.. grinder???😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I'll expand on my answer above. It was a whole lot easier and less deafening to use the cutting torch than to try and cut through nearly 3 dozen 2inch thick steel sections while inside a steel tube that you can't stand up in. The dangers involved with a using a hand held high speed rotating disc angle grinder that will snag and jam constantly when cutting deeply into steel was definitely not our preferred option. We have more large steel cutting jobs similar to this to do and will see if a borrowed plasma cutter will do the job. If not the torch will come out again not the grinder. Thanks for watching and commenting .
@@railwaymaniacs ohhhhhhh ok.. im a car mechanic myself so im more used to using one🤣🤣🤣🤣
The angle grinder is our weapon of choice for many jobs! Over the last few years we have amassed hundreds of hours using them with wire cup brushes attached to removed old paint and rust from 3 lots of frames of Bulleid Pacifics that are under restoration in Kent. We would certainly be lost without them.
Don't forget the Industrial Locos such as Normandy (Bluebell), Irwell (Tanfield)...the list goes on.
Thanks for the comment . My loco knowledge is growing but it has only been about 3 years since I joined the Heritage Railway movement so I have a huge amount of knowledge to try and absorb into my brain that is not sponge like anymore. However, we will be carrying out a lot of work on "Norman" SLL's Austerity 0-6-0 in the coming months so will be filming much of that and posting it on this channel. I will be visiting the Bluebell soon so keep and eye out!
Why have none of English locomotives have head lights, here in New Zealand all our locomotives steam or diesel have headlights ditchlights etc
Hi Pete. It's because us Brits eat plenty of carrots and that help us see in the dark. Seriously though the reasoning behind this is that all of our railways are fully fenced so it is difficult for large mammals to wander onto the tracks and that the trains direction is already set and the train wouldn't be able to stop in that distance within the lighting anyway. Modern trains in Britain are now fitted with lights though.
Loving the fireman in the opening shot giving you a salute as he goes passed. Clearly a professional in charge of his steed.
Not to mention the perfectly timed whistle!
After renaming it, why will the change only be temporary? It was nice to know why the Poles were not included in the parade. It's great that the Poles were finally commemorated.....in public and online, for those who don't believe how valuable they were.
Hi Susan thanks for commenting. 34053 was named after and by the commander of 11 group himself Sir Keith Park. We decided to purchase and restore the loco after it had been a parts donor for another loco. Being named after such an important man in British history we just couldn't let this loco go to waste so restored it from a very sorry small pile of bits. You can see it in our video titled "BEFORE AND AFTER" It will return to honour his legacy next year. I believe there will be some sort of plaque placed on the locomotive to commemorate 303 Squadron after it will be renamed.
If the people wanted to make cash and that is what is needed , may i suggest a 1965 end of NE steam , Tornado as 60145, scotty as salmon trout , get my drift charge 20 quid a pop winner winner chicken dinner put all in york roundhouse with 62005 and other last survivors this would make thousands ,but hey ho what do i know lol
Sounds good to me.
I remember Manston being parked up on Richborough Power Station railway sidings back in the early 1980s. The society that had it could not afford to restore it fully. So they did a cosmetic job on it with marine ply
Money is always hard to find, and progress can't be made without it. Sometimes a cosmetic makeover is done to prove that the project is ongoing and not abandoned. Luckily we completed Manston and it was one of the biggest stars at the recent "Strickly Bullied 2" event at Swanage that was featured in the railway press. Thanks for commenting.
Another great video. It must have been a wonderful day for many reasons. If only I was a little closer . . . I have always admired the Poles - and learned to be careful when drinking with them.
Huge respect for the Poles. I'd join them for a drink but my tolerance for alcohol is not good so they would definitely win the drinking battle as well!
Great to see the loco up and running and renamed to honour the Polish airmen. I remember seeing the loco parked at Wilton on the WSR for years as just a boiler, chassis and 6 driving wheels. I believe it was used as spares donor to rebuild Braunton.
It certainly had a lot of pieces missing but we managed to restore it, and it ran for its full ticket and an extension. It has just returned after a major overhaul and looks fantastic!
Yes, that exotic holiday location Eddystone! A remote lighthouse 14 miles off Plymouth, in the English Channel!
It has a lovely 30 room hotel and a lovely beach with palm trees 🤣

We have restored this unrebuilt one named 257 Squadron that is currently at the Mid Hants Railway and also one named Manston that is at its home on the Swanage Railway. Lovely vid. Lovely people. I’m British but God bless Poland. And it’s servicemen and Woman.
Is it not possible to choose a locomotive to be permanently renamed in honour of the Polish Airmen.Who fought in the Battle of Britain. To remove the name of Keith Park in honour of the Polish Squadron for a year is a great tribute. But surely there must be a Loco that can receive this name.
You have just given me an idea...
@@railwaymaniacs You're going to build a completely new one from scratch like Tornado?
@@TheLoachman No, we like to preserve loco's to stop them being lost forever. It's also a lot less financial and manpower burden to work with what we have than to build new. Though building new does have its advantages. We have built tenders from new in the past and will be doing so again soon.
@@railwaymaniacs Roger. I am extremely curious about your idea . . .
@@TheLoachman I am going to mention it the directors first and see what they think.
Brilliant video amazing to see so many people enjoying the re naming of this beautiful locomotive keep up your amazing work and videos Bernard
Thanks Bernard. It was a great ceremony, enjoyed by our Polish friends and ourselves. Hopefully we will see them again next year if not sooner.
Keith Park 34053 was based/allocated at Exmouth and Salisbury so they were all over. The West Countries were also in the east and BOB's were in the west there was no rhyme or reason. Edit: I saw a naming soon after from behind the crowd sat in front of the name, notice the polish marking is very much like the Limited Clearance signs on the railway today.
You are correct on all accounts.
When I saw the thumbnail, I thought it was meant to be an incendiary video asking what the point was. I'm really pleased that isn't the case! PHF are brilliant guys with a great many based in Blackpool. Great to see this video explaining it all! Side note, it was strange seeing Goring on a nameplate at the Duxford Airshow earlier this year.

Great to see these locos. back in working order. I saw all the Bulleid Pacifics during my ‘gricing’ days & had runs behind many. I live in South Africa now but when i visited the U.K. in 1988 l had a run behind 34092 Marylebone to Sheffield Midland & return in June & 34105 Alresford to Ropley in July brought back good memories. Keep up the good work!
It sounds like you love these machines as much as us! Why not become a shareholder in Southern Locomotives Ltd and maybe next time you visit a railway be a welcomed guest on the footplate for a ride down the line?

@@caiohenriquedeoliveirahach5928 Rebecca is based on this steam locomotive.
I believe these engines should retain their original names and numbers. Why would you wish to give a loco a false identity
Hi David. I do understand. Our next video explains the reason behind the renaming in some length and also explains that it is for one year only. Thus far this temporary name change to show our gratitude to our Polish and Czech friends whos countrymen helped enormously during the Battle of Britain has been very successful.

Will 34058 Sir Frederick Pile be mainline certified once it is restored from scrapyard condition to running condition?
@@Shark30006 it might well be. One step at a time.
Why did the hoist carry the boiler to rest atop the chassis/drivers then back again ? Why wasn't it then bolted to the chassis and restoration continue from there ? What am I not comprehending ?
The film showed the lift from two different angles. One was shown followed by the other. Hope this helps.
good luck !
Thanks Alex. We need all the luck we can get!
I hope that tube plate was scrap and not sacrificed to get the regulator valve out?
The tube plate was indeed condemned long before the hole was cut in it.
Three members of this class have yet to steam in preservation: 34010 Sidmouth, 34058 Sir Frederick Pile and 34073 249 Squadron
What year will 34058 Sir Frederick Pile be in working condition?
We have much work to do, hurdles to overcome and funds to raise along with restoring and overhauling other loco's so putting target dates on projects is difficult as priorities change from time to time.
Hi my name is Marley
Welcome to the channel buddy
@@railwaymaniacs I went to duxford airshow yesterday and you gave me a a part of sir Frederick pile for free so I would like to thank you.
Cheers, let me know what you think of channel. What is you favourite video so far?
I owned a share in a loco many moons ago , sadly I had to sell it. I do wish SOMEONE would take the West Country loco 34105 'Swanage' AWAY from the Watercress line and restore her PRIORITY!!! I mean it could run ON SWANAGE STEEL and be a real flagship. I was hoping that one day I would see her in steam again. sadly I have said this for 30 odd years and STILL she is left rotting slowly away under a tarpaulin with Watercess KEEP saying 'we will restore her'. I know now I will never see the day she is in steam IN FACT I think shes too far gone now due to lack of interest. People ONLY WANT the 'famous' locos. My late father and his brother told me they traveled behind SWANAGE many time in service. If only i could win the lottery I would buy her and start the work myself I am a lifetime engineer! I'm going to start a 'go fund me' page to rescue SWANAGE please keep an eye out.
It takes many thousands of hours and hundreds of thousands of pounds to restore a loco to steam again. There are a (very) limited amount of resources available to owners/restorers/railways nowadays to carry out this type of work.
It is correct what my ancestors always used to say........the lightest thing on the railway was always the pay packet.
I have heard that a few times, usually when a number of us are lifting something heavy...the more weight you lift in your job the lighter your pay packet is.
Damn I wish I was there to help (btw I have no money I’m sorry)
You can help for free just by watching our videos, commenting on them, giving the thumbs up, talking to people about heritage railways, and if you can visit them and go for a ride.
wow😂
Have you fellas never heard of "PlusGas"?????
No what is it?
@@railwaymaniacs In the UK it is used to free rusted joints (think disassembling exhaust systems) - over here on t'other side of T'Pond (USA) the nearest thing I found to PlusGas is Kroil (penetrating oil) good luck! Nice video, thanks for sharing, I'm surprised that no one else has mentioned PlusGas!
We have been using penetrating oil , usually WD40 that has been regularly applied for weeks (sometimes years) beforehand to help try to release parts. You have to remember that this locomotive was last used 60 years ago and has sat outside rusting away since then. I'm surprised that most of it can and will be used again.
Great work by you all
Thanks so much. It's always nice to be appreciated.
Why didn't you torch the nuts up top, instead of cutting the plate???? That seems to me as a much easier, and better repair , than torching the hi tensil steel plate.
All fixings on top were removed. The problem was the 4 fixings that were almost impossible to get to that are underneath the regulator were totally seized. These inside fixings attach the unit to the steam pipe inside the boiler had to be heated. We could have cut the regulator body to pieces to remove it but this would have destroyed the unit. Though the unit has a break in the casting this maybe repaired. The front tubeplate that we cut an access hole through had already been condemned. We will show more of this in a future video. Thanks for commenting.
In the 1980's and early 90's I visited Barry scrap yard often and have many pictures of my then young children in, around and on the remaining locos; most of which it seems were Bulleids. It is amazing to me that these rotting hulks have been saved and I take my hat off to all of you hard working dedicated enthusiast. Your tenacity in the face of such daunting tasks is a wonder. Many thanks. Now I must tear myself away and focus on the work that I should be doing if only it was half as interesting!!!!
Many thanks for commenting Peter. We would be interested in seeing and maybe even showing some of your photos in a future Railway Maniacs episode as I'm sure there are many viewers interested in seeing them. Myself and many other enthusiasts never visited Woodhams at Barry (some of my colleagues did thankfully) but have seen some sad images of once proud engineering marvels looking unwanted, unloved and waiting to be culled.
@@railwaymaniacs Hi thanks for your response and interest. Sadly most of my pictures are currently stored and not likely to see daylight for another year or two. That said I had a root around this evening and found 4 x 35mm slides all, I believe of 35009 Shaw Savill. They have an interest to me as family pictures but probably not of so much interest to you? There's very little loco to see in any of these … 3 slides are of two children sitting on a buffer beam with gaping door-less smoke-box above and one of them standing by a front driving wheel and cylinder...like I say not a lot of loco to see. There might be, I suppose, an interesting sociological point though as they show how in the 1980's it was still possible to just wander into and around un-fenced scrap yards? I can't imagine that would be possible anywhere in the UK today? Anyway clearly it seems I knew how to treat my kids a good wholesome day out!!!??? Best wishes.
Feels like forever since your last video 😂 great to see you back! Great progress! Also thank you for such an amazing renaming ceremony yesterday for 053!
It has indeed been a long time since the last video. Too long really.
