Water Absorption + Transport in Crop Plants (Demo Video)
Просмотров 76Год назад
Water is key to plant survival, but how do plants move it where it needs to go? Plants don't have a pump to move water along, and use properties of water to their advantage instead! Water potential is a measurement of the tension on water to move in a certain direction. Components of water potential are gravity, solutes, matric, and pressure potential. All but pressure are typically negative va...

Tiller Appearance: Photothermal Quotient & Phyllochron
Просмотров 4662 года назад
With cooler temperatures and plenty of moisture in corn fields across the Midwest, my Twitter feed has been full of tiller pictures! Two of the many factors driving tiller development are the photothermal quotient and phyllochron, which I discuss in this video. Interested in learning more about tillers? Check out my website: rveenstra.wixsite.com/tillers For more information on the photothermal...

One of these opportunities to share our research is the annual meeting of the American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America, and Soil Science Society of America (ASA-CSSA-SSSA). This is an international meeting held in diffe...
Corn Tiller Project: Hand Harvest & Why It's Important
Просмотров 2782 года назад
Harvest is my favorite time of year. We have watched these plants grow all season long - let's see what they really did for us! You won't see a combine in any of my harvest posts or pictures. Ears from each plot are carefully picked and shelled by hand. This is a lot of work, but allows us to really understand where on the plant our grain is coming from! "How much grain did the tillers provide?...
Plant Density Comparisons: Corn Tiller Impacts
Просмотров 30 тыс.3 года назад
When corn tillers enter the equation, we see some blurred lines between our three different plant densities - 10,000, 17,000, and 24,000 plants per acre! Tillers provide a significant and impressive amount of biomass to our corn plants, allowing 10,000 plants per acre to compete with 24,000 plants per acre. We've seen this compensation ability in several locations over the last three years - bo...
Tillering Project Hybrids: P0657AM & P0805AM Development Differences
Просмотров 4933 года назад
Not all corn hybrids were created equal! Although genetics are not a major focus in our study, we want to make sure that our trials are fair. By using two hybrids, we are able to more generally evaluate responses than if we used only one hybrid. Hybrids do not always behave differently, but in some cases (like in these 2021 Garden City plots) they do! Come to the field with me to check out the ...

key results, starting at about 30 mins, seems to be no benefit to removing tillers, and possible negative impacts. Based on this I will not remove tillers from my sweet corn.

Is the particular hybrid more susceptible than others. Also plant population. Over breed hybrids. Would also love to see leaf sample results for actual plant nutrition as some say tillers can be a result of good fertility. But I’m no expert. Would be interesting to see what conclusions are found.

You can harvest more corn without removing tillers. So just let it grow. Then, Photosynthesis produces more con

Different scenario in my home garden, but I'm not surprised at all. I often get 3 or 4 ears per plant. I have had some with 5 or 6. Tillers, to me, are a sign that you have good fertility and good spacing. The tillers actually lend nutrition to the main plant and grow their own roots.

What corn spacing did you decide worked the best? How wide of a row? And distance apart of the seed?
