@@joha_mune I really like the idea of printing the vinyl stroke/outline of a sign and using the gold leaf for the filled in parts. i see that the letters are reversed on a clear peice of glass, i'm interested to know if it could work on a mirror, but i think the vinyl layer needs to be under the gold leaf, there seems to be a difference between using a vinyl sticker vs painting the lines with a pinstripe brush. I'm in love with the results you achieve.

How do you suggest heating the gelatin mix when you're on location? Also, I assume since you used real gold not imitation, that's why the gold is so shiny with no lines/cracks?

    • @joha_mune

Hello Sara, Hope you're doing well. You can prepare the size at your place and bring it with you to the location. You don't need the size to be warm for gilding. I have never used imitation gold, so don't know how it behaves. But with real gold, you need to burnish it to make it shinier and remove the wrinkles. On all my reverse image glass art I have used a product called; "Bon Ami Natural Powder Cleanser" ... I just purchased a can of it for under $7.00 Australian ... you just add a bit of water to it and i used a sea sponge ... Been using it for Gold Leaf and One Shot lettering enamel since the 60's ... also you really don't need to scrub it really hard. ... Just nice circle patterns ... then after that part, I hand buff it to remove any dust and then I "Prepsol - Wax and Grease Remover" ... I also use Prepsol on vehicles I pin strip and/or letter ... Silicon is in all these one application waxes that are used by most people since the 1960's ... causes "fish eyes" in the paint. Fun post ... thanks for your efforts.

If its warm it could be maybe a couple of hours and if its cold could be a bit longer. A good way to know is to check that the gold has turn more shinny, like a mirror. Once it's dry you should be able to see your reflection on the gold. I hope this help. All the best, Joha

I've done (before I retired 22 years ago) airbrush demonstrations all over NSW at TAFE schools, plus Sydney Opera company and Sydney theater group among many others. Before I moved from the USA, I had pin stripped and done gold leaf signage in the USA after 9 years US Army (2/502 Inf 101st Airborne), including a combat tour in Vietnam. I still have two home studios, one for art and one for signs... also I set up my back yard shed to do reverse image (Chipped Glass, sand blasting) ... even at 75 years young, I paint almost every day. Even the ABC TV network put out a story about how art helps Veterans with PTSD.... From my experience it so helped me as I spent 330 days in the jungle in the A Shaw Valley as a Sniper. I was so lucky to have finished 3 years of an College Art Degree before being drafted, I finished at night classes before I got out of the Army....My partner in life and business just got back from doing a course in England.... The home of Gypsy caravans (unreal art work), Circus signs, canal boats (Craft Art) and PUB Signs... Years ago Ray Coral who was the head of the TAFE sign writing school in Sydney, told me about you Lianne ... I'm so glad I found this interview... be safe.
