Decal removal, wet sanding, compound buffing, and polishing to bring the gel coat back to life. Always consult the wife before posting ;) He left out a few key details with wet sanding. 1. Is it necessary.....YES! I would love to skip this step, but it is a must if you want your color popping and your oxidation completely removed. 2. Wash the boat with dawn dish soap and soft bristle brush firs...

You sir have created an entry point for water using a latex based caulk for a below water application, say goodbye to the transom. try using toughened epoxy next time.
Also get new below the waterline calk or sealant not that DAP shit!
ski nautiqe? terrible lol i have 3 malibu skiers. all have nice 2 axle trailers. new engine new stringers interior and the cost of a new ski boat is over 100 grand and they do not come closed bow. i paid from 3500 to 5500 for them. i love them a great inboard. look it is safer and more fun than a new one. i take the ski poles out. since i do not use them for skiing. new bimini tops new interiors i think maybe i had like including purchase price in one around 10 grand. i like playing with them. right now i am putting a 700 hp blown small block in one, had to cut a hole in the top of the engine cover but damn it sound good and is fun on the lakes. i just cruise around.
Who did your upholstery ?
And a job well done! I'm starting mine soon, will post updates!
Good luck with it!
Well, damn. This was awhile ago but new to me... welcome to the club. Sounds like my life. I've got an 84 nautique for free. I know it has a good engine, because I helped install it from the crate... 12 years ago. Since? It run maybe 2 hours. BUT... buddy moved out of state, left it to me. Came over to get it and no one pulled the plug. It was full to the transom with water. We'll see what happens this winter!
🫣 noooo. Good luck with that. I’ve had terrible luck with this engine.
Soo.... Would you do it again?
I would, but I would be far more selective about the old boat I’m buying. Good engine is a must!!!
3m eraser wheels takes stickers right off! The Amazon knock offs work great too
Just started work on an ‘89-when I saw your playlist I made sure it was the 2nd one I watched. Inasmuch as mine currently has no engine, I breathed a sigh of relief. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Good luck!
How much you get it fir
$4,000
Just found your channel, you do some great work!
Thank you
Where did you find that splined hub adapter? I have an 86 and would like to upgrade to an NRG steering wheel but they are all 6 bolt and I can’t find any information about shaft size or spline
I bought it off Amazon. Not super happy with it, but it replaces.
I have a 1991 Mastercraft Tri-Star which I purchased off the showroom floor in 1992. Indmar 351 engine. It's great.
Whats the name of those seats they look great
what is the color of the carpet?
We have a ski Natique
My son and I just finishing a ‘78 Stars & Stripes. But we had to replace stringers too. We kept the fiberglass for stringers in place, just cut the top off, the used seacast and poured it in. That stuff is great. Also used coosa board for decking. Should be good for more than another 45 years. We’ve owned it since the 80’s. My son wanted to keep and restore it because he has so many memories growing up being pulled by that boat. 351 is amazing.
That’s awesome. Thanks for sharing that.
That is great. I have a '98 sport nautique that is getting a bit rough. I think u may have inspired me to bring it back to New.
Plenty of videos of what to do (or not to do) on this channel.
Maybe add a bead blaster to your Christmas list.
He didn't want to use Marine Corp because it's $45 a tube
Why use drill for such short screw😅 safer by hand stop being lazy😅
Amazing vid! Thanks for posting
Great Video, Thank You! 1) Thanks for speeding up the tedious parts! 2) Thank you for getting your kids involved in the process! My Dad had us kids rebuilding cars in the good old days. I rebuilt my first motor at 16 yrs old! Great memories.....
Thanks
Get you some good caulk 😂😂
We had a 79 ski nautique that my parents had when i was born in the 90's and we bought a 94 sport when i was about 10. We got rid of the 79 and my dad found it 15 years later at a consignment dealer. It was in really rough shape because it sat outside and he wanted 5k for it. I went and looked at it and all the freeze plugs were out and every summer I'd have the dealer call the guy and try to buy it. After about 4 years i finally talked him down to 2k and i was gonna pull the cash out and the dealer called me and told me that he didn't have the title so they couldn't sell it. There was a bunch of old paper work when we owned it that i wish i would have kept. Anyways it's always cool seeing someone restore them! I bought another 79 ski and my dad has a 83 ski and my older brother has a 2002 super Air. Nautiques are awesome boats!
Thanks for sharing. I bought an 02 Air Nautique a couple years ago. Good boat.
Great video, thank you for posting. Could you post the name of the site where you purchased the pinstripe?
I grew up on a 78’ Nautique and later owned a 96’ Nautique. Would love to own a classic Nautique again some day. Great job on your boat.
❤❤❤❤❤ we've owned two nautiques and '74 and an '86. Loved them!!!!!
Any recommendations for getting the Christmas tree studs to fit back in? I am having trouble with them.
I didn’t do the upholstery. I do know that any work I’ve ever done with Christmas tree studs doesn’t work unless you buy new ones.
Shouldn’t do your fiberglass like that you’re just carrying around a big ass mess. Put your resin on where you’re gonna put your fiberglass mat then put your fiberglass mat on it and then add a top layer of resin to it by rolling it in otherwise you’re just making a freaking mess everywhere.
I’m doing a 73 nautilus presently total floor restoration all foam out and all wood out
Wow, good luck.
LOL Rockauto has always been good to me but receiving 2 different rotors is rather strange. I would have sent it back and gotten a replacement.
I’m restoring a 1979 and really like how this turned out, how has it held up and where did you order your carpet from?
It held up great. My wife ordered it and can’t remember where she got it from. Sorry.
I wish every older Ski Nautique had someone like you to find them and bring them back to life. They are truly amazing boats and become life long passions for many people. Your kids will remember this boat forever.
Thanks so much!
Thank you for this video very helpful! I can move my front wheel side to side when its up on the jack with about 2 inches of play on each side!
Check the idler arm and pitman arm as well
Hi, Great job on therestauration. I have a 87 aswell witch i am working on right now. I see you remounted the swimplatform, dit you work the original holes, or did you use other bigger bolts to mount it? Im afraid to use the same holes and bolts beacause it might break?
I didn’t rework them. With the marine caulk, it went back together just fine.
Is that observer seat plastic base sold somewhere?
Not that I know of. Sorry
Great video, You save a lot of money doing it yourself. I did the same after calling a repair shop and they wanted 400.00 per axle. I told them that you have got to be kidding me.
Crazy. I will only take a vehicle somewhere after I try and absolutely cannot fix it myself.
Good for you being patient and teaching your kids!
Can you share the link to the packing?
Those are such cool boats. Growing up at the family lake house in NC I was always jealous of the neighbors who had Ski Nautique's. My brothers and I had to settle for an old Starcraft.
I had the same childhood. That’s why I did this. Your turn.
O man this is my next step (all decals) and I almost want to pay someone but I've shelled out enough already lol
You’ve got this! It’s a satisfying process.
Was it a v8 or 6
351 V8
The shaft coupling that has the square head bolts you tightened needs to be safety wired. That's why they have the hole drilled in the head of the bolt.
I've watched most of your videos, Great job on the boat. What roughly does it cost to get that upholstery replaced? I want to do the same thing, found a few good candidates to refit.
Just a thought . To take care of the bend in the dash when fixing with 3 holes not just two , different washer ( grommets) thicknesses or differing amounts of washers would take care of this , rather then bending the base plate . Loved all your postings. Inspirational. All the best .
Good thought
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Nicely done Sir and Ma'am.
Thanks!
Today is my turn 😮
How did it go?
@@MakeSkiBoatsGreatAgain I replaced only the Bearing. Due to budget. Still making nose. I believe the Hub assembly is what I Really need.
I just bought a 1990 Ski Brendella and am afraid of losing my shirt on the same amount of work. It has 633hrs and needs new upholstery, and a water pump, exhaust manifold and transmission work. Any advice would be great.
Can’t help with the transmission, but watch the videos on my channel. Lots on upholstery and video on water pumps
Freakin awesome found this channel. Hoping i can document my restoration as good
What boat are you working on?
