It’s crazy, lately I find myself gaining more knowledge from People with small views than people with a lot of views. Goes to show just because you’re not getting millions of views don’t mean you’re not making an impact
I think the main fear of every artist is having to deal with self-promotion. We all enjoy making art. Makes me think that the best art is made by people who don't even expose their art to the world. When you make something that you plan to expose to the world you're already biased and not completely true to yourself (or the world).
Isn't art by definition meant to be viewed? I mean if it's not viewed it's an object? I think it only gets weird when you think too much about it, kinda like porn
Self promotion is the worst. It doesn't even work really anyway. People don't typically want to hear about something you made by you telling them about it. In fact, most will actively refuse it. They want to know they found it themselves. They discovered this cool thing. Not the person who made it marketing it to them.
This was great. Making music has always been the absolute best for me. Purely therapeutic. I frequently say the creative stuff is still just as awesome as it was when I started at ten. It's all the marketing and business stuff that makes it a slog, but I love creating
This was outstanding, Jimi. Exactly what’s been on my mind for weeks now. To validate your point I‘ll quote one of the greatest and most divine artists that ever walked the face of this earth: „Neither a lofty degree of intelligence nor imagination nor both together go to the making of genius. Love, love, love, that is the soul of genius.“ - Mozart
The ego wants to want more than it wants to need. "Desires only lead to happiness. In which happiness is only the after effect of our desires. The wishing for such desire to be fulfiled will only lead to happiness, which is then followed by the empty feeling of desire" ~Markus Arelies (great king of Rome)
This is very interesting to me as someone who used to release stuff that got decent plays and now no one has even heard my favourite songs ive made. I'm compelled to create but didn't really care about anything else
So I turned to Music and said: What if no one is listening to your music? And she said: Well then, you guys would have troubles, you would become distorted by trying to be something that you're not in your need to recover the glory of your relationship with me after usurping my authority as Art, representing yourselves as me and lording it over each other as though you had inspired it . . . yet in the end I go on
I started making music as a 9th-grader in 1983. I can still remember the giddy, child-like, Christmas-morning feeling I got when I finished that first song. 40 years later, I still get that same feeling when I create a new song. I still get excited and giggle. Yes, I want people to like my music, and I would like for it to generate money so I can spend even more time creating it, but if I never make another dime or gain another fan, I will still make music. Just for that feeling that I can't get anywhere else. It's a gift, and I am so thankful for it!
At 66 I create music because I Iove music I share my art twice a month at this open mic I attend & I nolonger chase the hurdles that Soscial Media put before us it will drive you crazy Playing for the love of it🎬
He started this video with what if no one is listening, bruh ain’t no listened to my music for two years and I’m still going strong. You may not get “desired numeric results” in this but that shouldn’t stop you if you truly love it and it’s fun keep going. Keep showing your work/talent.
A long time ago, over 50 years ago, I thought about preparing a piece of music for a piano recital. 6 months of work for a single performance. Personal values weighed heavy on me, like why do I bother? What is important? Is it more important to experience performing for a few minutes and getting a round of applause, or is the journey of learning and perfecting the music what really matters? 6 months of "work" or six minutes of performing. I had that realization very early in life, that the occupation with creating the performance was what really mattered, not the polite applause from people who don’t care about me but are waiting to admire their own little snowflake. I don’t write and produce music for other people, I honestly don’t even do it by choice or ulterior motive. There are periods of time where I cannot help but do it and other periods of time where I just don’t want to. So I follow my whim and bury myself deep when I am compelled to make music. It’s not a job. I won’t let it be a job because I would then learn to hate it.
That's exactly what I went through earlier this year. Spent time and money and passion on a new project and when all was said and done, crickets. I had myself convinced that I had a hit, I could hear them in my head "the best thing I've heard since the 70s!!" "F___ing awesome man!!!" Instead, it was crickets. Spent two months in a depressed funk. I haven't listened to it since. I felt alone in the music world. So, you're saying I'm not alone?
You go back right now and listen to it and never stop listening to what comes to you. Never let anything get in the way of what comes to you because that is the only light in this darkness of mortality. Not beliefs, not opinions, not fame.
Thanks Jimi. I love to interpret songs and there are so many in the world that I would love to interpret. I also love to create songs and when inspired I record and release them. I love to perform and I love to sing and I love being an Artist. I had 9 listeners on Spotify, then 44, then 41, and then 36 and now? I don't know...Last week I decided to stop counting listeners because the most important thing is that I love creating my songs and they are my art babies. Your video was my confirmation that loving my music was enough.
Jimmy 👏 you should change the title this msg is for any artist out there, most suppressed creators by the program will leave a legacy in time, maybe you will not see it, but you left a print a stamp.
I always say that, being creative is about having fun. As a musician myself when I say this the reaction I get from other musicians is No, music is work. Also the amount of musicians I know who don’t support other creatives by buying an album. They want others to support them and buy their music but don’t do it themselves. Even giving a 👍 and leaving a comment on on a RUclips video deserves a return reaction, the ones who don’t are usually the biggest narcissists 🥰
Good points. I think a ton of musicians are so wrapped up in what they are doing, they forget how to be part of the larger community. A big part of what drives a scene is participation and engagement!
Music comes to mind and I begin to notice it, and as the years go by certain themes get developed, and sometimes I notice that some themes follow from others, and some even overlap! One series eventually presented itself as a quartet, and because I could, I built violins, a viola and a cello and learned how to play out the parts in order to test them. A friend, a retired university piano teacher, programmed a couple of the pages into his computer keyboard, and at playback he gazed up at the screen transfixed and repeated: I don't know how you're doing this. I was stunned, for he is well aware of history and composition. I said this stuff just accumulates little by little. I'm not instructed in counterpoint and I hadn't listened to recorded music or attended a concert for thirty years, but the result at playback was successful and delightful beyond belief. And so I turned to Music and said: Wow! The inspiration of the greatness is given and so is not real hard to serve, and is much, much easier than trying to be an artist or a musician.
Stumbling across your videos over the last two days has been profoundly inspiring to me. I am halfway through the process of releasing a VGM pack and this kind of advice is exactly what I need to pull me through the mental barriers that often arise as part of the creative process. Thanks!

35,000 years is how long scientists estimate humans have been making music on the planet. The oldest musical artifacts we have are about that old and are on display at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural history! Mind-blowing...
@@jimiwmusic that depends how you define music. The 35,000 year thing is just because that’s as far back as we have found musical instruments. There is a lot of speculation that even pre human hominids made music. The beat is in us from listening to our mother’s heartbeat in the womb. It’s not unreasonable to think that drumming has been around since before modern humans.
Also Homo sapiens go back to around 250,000 years. According to google “years ago to present: archaic Homo sapiens from 300,000 years ago. modern Homo sapiens from about 160,000 years ago.”
Bro when i was a kid i got jumped and seen death all before my pullups turned to tightys the only flying i knew was getting held out a hotel window lmaooo
I've been writing for 20 years, often with bouts of 18 hour days if I have no job. I watch people make careers out of a single idea, with discographies I could write in a month. It's annoying. My last band had decent numbers, and honestly it did nothing for me. Not just the numbers, but the deep connections made with people who absolutely loved it. I don't care. I want to act like the reason for writing is to inspire people, but I really just don't care. No joy compares with the writing process itself. There are no trophies in releasing things, aside from money and chicks. THOSE are the reasons to release things. I don't need flattery or reassurance.
@@Big_Tough_Guy not at all! I was trying to communicate that there’s strength in your position! Thanks so much for watching and for the kind words ✌️❤️✌️
I have seen big live bands during the 90’s get no traction in 2023 (even with huge live audiences in the 90’s) on the online platforms and smaller unknown artists get traction and never perform live. So what does this even mean in marketing terms? I feel connecting offline is always better.
I get Tolle's point, but if you want to create truly profound art, you'll never get off the endless cycle of wanting. That's how hard creating truly profound art is. Tolle would say top wanting and be happy in your natural state, but inherent in your natural state is curiosity. There's the rub.
100% . It's the paradox of it. Awareness is key IMO. It's as though the conscious egoic-wanting mind trains the body through conditioning, craft and extremely hard work over a long period of time in order to be ready for the flow state that emerges from pure focus. The flow state is the open state that receives and executes the vision once the body is conditioned. Two sides of the same coin, both needed for great art to emerge. Tolle calls this "clock time" vs "awareness." Thanks for the insightful comment ✌️
@@jimiwmusic Me? Work, struggle, suffer then give up. Best to forget everything. Even better, go insane. Now become child like. Now write. If it isn't profound - repeat.
Holy fuck bro. Look at these comments! Hey man, you spoke some truth and sang your song and some people heard it amongst all the cacophony and it resonated in real time. You’ve got the comments to prove it! So, take deeps breaths take your time and take the love that you’re being given from all of us. Stay grounded and keep banging your drum, no matter where the spotlight is shining. I wish you endless equanimity. ☯️

Thank you for creating this video. This is the first time I've heard of you. What you did here is as good as all great art created and people hold dearest to their hearts. You could've made a song about this. I'm glad you didn't, because then I might never have gotten this wonderful message. Please, keep on playing.

Yes, making music is fun, but playing video games is not a passion. If you're honestly trying to make a career from music then u want that fan base, you want to travel the world and be financially free. You want to leave your mark in this life and inspire the people behind you. Playing video games is just self enjoyment, no different than watching porn
If your making music, to make money, then I wouldn't call that music. You should make music because you love to, if you make money in the process coo. 🎉🎉🎉
I love it. Let it like it is, brother !! One of the interesting aspects of making music is that, yes, it's inherently gratifying, but it's not the same thing as the gratification that one gets from eating a peice of chocolate cake. It's not really an instant gratification (other than the smell and touch of something like a guitar.) It requires at least some level of repetative practice, to even learn basic chords. So, it requires a reason for doing this repetative practice. And, this is where things get interesting: The motivation. If the joy of making music were like the joy of eating chocolate cake, it would be a joy that is derived simply, and instantly. But, because of the required dedication to practicing, we have to earn our reward. In short you get the reward, AFTER the work. The cruxt of the matter is: Why are you doing the work ? There is an inherent tension involved with humans and work. We need a reason to do work. If we don't see enough of a reward for our work, we are less inclined to do it. So, if we can't generate attention, accodades or money, what is our reason for doing the work of making music ? Is there enough inherent joy in the process to justify the work ? THIS is our question. Each of us has our own recipe for the kind of joy that we get from doing the work, AND how much work we are willing to do to get to the reward. For some people the inherent joy of playing for themselves and a few other people, is enough to justify a modest amount of time (think of chick singers who know a few chords, but love to sing, and sing beautiful simple songs.) For other people it's a chess game, it's you against yourself, and seeing how far you can advance your skills (think of the lead guitar players who spend endless amounts of time doing repetative licks, in order to master them.) But, in each of these cases, the reward has to justify the work. And, in a world of selfies, and music that sounds like a drum machines, looking for any kind of validation from other people, is a questionable endeavor, after all: They've got pictures of their girlfriends/boyfriends, flowers, cars, etc. to post. They can't bothered seeing your accomplishment (AKA, the result of the work that you have done.) So, as Jimi pointed out so well: The reward for the work that you do, to become accomplished (at whatever level) has to come from an internal sense. Interesting, maybe even covertly to ourselves, I think that is what we've always done. Afterall , making music, takes us to a different place in our heads. It is our own personal magic kingdom. And as Jimi pointed out other people have ways of going to their "magic kindom." People go there, making things our of wood, working on cars, creating food recipes and delicious eats, sewing garments, playing sports. For us, it's making music. So, think of it as therapy. The financial rewards, the attention, the accodates, are uncertain. But, what is certain is the pure enjoyment in working and attaining a skill (at whatever level) that gives us joy. You may not be able to be a rock star, but you do have is the pure enjoyment of persuing, attaiining and enjoying, playing your instrument. And you could do that alone in Siberia, on a desert island by yourself, or in front of a crowd. It's really kind of all the same stuff. Thanks Jimi, for your thought provoking videos. As you squirm and wrestle with reality, we're right there with you. Cheers mate !!
“…you are part of a tradition of millions of people creating art to commune with the devine and express the inexpressible, simply for the love of it, for the joy of it, for the self discovery that results from it.” Fuck, yeah!!!
Epic Truths Brother. Appreciate the pure reflections. Completely agree. That state of resonance and play with the universe is at the core of it all. Its a good reminder for artists and creators of any kind, that even if you are not getting some form of validation from civilization, your creativity is still echoing through the universe. Especially with music via the (“not so subtle”) vibrations . That moment in time and space in which you are moving the energy of your music. You are connected to everything. Even if you don’t think you are . Great perspectives Brother. , I love “sittin with Jimi” Haha and I like the outro with you jamming . Haha sittin with Jimi and Jammin with Jimi . Love it.
The success is in the fact that you are a artist and a creator and simply the doing of it, when you have pure joy and love for it makes you successful. It's the journey not the outcome. I learned through all those mistakes which the ego's false promises pulls up and I just look to the love of creating. Thank you so much ,Jimi. You are a breath of fresh air.

Interesting! You think it’s possible that modern chimps will be composing symphonies if we give ‘em 100,000 years? Chymphonies….
@@ChrisHowlandOfficial I hope so. Haha.
Gotta do it for the love
absolutely
my new fav series
thank you my friend ✌️
Thank you!
wonderful video, i have this issue myself
thanks for tuning in ✌️
Bro when i was a kid i got jumped and seen death all before my pullups turned to tightys the only flying i knew was getting held out a hotel window lmaooo
💪💪
@@jimiwmusic Lol yeah I sounded a bit braggadocious there. btw your channel is great dude. Refreshing change from the usual RUclips slop.
Definitely a combination of both. Creating music career is a whole different beast than just creating. And it's always a gamble.
Tolle calls this "clock time" vs "awareness." Thanks for the insightful comment ✌️
tolle is a conman imo@@jimiwmusic
explain
@@jimiwmusic Me? Work, struggle, suffer then give up. Best to forget everything. Even better, go insane. Now become child like. Now write. If it isn't profound - repeat.
Love it.
Another great rant! Thanks and love from Argentina
As long as the creative force within us shines with innocence and curiosity - no art is without merit or meaning. Great video as always!
🦸🏼♂️
Holy fuck bro. Look at these comments! Hey man, you spoke some truth and sang your song and some people heard it amongst all the cacophony and it resonated in real time. You’ve got the comments to prove it! So, take deeps breaths take your time and take the love that you’re being given from all of us. Stay grounded and keep banging your drum, no matter where the spotlight is shining. I wish you endless equanimity. ☯️
Thank you my friend. It's humbling and overwhelming. Thanks for you kind words. Many blessings to you ☀️
You just saved my fucking soul dude
Yes man! Let's bang the drum!❤
bro this video moved me almost to tears. this channel is a true gift. thank you jimi
and the ending song is a banger
It’s not a what if, they don’t!😁
haha, sadly, often very true
Hey jimi loved the entrance of carrot, loved the tune at the end and loved the open hearts spirit. Thanks coming atcha from the swamps of somerset uk. Inspiring talk. The dance between ego and spirit is a pasa doble every artist knows well. How you have articulated this, sets us free. Blessed be, let our dance be with the devine.
Thank you for creating this video. This is the first time I've heard of you. What you did here is as good as all great art created and people hold dearest to their hearts. You could've made a song about this. I'm glad you didn't, because then I might never have gotten this wonderful message. Please, keep on playing.
So glad it found you, thank you so very much 🖤
This video expresses so much I have been feeling for months. The way you articulate yourself is impressive and is truly poetic. Thank you so much!
Dude, you are out there! 😂😂😂 which is why I followed you for the win!
Blessings from Tanzania🇹🇿
These videos are so important, particularly in light of what the music industry has become along with the “attacks” on genuine creativity and what it means to be an artist. Thanks Jimi🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Only experience leads one to the perspectives you share. Thank you for the encouraging reaffirmations! Keep doing what you’re doing bro!!!
DUDE HOLY FUCK YOURE THE ONE
hahaha thanks for watching my friend ✌️♥️✌️
Feels like I've just been sat with Rick Rubin from an alternative reality based in the future. 🤣
Thank you for your wise words my good sir, just what I needed to hear to get my week started right!

I'm incredibly humbled my friend. Thank you for the kind words. Many blessings to you ♥️
Why play video games if no one is watching? Cause it’s fun…. Same for making music.
Great analogy.
Not really @@yegorbiziuk5290
Yes, making music is fun, but playing video games is not a passion. If you're honestly trying to make a career from music then u want that fan base, you want to travel the world and be financially free. You want to leave your mark in this life and inspire the people behind you. Playing video games is just self enjoyment, no different than watching porn
If your making music, to make money, then I wouldn't call that music. You should make music because you love to, if you make money in the process coo. 🎉🎉🎉
This is why musicians get no respect. Everyone thinks it’s only supposed to be about the fun of it.
It’s a technical term 😂. But seriously, beautifully said Jimi. You’re wise beyond your years.
Thank you for this.
I really love your message Jimmy. I've been needing to hear it my whole life. I choose to carry on the human spirit and bang the drum!
Thank you. This is such an important message, in these times of constant validation; perspective is key.
“…you are part of a tradition of millions of people creating art to commune with the devine and express the inexpressible, simply for the love of it, for the joy of it, for the self discovery that results from it.”
Fuck, yeah!!!
Thankyou brother. I needed to hear this at the right time.
Glad to hear it friend ♥️
This is a message that every artist small, medium or large should hear. 👍
I needed it badly,,hahaha
Nice audio. Really smooth highs.
Thanks so much!
Great perspectives Brother.
, I love “sittin with Jimi”
Haha and I like the outro with you jamming .
Good stuff!
Why keep creating? Cause I Said So! ;-) All content is pretty stunning and refreshing. Best regards!
Thank you Jimi. I’m in this space right now and this is so validating that I’m on the right path.
