I think that Watkins looked at his best when he knew he was going to play no matter what and that it doesn't take much for his confidence to get knocked. Knowing that he will likely come off after 60 mins and also (maybe) worrying that Duran might score when he hasn't could be playing on his mind. There doesn't seem to be too much love lost between the two players either and Ollie might be someone who wilts under that kind of competitive rivalry rather than raising his game because of it. Who knows... Whoever starts though, they CANNOT play together unless it's a hail Mary situation with 10 mins to go. It completely destroys our style of play. The difference in the performance against Spurs after Rogers was subbed (as you mentioned) was very stark. Not only in terms of how we attacked, but also defensively. Rogers blocks easy balls into midfield and once he'd gone off Spurs immediately had a ton of extra space in the centre of the pitch. If Morgan had stayed on the pitch it would have been a much closer scoreline, IMO. Hopefully the two weeks have given us time to regroup and Unai can make some tweaks. If we get two good results and performances against Palace & Juve then we could be heading into December in a much better frame of mind. UTV!

Great content as always Frankie. What's your thoughts on the changes being made, when we chasing a game. Putting Duran up top with Watkins makes us weaker imo. I would like to see mattsen and Ned come on as wing backs, with 20 mins to go, both are young and fit, so could provide threats going fwd as well as make recovery runs. That would still have us solid at the back with 3 center half's. It also means we are not disrupting the midfield 3, and once Watkins is spent then put JD on for him, and Buendia as a 10 for Rodgers. Putting JPB and Bailey on again doesn't work as both are low on confidence and keep taking the safe option. That's no good when we chasing a game, and we need players to impact the game.

I think the 'hurting' of players was a repercussion of Chases challenge on bentacour last year. Put him out for 8 weeks in his 3td game back from a 10 month injury. The south Americans were after blood

I've noticed the last 4-5 games we're far too slow at bringing the ball outand passing to Emi under pressure is in my opinion a no no,Just get the ball out quicker,we are being found out....

Girlfriend said I'd got a face like a bucket of smashed crabs after that performance, I'm assuming she means the Villa game and not something else. Terrible second half today, dare I say it almost reminiscent of Gerrard football. The passing seemed far too pedestrian, nobody wanted to try and beat a player, we kept trying to walk the ball in the net. As soon as Maddison stepped up to take that free kick I said this is gonna be a goal. Despite our current doom and gloom I am quite buoyant that we'll get a result against Brugge. UTV !!!!

Our defense is shocking this season. If we play like that next Saturday liverpool will batter us. Worried for the brugge game on Wednesday night. Knew this bad patch was coming. Currently our style hinders our wingers. Personally think reverting to a box midfield and tighten things up. Today 2nd half was abysmal

Just like last season whenever our players get Abit extra rest they don't perform when they come back in & it's backfired big time getting knocked out of the cup,also a pathetic effort overall today & now 2 tough away games with Club Brugge/Liverpool with confidence low, dreadful tbh..... up the mighty Villa!!! ☹️👎

Say it how it is that second half was a bottle job we're was the fight and grit to many passengers no leadership when the going got tough who stood up. Midfield went missing to.The defence is an issue Frankie we keep saying it school boy goals week after week Unai needs to address it mate it's holding us back subs needed to come on early to. Need to take our chances and kill games. Might not be popular, but we have grown out of McGinn.

Tough one to take. Not sure why Spurs and Toon are Emery Kryptonite but they just get on top of us and keep pounding. Feel like something has been wrong up top all season. And defensively we are just conceding too many, especially from our own errors. Last year we were tired, this year we were rested and forwent the League Cup for this. Should have had fire in our bellies ready to avenge last year. Horrible.

Been coming, All very poor ,mcginn was terrible, Onana was good in 1st half. Watkins is not a top striker.

Emery doesn't care that we have gone out of the cup. His priority is the premier league and champions league. Good to see bouba and Tyrone back. We need to get rid of Diego Carlos he is gonna cost us results this season. Not good enough to play for villa.

Thanks for the match review. I felt we struggled once Mcginn went off and then had no good options from the bench. The game however will be remembered for the return of Mings and Bouba who were excellent. UTV

There are a lot of people saying we gave up this chance to progress. Look what happened to Palace they lost two of their best players in that game and our B team pushed them pretty well and statistically did out play them. It was the smart thing to do even tho it is rather upsetting. Palace drew arsenal away anyway so we would have to put out a strong team there too and thats more risk to the key players. Its harsh but putting out the B team was smart imo.

I did not see the match, but listening on Villa TV it seems we were unable to convert the chances we created. Need to become ruthless and clinical! In the list of competitions this ranks 4 out of 4.Villa have much higher aims i.e .top 5 and at least quarter finals of C L . Kamara. and Mings were very good Bailey still well off it and has one trick ,Philogene was poor but there is defo a player there.

Well that was bloody disappointing. I was expecting a bit of a odd topsy turvy match but disappointed in the blarness of it, agree with all you said so nothing to add... On the trophy question - wld love one this season of course (FA Cup please tooth fairy 🧚‍♀️) but I want us to excel in CL and League more as it helps to solidify our overall growth. This season we really need to concentrate on our form consistency, our game plays, improve the squad further. We're ahead of schedule, lets keep it that way UTV.

It's ALWAYS worth doing these reviews, I honestly don't think Emery was too bothered about this cup, you could see it with the team choice and subs on the bench. There were moments when we looked good and moments when we looked bad. Ultimately it's bought us a little more breathing space in the fixtures list, I do hope he goes strong in the FA Cup though, we're still top of the Champions League and 4th in the Prem, I'll take that. The Spurs game this weekend is where we don't want to slip up, I'm going for a Villa 2 - 1 win. UTV!!!

Unai’s starting 11 and subs bench clearly stated how much he didn’t value the carabau cup!, it’s risky for sure as there will be a lot of upset Villans. Me personally… I don’t care, there are no mid season friendlies and a lot of injured and young players got minutes that they otherwise wouldn’t. This cup is Palaces only realistic chance of silverware, while for us it’s more of an impediment to our league and UCL campaign!. We’ll win cups when we have a complete team that is able to deal with both domestic and European football UTV

Ten mins left to play and Martinez continually punted the ball up field. We failed to get possession on every occasion and the ball simply kept coming back forcing blocks/saves scrambles etc. Definition of madness to keep doing same thing repeatedly and expecting different result. Particularly as the clock wound down last minute or two should have played possession football. The play was probably at the instruction of Martinez and it was awful judgement. We were in the lead and continually played like we were panicking and chasing which is exactly what we DID NOT need. Silly to give away 2 points like this. We played well most of the game. The reason why we were giving silly fouls away because Martinez put us under unnecessary pressure.

Let's buy a new RB, please!! Either Devyne Rensch or Arnau Martinez! Do we sell Carlos and take a new younger CB?

The last three premier games when we have scored first we have failed to finish the job off. Villa fans like to blame Matty cash for our troubles but what has uni and monchie done about it , uni let Ashley Young go and never replaced him so have a go at them , I see merano is playing in a better defence now than what we are.
