It's a senstive subject in my household/not easy to discuss. My other parent has "general" dyslexia. Regardless, thank you for your explanation.

    I have a son that is dyslexic and is in Spanish immersion and is in 2nd grade now. He prefers to read in Spanish now because it is SO much easier to sound out Spanish. I think it has strengthened his language center of his brain, but his reading is way behind other students, however he has an amazing ability to hear, understand both English and Spanish and that is worth it.

    When do you look at parental delinquency as the root cause for delayed learning or developmental milestones rather than the child? And if I didn’t want to jump to diagnosing my child at such an early age, how long is too long to wait to have them evaluated?

    • @AmyNoelonDyslexia
      @AmyNoelonDyslexia 3 месяца назад

      Parental delinquency as a cause for delayed reading or learning would probably included not reading to your children, not playing games with them, not talking to them, etc. I read to my kids as babies every day. Nursery rhymes are also very helpful for developing reading skills. If you don't want to screen your child at an early age, you could just do things that would help them be good readers. You could look at my video "Preventative Intervention for Toddlers" ruclips.net/video/vpbtTMZ7Aaw/видео.html. It's never too late to evaluate a child, but the sooner they are evaluated and start receiving intervention, the better it is received and the longer they have to receive it. Between kinder and 2nd grade would be good.

    Love you videos. My son has severe dyslexia. We went to due process and he’s now doing 1:1 structured literacy. I had my reservations about filing suit and it was incredibly stressful but in my state, that’s just how things work. I could not get the intervention without hiring an attorney. Six months in we are FINALLY seeing actual progress in his reading. He also has speech-to-text and text-to-speech for longer passages of reading and writing. He really can’t stand writing by hand, it’s so hard for him and he turns bright red from effort after just a few lines. We are working on it in a slow and sequential way with his tutor. And we tell him everyday grades reflect the effectiveness of the educators. You are quite smart and you’re in great company with Leonardo Davinci, Albert Einstein, and Dav Pilkey - who is a world famous, best selling author who has dyslexia and 80HD. :)

    Audiologists OWN the auditory system. We are the only professionals qualified to evaluate an individual for auditory processing. The TAPS is a screening tool - not a diagnostic evaluation. Audiologists use a sound booth to properly evaluate ones hearing and auditory processing capabilities. Please don't give advise on something you know nothing about. You quoted Terri Bellis'. research - read her book on APD.

    • @AmyNoelonDyslexia
      @AmyNoelonDyslexia Год назад

      Barton Reading and Spelling program also teaches spelling and has very good results for most people that use it. Spelling, encoding, is a step up from reading, decoding. It requires all the skills needed for decoding- breaking down the parts of words, phoneme awareness, etc. So, if you study spelling with reading I think it is good. I have a video about spelling tests for dyslexics. It is a good skill but needs to be done in tandem with a reading program so that the words go along with the orthographic mapping the student has acquired.

But she's still not reading at grade level and doesn't have basic phonogram skills. I prefer to have reading and spelling in one program, but now I really see the wisdom in splitting them up like AAR. She could learn the phonograms faster then the Barton scope and sequence.

      I personally wouldn't skip any levels. My child is level 5. If they don't need the level, they will fly through it and gain some confidence.

    My district had teachers do a covid learning loss assessment and then offered certain students hours to be provided to students depending on the gap in learning during the distance learning and in person. We had to mail out the offer and the parents had to accept, and contact the district about the hours offered. They have a year to take advantage of the time w certificated teachers.

      I tried a lot of different things with my kids over the years. What has actually helped them has been One on one Structured-Literacy/OG programs. I have a video about what I would do differently with my toddlers and young dyslexic kids if I could do it over. I did those things with my youngest and it has really really made a huge difference.

    I just pulled my son out of the program too, he was his fourth day in 2nd grade. I don't know if he is dyslexic because I haven't gotten him tested but sure he is. He wasn't understanding anything that was being taught. He couldn't read in either language. The only thing he would do is his addition and subtraction , but now that we aren't focusing on Spanish when I have h practice what to right and I tell him the letter he confuse English e with Spanish I. It was my dream for him to learn Spanish too , as growing up my dad never taught me. I was so devasted and crying it didn't work out. But the teachers told me that if he struggled in English it be hard. And I was setting up an evaluation to get help but they said it be only in Spanish. I believe I may have a learning disorder to because I can't understand what I read, and same goes for cooking since I don't understand or get overwhelmed, I can't cook. It's so horrible

      I am sorry you are having a hard time. I hope things get better soon. 2nd grade is a great time to start an Orton Gillingham program like all about reading. My elementary school son he’s on ADHD medication and it helps him at school.

      Make sure you get a psychologist to test him by writing a letter to the school saying you suspect he has a learning disability like ADHD or dyslexia and you want to get him tested.

      I would have them test for autism spectrum disorder as well.

      @@alexisstricker399 you can watch my video about it. It’s a method of instruction. Usually you have to buy a program to do with the child. I like All about Reading. m.ruclips.net/video/tBE_m21_-jE/видео.html
