The Best Tool to Improve Your TTRPG Game (Spoilers: It’s Fiasco!)
I'd argue that science fiction has a spectrum from future fantasy to hard sci-fi. Star Wars is at the extreme end of future fantasy, The Martian is close to the extreme of hard sci-fi, and Star Trek is right in the middle. But - it's largely semantics and debatable.
I like skilled because say the class has things or pre set skills that hold it back I can just make a better version with a skill based system. Or if I want to make a class but specifically a specialist like a fighter but he’s an expert at dungeon crawling a fighter specifically using anti magic, or a charismatic barbarian. Of course classes are better for a beginner
How is a single d20 swingy? If you've set a target no. of 15 you're telling the player she has a 30% chance of success. How is that swingy? Yes, a d20 is chunky, if that's a problem for you, roll percentiles.
I liked the mixture of general advice on design intermingled with some specific content for this one. You should do more like this.
Mutants and Masterminds is the absolute win. It's flexible, robust, and easy to learn. Apparently, my 10 year old daughter can do calculus, lol. The tables throughout the book mean you don't need to do more than basic addition and subtraction. It has one die (d20). Crunchy it most definitely is not.
The initiative system I made for a few games I'm working on makes initiative a "pass/fail" test for players and enemies. Players who passed go first, in any order they decide. Then enemies who pass go second in any order the GM decides. Then players who failed go in any order, and then Enemies who failed. You roll every round but this makes it quick and I like players working together to decide what order they act in for teamwork. The DC for the initiative test is usually the same but more difficult encounters or being ambushed raises it.
Creative build! I love tinkering with mechanics and homebrewing. Keep up the great work!
My D&D group and I started writing homebrew archetypes about a year or so ago! We've got a few releases on DM's Guild under the name The Arcane Syndicate, the most recent being a supplement with a new archetype for each class, including the barbarian. Speaking of, a machinist barbarian is a really unique idea! I can't say I've heard of anything like that before
Thanks! I liked the idea of making a tech based barbarian because it feels like that is one of the classes that if you do a high-fantasy/high-tech setting can get lost in the weeds I also thought about a Circle of Alloy Druid but never got past the concept phase
Can't wait to go over this on the big stream! 🤠
We can’t either!!!
But I already wear glasses… 🤓
Clearly you need better glasses
but the bookshelf looks so crisp and clear!
@@WiTcharles It seems like your frames aren't large enough to handle all the objects in the video. You'll just need to glue a second pair of glasses to the first to handle the visual overflow.
@ ahhh, there’s the solution!
Tell us about your own homebrew in the comments below!
Working on my own Skill based, D10 dice pool system. Thanks for the great vid guys!
Marvel Multiverse can do homebrew campaigns with all original characters too. And the X-Men supplement added a "Getting Schooled" optional ruleset that gives incremental stat/power increases, making it even easier to do a campaign and feel like you're character is improving.
Was not aware of the X-Men supplement. Will have to check it out
FYI, I like Brandersonian as an adjective. His output is ridiculous, and deserves a ridiculous adjective.
Another option is Savage Worlds with the Super Powers Companion.
DC20 and Discworld are the two I'm looking forward to
"Appeal to their tastes." Got it
