The BEST advice for a music career...
This week I talk about the advice I would give my younger self if I could travel back in time. This video is full of things I wish I had known when I was 16 and decided to be a professional musician. It is so important for a young musician to keep their feet on the ground with sound philosophy as they lay the groundwork for a career. A young musician needs mentorship, time, humility, balance and a truly open mind and spirit. A career as a musician doesn't always look the way we dreamt it would be when we were young and that's ok! Stay open and free my friends and keep walking the path ♥️

In this video I talk about 5 reasons you CAN write a great song. There are so many reasons to make songwriting a major priority when it comes to having a career as an independent artist. The songwriting process looks different for every artist and is very difficult to teach which is all the more reason to get started today. When you go deep in your writing you set yourself up to set yourself ap...

This week I talk about the adventure of being a professional musician. Having been in the industry for 15 years I can confidently say that having a career as a musician is very challenging. There is so much about this career choice that is risky and thrusts an artist into unpredictable situations with unknown outcomes. The one thing that can always be counted on however is that being a musician...

This week is just a simple inspirational message about the power and purpose of creativity. The Creative spirit is the driver of our entire human reality. From art to skyscrapers, everything we see and interact with in our society is the result of a human being's creative spirit. When the creative spirit operates from love it positively influences reality through the use of thoughts, words and ...

This week I talk about what happens when we become too fixated on gear, equipment or products; stuff we think we need to make our art. Often times fixating on tools and gear separates us from the fundamentals of what is actually compelling about our art. The tools are a much smaller part of the equation than people make them out to be in their heads. The artistic mind and the resolution of an a...

In this the 20th episode of Sittin' With Jimi I share a clip from an interview legendary actor Ethan Hawke gave at Lincoln Center in 2018. He makes the point that when you pursue a career in the arts, you don't get to decide what you get out of it. The only thing you get to decide is whether...
Stop Chasing Musical Trends!!!

One of the greatest things I ever learned was to not chase musical trends. Musical and cultural trends change faster than the weather. The Greatest Time In History To Be An Artist
I'm 25, being 18 feels like yesterday. I write songs with my best mate, he's been writing lyrics for about 15 years now and loves all things English. I've written my own song in the past two years with my own lyrics but don't feel as though they have the depth that my lyricist mate does. I don't feel like giving up, but I do feel pretty old in the music world. I know what I need to do which is to get into music production but I keep on procrastinating. I'm also a drummer in a band with two sisters who write their own songs and don't struggle with their pride lol. I love your videos btw! Keep it up.
I enjoy your thoughts on this stuff. Thanks for the great videos. I think it's important to understand the difference between being an artist and/or a musician. I would certainly have explained this to my younger self 35+ years ago (I'm 53). You can certainly be either (artist or musician) or both, but understanding the difference between them, the financial implications, the risks, etc. is something that took me decades to fully grasp.
Good stuff! Took me til right about the last 5 years to really understand this. Sometimes a job is a job and sometimes a job is a job AND an opportunity to share art --- frequently it's both. Awareness and preparedness are key!
I'm 23 and I would tell my teenage self to stop worrying about not fitting in because of that crazy dream. Hold on to that dream. Own it. And do everything you can to get closer to it. Today, I wish I had done more. More music. And being open to build more around it. Like social media, branding, marketing, teaching etc. Educating myself about these topics earlier. I'd already have financial stability by now if I did. But I'm still glad I kept on going and started this journey in the first place. Thanks for your videos. I love that discussion space on your channel!
Nice! 23 is good time to realize all that! Keep learning friend - you've got time. Thanks for tunin' in ✌️
There are too many lessons that 13-year-old me needed to learn… but if there was only one thing I could go back in time 34 years and tell myself, it’s to give 100%. Literally 100%. Fully and completely. Put it all into the song. Put it all into the performance. Don’t be afraid to expose my vulnerabilities. Give everything I have to give and don’t hold back. Don’t be afraid. …but I wouldn’t have listened to myself. I didn’t realize I was afraid. And if I had, I would never have admitted it to myself. When I was in my mid-20s, I saw The Constantines for the first time. It was on the first of their cross-Canada double-headliner tours with The Weakerthans. They had already played an all-ages show earlier in the afternoon, but they came out and left it all on the stage again. 100% full energy from the start of the set to the encore. There was nothing left at the end of that show. I didn’t realize what was going on at the time, but that was my first glimpse at guys not being afraid to bare their souls on stage.
Terrific advice. Give them a show!
Surprisingly, most kids don't get this until its late. I tell every kid jamming in his basement to start writing songs and singing immediately no matter how bad you think it sounds.
hard to tell kids anything...I'm pretty sure 16 year old me wouldn't even listen to 34 year old me 😂
One advice I will give my 16 year old self is to, never stop performing live; that will allow you to maintain your confidence. To broaden up (as you have also said) to more musical works and music adjacent skills.
@@DannyLyriCa supreme advice! Nothing will teach you more or accelerate your ability than taking your music out of the practice room and onto the stage 🤘🤘
Calling more than just young artists.

Ugh, you're 34? That makes me... ugh. LOL. Sound advice and another great video good sir!
Love this! I’m 53 - and you seem to have all the perspective I would tell my 34 year old self! I’ve gone from busking, pub gigs to stadiums and all the way back again. The whole way the best gigs were always the ones that connected with an intimate audience - I’m now loving community gigs and house concerts. So important to put your artistic pride aside and realize you’re simply connecting and providing a service.
This is all such great advice. I love your message and positivity! Awesome video
Thank you so much!❤

holy shit, i did NOT expect almost 3 minutes of this video to completely open my eyes. I'm a decent songwriter, but lately i've been putting that aside, and doing exactly what doesn't need to be done- needless marketing, hours of technical tweaking. wow, i guess i'm gonna have to go back and just start writing better songs. instant sub, btw.
Glad to hear that friend! Thanks for the sub ✌️

Hi Jimi, congratulations on the Jimiversary of Sittin' with Jimi! I really enjoyed watching this episode! You speak wise words, which encourage me in my musical pursuits. Nice!!!! Thanks for tuning in friend ✌️
I think this might be the first time I've seen somebody talk about generating songs by ... Singing! That's how I do it, every song starts as a voice memo. My personal favorite song (with 8 whopping views!) is about this process of discovering songs while I'm out walking. What song, you say? Why, this one: ruclips.net/video/oRi6BWlvP6k/видео.htmlsi=xhBr2OBciN8bTs3_ I think it may be limited by the 50 second lecture I started out with in the video :)
I totally relate to your process and I am surprised it isn't discussed more often! Love your Artesian Waltz Jon --- nice words, nice classic poetry and rootsy arrangement. Beautiful stuff friend ♥️

Reading is great. Film works too. Prentend. Fantasize. Be a child. Play your guitar left handed. When you were learning you'd get angry at every click, clunk & scratch? If you'd only listened. Those were hooks!

Congrats on a year on YT and your success. That's awesome!
Thanks T ♥️
Good stuff. For me, a big leap to better songwriting was learning the 12-bar blues, and learning how many classic songs across so many genres use that one formula and variations of it - (The Doors' "Riders on the Storm", James Brown's "I Got You", The Clash's "Should I Stay or Should I Go", Prince's "Kiss", Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean", Tracy Chapman's "Give Me One Reason", Ray Charles' "Unchain My Heart", KC & The Sunshine Band's "Boogie Shoes", Stealer Wheel's "Stuck In The Middle With You", Elvis' "Hound Dog", Fleetwood Mac/Santana's "Black Magic Woman", etc.). It frees you up to experiment with lyrics and melody while giving you enough underlying structure to always make it sound like a song. It's only 3 chords, but it also has infinite variations in terms of making it minor, dorian, substituting chords, etc., and it teaches you the "feel" of moving to the IV and the V chords.
I to IV and back is the soundtrack of my life 😻
Def mine too lol 🙌
You’re so good dude. Well spoken. I enjoyed this so much
I appreciate that!
W video
There are roughly 132 places you could touch on a guitar fretboard. In trying to choose the right place we employ discipline. After so many years of discipline I found that with a measure of blind luck I find I'm playing some beautiful stuff without knowing where I am on the neck. Sometimes I get alarmed because you can't get there from here. Sometimes I think its always where I wanted to be, anyway, just knowing where to touch because that's where the note is, without having to know why. Having two or three playing states of mind is still kind of new to me, but its absolutely intriguing. Shows me the musical experience is infinitely expansive, leaving me no excuse but to go on.
Jimiversary... love it!

HAPPY JIMIVERSARY! 🎉 Damn Jim, this is one of my favorite videos you've made! Every point you made in this video really resonates with me. Especially the part about being visited by the muse. It's so true, when those ideas come you really have to at least write them down or record a melody or something. I was visited by my muse last week and I wrote one of my best works ever! And it wouldn't have happened if I didn't act on it right then and there at 3:00 in the morning. I can't wait to be visited by the muse again, it's what I live for, riding that wave of creativity, listening to your song over and over again getting excited and realizing your vision. Your encouragement makes me feel like I'm on the right path so thank you very much Jimi! ❤
So cool my friend! I can feel your excitement from here, I understand the feeling you are describing. Super stoked for you ✌️
Nothing to it but to do it
Happy Jimaversary! Nice voice 🎉 Thanks for giving props & appreciation for the two chord song. I played one of my three chord songs recently and a guy came up to me afterwards and said "you need more chords". I'm thinking, you need more manners but instead said something like, well John Prine would be proud/understand. We're on the same page, well said.
lol "You need more chords." That's a hilarious thing to tell a musician who's just performed. Glad you tuned in friend
Again, thank you! Inspiring words my friend. Much needed!!
Happy to hear ✌️
I found this video to be filled with good intelligence and insight. I am a long-time songwriter. I spent years in Nashville TN, beginning about the time Garth Brooks burst upon the scene. I met and collaborated with many talented people but found the "music business" to be a destroyer of the soul and the enemy of joy in creating music. The music business is prostitution. I refused to sell myself into that prostitution. The greatest joy I found was the high when I heard what was created in the studio as a result of my efforts. It has never mattered who or how many BOUGHT the music. There was joy in the creation. There was always a feeling this is who I am. I don't need to be what others want me to be. The only "mission" I am on is the creative one. My gift has no price tag. I really like this video because it asks "What do YOU want to be and feel coming out the other end of your musical journey?"
Beautifully put friend ♥️

hey jimi, nice peice, i like your focus on its the adventure thats the payment....... kinda like classical its the journey not the destination but a bit more context specific. I never really made anythign with my music and theatre in the conventional sense of the word. Defintiley not as consistent as you either, But i agree id of done it all for the experiences and adventure. If u had offered me the experiences , or money and sucess, id take the adventures. Nice to be reminded of that Id love to understand what motivates you to make these videos, like on a purely personal level. Like what made u first wanna do it?
Hey Sam --- Thanks for the kind words. There are very few professional musicians and songwriters speaking about craft from a philosophical angle. Social media is dominated by a spirit of cynicism and bitter self-centered sanctimony especially among artists. This negative spirit is not only disconnected from the larger truth and purpose of creativity but actually damages an artist's ability to use their creativity for the good of themselves and their communities. I want to be a voice that empowers people without trying to sell them something. I want people to put their creative work in a larger cosmic context that is gentle and kind. I want people to understand that right now is the greatest time in history to make and share art. I want aspiring artists to know that, baked into every attempt to create from the heart is a life lesson and a self-confrontation that builds character as well as humility and empathy. That's why I started the channel. Most of what I say is me talking to myself and firming up what I really believe in my heart of hearts. Hopefully it helps people. I think it would be cool if I just kept making videos until I died and never tried to sell anyone a useless product. I get a kick out of the fact that you and I now share a connection even though I've never met you. I get a kick out of the idea of someone watching one of these videos a hundred years from now and getting inspired and reading this reply to your comment and thinking "....oooh that's spooky." Haha we'll see. Thanks for tuning in friend --- glad the message resonated with you ♥️
I love to hear you both still pursuing music and as always, your positive message in your videos. Keep it up!
Thanks for the positive message. It's a great way to start my week.
🙌
Love your vids, Jimi. Please keep them coming.
Thanks friend ✌️
I don't know if its the uranium tailings in the municipal water supply or the general denial that this is nowhere, but the snobbery and competition within the arts community here is beyond the pale such that there's serious doubt that there is any love of music shared among the majority of gigging musicians, club owners... Notwithstanding the praise I garner at the few paid public appearances offered (for a few moments I guess I was professional), forces, circumstances work against me getting in the door of the waiting room where people wait for a chance at success. But Music bids me play freely, and those who do hear me know. Plus its too late to worry about it and the realization that it always has been is beyond value!
You said something so true in this video: 'Adventure is uncomfortable'. I needed to be reminded of this. As someone with really bad social anxiety, sometimes it's hard to get out there. But the adventure is always worth it in the end. 🎉❤Great video, Jimi
So true --- It absolutely is worth it. It's what we are here to do ♥️
Jimi, thank you so much for your videos and your positive attitude. And you're so right. This was a good reminder for me to not get discouraged and stay on my path, enjoying the journey of creating music, wether or not I will be able to pay my bills with it. Much love <3

What can I give to the world? an amazing track that will get 6 likes on facebook. I ain't giving you shit no more, ungrateful bastards.
The fun bit is understanding the fact, that the illusion activated the instant the expresser bought the idea of fame via expressing their opinion that their opinion could heal the ills of society whilst fattening their wallet or bank account balance during the attempt by sheer nature obviously....as a musician I knew early that no matter who you may be or aspire to become you are only ever as good as your last gig whether live or recorded, it's where science and art meet and an ego lurks around for claps, whistles, and cheers....mugs game for mugs is all.
