 99.5% of totality is 1000x less than totality.
the juxtaposition of this day between your two channels contents is f***ing outstanding!!! thanks
Thanks you!

Fuji film is nice , its god on the greens , but not so good on the reds like Kodak.
Seems like a good time.
mmm silver in the drain is a problem for environment because you have to extract more Ag for films but it' does not poison nor it causes pathologies. Are you able to retrieve the Ag from the solutions? I don't think so. again the "ilford method" just concentrates all the rest of fixer in a little water that will go into the drain as well while if you wash the film in current water you diluite it much more making it much less dangerous. You know water doesn't disappear from the earth once if falls into the drain. Do you keep your shit in the toilet for days until you have enough and then you flush it? I think you have rather to drink less alcholic and believe less bs about what is "environmentally friendly". results seem good anyway but I prefer add a fixer eliminator bath as safety
cool - next time try commenting without being a total asshole. you'd probably even have friends then.
Thank you for this video. I just purchased one of these cameras. What speed film do you recommend? Do you know the shutter speed and aperture?
Shutter speed will be unreliable but they are usually around 1/50th. So hold it still and use ISO 100.
@@fitzwaterphotography9971 Thanks for responding. Just shot a successful roll using 400 speed film. Everything, direct sun and in shade, was nicely exposed.
oh awesome! Glad that worked! I have shot a number of old Kodak box cameras and have been most lucky with 100(I don't think they even had film like 400 when these came out!!)
The music makes this video a tough watch. i had to give up half way through. Just drop the volume down a bit, please!
Nah - just watch someone else.
@@fitzwaterphotography9971 Way ahead of you. 😆
Thanks for the walkthrough. Was that Barcelona on your negative?

I love this info! I will be adding a Canonet to my collection when that Camera Trade Show comes around in Brecksville. They always have a lot of good Canonets there!
Hello, I have a Cannnet QL19, and I have a question, the lense has in the aperture in Blu color the numbers 28, 20 and 14and in Blue also in the speed 30th of a second. No idea what is their function.
I have to admit I'm not 100% sure. It is either a shutter priority mode or something to do with flash sync.
The ql17giii lens is unreasonably good
Good story. Thanks. toronto canada.
Great video. Thank you
I generally adapt lenses. I use a drop-in filter adapter so I prefer EF lenses to RF lenses whenever I have the choice. I could not afford to replace all of my EF lenses with RF lenses even if I wanted to anyway.
As a Canon and MFT (Pana/ Olympus) guy, I say YES and NO. I started my photographic journey with kit lenses and entry level cameras, and when starting to have money, moved to hi-end cameras, premium, then pro lenses (Canon L, Leica, Zuiko PRO), and YES I recommend to move to pro lenses but also NO, because PRO lenses create big expectations, in terms of picture quality (I mean technical and not artistic). Meaning, it makes you focusing on details (resolution, sharpness) more than on the actual picture itself.
I carry cheap lenses when I ride my bike knowing I just want the memories but in good enough quality. When I'm working I want to deliver the best images possible and this lens has made that so much easier. I feel I can focus much easier on getting the better "actual picture" when I have the gear capable of it. I wish I had bought this lens years ago. I have been making so many better photos at events than I would have in the past.
I decided on the Mark2 of this lens myself after owning the Sigma version. I couldn’t justify the upgrade on my R6. At some point I will upgrade if the need is truly there. I use mine for Sports and I shoot Soccer. I do like the fact that I don’t have to carry the adaptor with me and just slapping on the RF. I have a RF24-7. I did see the Sigma 105 f1.4 and was thinking I can put that on my R50 crop sensor for better low light in some places where stadium light is bad. Thoughts?
I wouldn't go with the Sigma for sports - the AF isn't bad but its just not what it was designed for. It is a portrait lens. I wouldn't want the fixed focal length and slower focusing for that.
Couldn't sneak that sign past me! I know Szalay's when I see it! Awesome video!
Thanks! I worked there for almost a decade. Used to carry my film cameras sometimes.
Thanks for this!
Thanks!!
Cheers!
You can rotate the digital back on the camera, just switch it to the R on the right sight of the camera and rotated, you got the adapter plate. You don't have to switch to another camera, put it in the R and rotate.
Thanks! I did figure that out after calling the original owner. I knew it had to do that but jus could figure it out. All on me - I have the manuals here....
I fortunately got a 70-200mm f2.8 iii on Marketplace for $900 and I was shocked the whole way back home after in person meet at how extremely clean the lenses is, now I don't have to worry about RF version in my mind with that extending tube mechanism anymore. I use for wildlife with R7 and crop is just insanely sharp. Best 70-200mm of all time.
Dang - that is a killer deal! I saw some cheaper but didn't trust the sellers. I have been using it constantly since. Even on a 80 mile bike ride to see the eclipse!
I Love your content. Very very relatable. Speak about winning mindset in the future many photographers get stuck die to a mindset issue.
Thanks! I will! I think with things always changing being positive and willing to transition are key!
Any dude with a beard that also owns a cat - must be a pretty alright kind'a guy! I subscribed!!! Now, on your next video show us the cat.... lol.
Uh oh. I just shaved. I’ll double down on the cat footage!
love the angle! here for more
Thanks!
Interesting glass.... i use and have several smc f series glass from the pentax line. I shoot pentax so its an easy one for me. Cool video review.
I have only grown to love it even more - starting to feel like how did I live without it already. I have Pentax film cameras and lenses but I have never used their modern cameras. Thanks! Cheers!
@@fitzwaterphotography9971 should do an update and some photos to go with it. That would be 😎
I just wanted to check your channel out& though I'm not into photography it's interesting to see how you approach your Occupation, and as I suspected ,I enjoyed it because I believe you are a great communicator! This channel will grow easily man, just keep talking!😉👍
Thanks so much!
Still an EF user and I use the Macro 24-105 for landscape and macro and a Sigma 150-600 for wildlife. Now you know my entire set up 😂
Nice! If I didn't wear out my 5DIV it would still; be a perfectly capable camera.
@@fitzwaterphotography9971 I may still be using the EOS Rebel I was gifted if film was cheaper and I didn't get into bird of prey.
I sold the same lens and adapter to help pay for a RF 100-500 F4.5-7.1 and glad I did. The EF 70-200 F2.8 is a very heavy lens to carry around. Just curious, the Canon RF 70-200 F4 is about the same price as what you paid, but shorter and much less in weight. Did you need the EF F2.8 for the wider aperture? I'm seriously considering the getting the RF 70-200 F4.
I need the 2.8 for a number of reasons. Low light event photography(I really notice when I switch back to my 24-104 f/4), getting the shallower depth for separation, and I feel the shallow depth also makes it a much better portrait lens as it has beautiful background blur. Personally for my work I would never buy an f/4 lens again.
I just found your channel and I really like it. Your comment on skipping at least one generation on new models is a principle I've used for some time. It works really well for cell phones too. As a hobbyist I've found if you can make the most of what you have in gear is sufficient for the quality of images you are trying to achieve, then you don't need anything new. When your needs exceed that capability is when to start looking. I'm not a fanboy of Canon but like you, it's what I started using and continue to do so. I started with a Canon EF film SLR (showing my age) and now have an R5 upgrading from a 5DS. If Canon comes out with a R5S someday, it will be mine. If not, then maybe a medium format.
I'm wondering if at this point they are waiting to fill up the line-up(R1, R5 II) before releasing a high MP camera or if they have decided it is just too niche to be worth their time?
@@fitzwaterphotography9971 I know it's more complicated but generally higher MP with a backlit or stacked sensor means better dynamic range. IMO better dynamic range will never be too niche.
You make some good points. Many people tend to measure a "successful" photographer to the guys who have a massive following on social media, are super specialised etc. I'm a pro of 25 years, and yes, in time things do niche down a bit, BUT, like you, I do whatever comes across my way, and being a generalist is probably where most people who make a living from photography are. My RUclips channel just gave me an excuse to start playing with my old film gear again and really helped me reignite the love for shooting and the analogue process.
I will have to check out your channel. I feel the same - it is motivating me to try new things again - I was out with vintage lenses on my R8 the other day. Yes - success to me is not having to work other jobs anymore!
I’m enjoying your photography content. My son still falls into the hobbyist category, though he uses photography in his journalism major. His most recent toy has been a Canon EOS Rebel 2000, which works like new and cost home about $10.
My first digital camera was a Rebel. I remember Andri Agassi promoting the film ones back in the day!
Ha, didn't recognize you without the beard.
I like being clean shaven - I hate shaving so I only do it a few times a year.
@@fitzwaterphotography9971the change looks good!
Recently subscribed to both of your channels. I'm into both topics. Hanging out and nerding out about cameras sounds cool. I really dig platforms like Josh Sattin's Camera Talk live stream and The Moe and O Photo Show Podcast (though it's been months since they've published an episode). Best wishes on growing this channel!
I will have to check those out - I'm not familiar with them. Cheers!
Pleasantly surprised! Thought I was in for a biking video, then realized this is a new channel. Photography and cycling are my passions too. Keep it up, please.
Thanks! The bike channel used to have a lot of photography but as the pandemic took off so did the bike videos. So I created this channel so I could still make some photo content when I feel like it. Cheers!
I, too, got the kit 24-105 with my R6m2 and fell in love. But it wasn't until I got my EF 70-200 m1 that I really started improving my photography skills.
The 24-105 is a very practical lens. I use it for tons of stuff and it is decent at everything. The 70-200 f/2.8 is a special lens. I think it looks better even at 200mm than the 24-105 ever does. Both will still almost always be with me when working though. I am literally seeing if I can back up enough to use the 70mm end of the long lens though instead of switching to the f/4 😂
