  • Spelling tests can be a real headache and nightmare for kids with dyslexia. Here are some accommodations and tips to make them useful instead of hurtful. See the resources below.

    Orthographic mapping is going to be a weakness for most kids with dyslexia. The words need to be within their current understanding of phonics. If they fall outside that, they will not remember them because they cannot map the sounds in their brain.
    CONTENT
    Make sure the words are within their current understanding of phonic or orthographic mapping abilities.
    Spelling words that come from the phonemic rules being covered in his reading Intervention program he is working on.
    Adapt the test - Fewer words than the rest of the class. Choose the words you want your child to focus on.
    Do the whole test but don’t get graded on it.
    TEST FORMAT
    Opt out altogether
    Multiple choice
    Partially filled in word boxes, letter boxes
    Use a word prediction software (if they can get close enough to the correct spelling to function in real world)
    GRADING
    Have it not count against their grade.
    Graded by the teacher or the student only. No peer grading.
    Ask the teacher to mark it with a star or stamp each time.
    PRACTICING
    Don’t do the spelling homework assigned if it isn’t effective.
    My son and I build the words with the letter tiles from our reading program and then he copies the words on paper. Then I test him on them that day and each day afterward. I let him choose if he wants to answer orally or written. I review a few words from previous weeks each week.
    “We show him the word on a white board, putting the vowel sound in a different color. We show him the word then hide it. We ask questions, like what was the vowel you saw? What was the sound of the first consonant? What’s the blend? Can you spell the word backwards? Then I have him write it. We started this with short 4 letter words and he can learn his third grade spelling words this way. However, I just know spelling will always be hard so I don’t worry about the grade on this.” - Lisa Struck Fairchild
    “Spelling tests were always a struggle. We never study the challenge words. We focused on 10 words then added more once he got there. We only did 2-3 words a night, it's a lot of repetition. He wrote out the words, we'd then do a mini test the next morning and add more words throughout the week. I always asked for the words to come home on Friday, to start 2-3 words over the weekend. We had prenumbered test sheets in his desk at school. Some weeks he did great, others no so much. If I noticed he was really struggling we'd change our goal. Teaching kids how to break apart words or grouping words with similar sounds helped my son a lot. We never focused on his score, just trying his best. The teacher marking his test with a “star”, or “good job”, “keep up the good work” helped build his confidence. I made my son take them because it's important they challenge themselves with the appropriate accommodations. I didn't want him single out by peers for not taking the test, or him thinking I'd excuse him from everything that was challenging.” Dana Snell-Forness
