Samson and the Gates of Gaza
Episode 17: The peculiar story of Samson’s escape from Gaza raises interesting questions about historical and mythological aspects of the Samson narrative. According to Old Testament professor Jack Sasson, it is also a key example of deliberate exaggeration in the Bible.

    That Psalm 45 connection is amazing! It's a little wild to think that while priests and scribes were grumbling over their concerns with redacting a dusty old historical scroll, other Judeans not even beyond the Temple walls could have been happily reciting the Song of Queen Jezebel. I'd even like to think she was something of a culture hero reminding the descendants of Omride-era Israelites of when their people even called themselves kindred with the great city of Tyre. Thanks again for all the wonderful content and reading folks' comments!

    A few things to consider: Nimrod is mentioned as the one who created the city of Babel in Genesis 10:10. The Tower of Babel story in Genesis 11:9 clearly states that the tower was located in the city now named Babel. Additionally, 1 Chronicles 1:10 explicitly mentions that Cush is the father of Nimrod. Despite being written by different authors, Genesis and Chronicles confirm the same information.

    • @InquisitiveBible
      @InquisitiveBible День назад

      Bible scholars universally recognize that the author of Chronicles used Genesis as one of his sources, often copying it verbatim. For example, Dr. Sara Japhet (Hebrew University of Jerusalem) in her outstanding commentary on I and II Chronicles (2013) writes: "In the framework of I Chron. 1-9, the Chronistic representation of the entire history of Israel prior to David (or to the death of Saul), I Chron. 1 represents the book of Genesis, from which all its material is taken. "The selection of passages from Genesis follows clear principles: the source used is the 'genealogical blocks' of Gen. 5.10-11; 25; 35-36; the recording of the material adheres as closely as possible to the original order, and its adaptation conforms to strict rules and methods. The Chronicler seems to have combed the book of Genesis for its genealogical material, from which he systematically borrowed." (p. 52) So the Chronicler displays no independent knowledge about Nimrod. He simply copies and trims down the already-brief story found in Genesis. Prof. Leslie C. Allen (Fuller Theological Seminary) notes in his recent commentary on Chronicles: "In terms of sources, the Chronicler has drawn on genealogical material in Genesis, from chs. 5, 10, 11, 25, and 36, sometimes following it verbatim, even keeping narrative asides, and at other times abridging it." (p. 26) Regarding Babel, the fact that Nimrod is presented as a founder of numerous cities in chapter 10, but chapter 11 presents us with a world in which nobody exists outside of Babylon, is a serious chronological problem if you try taking the text as literal history.

    A shepherd should not sleep with sheep lest they become like unto sheep dumbe, easily led, docile, unable to sheer themselves or defend against jackals. Be not sheep with head to the ground eating grass. Shepherds must not lose speech with humans. Shepherds that behave as sheep in the fields lose human habits and mores. Shepherds have a staff. Sheep do not. They have a shepherd. If the shepherd be lame or a lambe of god. Shepherds must withdraw from flock to attend to their own needs body, mind, spirit and soul. One cannot always hear the still voice of God within thru the endless bleating of mindless sheep. Filling your ears with their endless blather. Tasty grass bite chew more hungry tasty. Thank God for Loss of understanding animal speach. It was a blessing Animals live and think animal things. Hearing these. Would drive humans mad. Humans think of past and future. Animals do not. Also if humans could hear animals how could anyone kill them to eat them As Baalams Donkey spoke what good goes there Animals can see what we cannot. For humans cannot see what they cannot think of or believe in. Beor son of Bella clearly saw the burning spirit of angel before Balaam saw for he did not believe in power of host until he saw with his own eyes the fire of god. Known as z Beor means divine fire The Baghdadi historian Al-Masudi said in his book Meadows of Gold and Mines of Gems that Balaam ben Beor was in a village in the lands of Shem (Canaan), and he is the son of Baura (Beor) ben Sanur ben Waseem ben Moab ben Lot ben Haran (PUT), and his prayers were answered, so his folks asked him to pray against Joshua ben Nun but he could not do it, so he advised some of the kings of the giants to show the pretty women and release them toward the camp of Joshua ben Nun, and so they did, and they (the Israelites) hurried up to the women and the plague spread among them and seventy thousand of them died. So balaams cyrse by sending infected whores into israel where they enticed izrs to die og di mi I think the infected whores moral of this balaam story HAS BEEN LOST Under the marvel of talking donkey Has made mockery of true lesson

    The truth is the world was one with one language before the division into different areas, So genealogy does not necessarily spell out sequence of play on events. Instead it tries to summarize and capture based on descendants. So if they were in one place according Genesis 11:1, it also means when they scattered, Nimrod started his building of cities and leading those that happened to fall in line with same languages as he had. So he probably did not follow the Kushites that went to create the land of Kush. Thats a theory. Its clear that not all Kushites went to the land of Kush. Another theory could be based on the Assumption that they went to their different portion of lands after the flood before tower of Babel (which is unlikely). They below could apply... Nimrod could have been from Kush and he could also have migrated away from the land of Kush. 1 Chronicles 1:10 reiterated that cush was father to nimrod and that cant be a coincidence since Chronicles was written by different author (likely Ezra) to Genesis. Both accounts including Micah acknowledge the he founded cities away from the land of Kush which explains possible migration away from Kush. And the name Kish could also be a variant coined by Nimrod because of his father name. Looking at the carved image at 7:38, that face look more like a Kushite with the thick nose and lips.

      Taking the story so literally doesn't work in historical terms. Nubia (Cush) was already a prosperous civilization in 2500 BC, at which time the Tower of Babel story hadn't even happened yet if we go by Ussher's chronology.

      @@InquisitiveBible hmm, i guess i believe Biblical record. When it was said that the whole world was in one place (tower of Babe) I'm believing there were not so much one earth, given the fact that Nimrod was said to have been born 90somthing years post-flood, which makes sense since he is meant to be the grand son of Noah. Truely people were not so much (may be they ere just 1,000 to 3,000). And its not bad to assume that people had not yet scattered Remember it would be normal for Noah to live with his children and grandchildren within the same region, i doubt if they were quick to scatter and leave to explore other land region. So it makes sense if they all went to form their own civilization after the language differences scattered them (post babel). I believe that when cush and other civilization started. So i guess Babel should be older then Cush. Because it is on record that Babel was 100 years post Flood so no kingdom would be existing before the flood. yes i guess there could be confusing with the actual dates and years, but it is confirmed that Babel is about 100 years post Babel (a known fact) so something have to add up.

      again i believe some dates may not be so accurate, for instance the believe that Bable was built some 4000 year ago may not be accurate, i believe it was earlier than that probably closer to 4,600 years ago, but i actually get your whole point.

      In archaeological terms, YHWH does indeed appear to have emerged as a deity of the southern Canaanites - specifically a tribe called the Shasu. Even the Exodus narrative makes it clear that the name YHWH was previously unknown to Israel's ancestors, even though local Canaanites like Jethro venerated YHWH. I'll do a future video discussing all the evidence and how to interpret it. What you believe as a matter of faith is up to you.

    You’re reading way more into the text than that’s actually there. The people you’re quoting and getting your information from are frauds and pseudo intellectuals. They argue that an absence of evidence is evidence of absence. You’re giving credence to the idea that just because one book of the Bible does not include a particular detail from a story/ narrative, then there’s mistakes or that people are colluding to shape the narrative in a way that is dishonest or misleading. You can’t just make claims like “well because this author didn’t include it in their book, then it’s obviously a later invention added in”. The entire video is like this. Just fringe theories that are trying to be provocative and give a “new” and “unknown” perspective. These people don’t even believe the Bible. Why take their word on? They’re just trying to add these imaginative theories and ideas about what the text “really means. The text speaks for itself. There’s no hidden agenda. No one colluded to add details later to shape any narrative. If they did, they would change the entire Bible. The story of David is a great example of this. If any of these “experts” could be trusted, why wouldn’t the Israelites simply remove all the negative things about David’s life, so he’s a perfectly righteous king? What about the prophets or judges? Why leave in all the gritty, ugly details? Because the authors were writing the truth. And the main character isn’t a hero or a king or a nation of a chosen people. The Bible is about God Himself.

    6:07 Also, the Antediluvian Dynasty of Eridu does not appear in the earliest copy of the _SKL_ dating to King Shulgi of Ur Dynasty III. In that version, Kish dominated the Early Dynastic Period of Sumer as one long dynasty followed by three smaller ones. Eridu appears and Kish is split into four dynasties among several others in the more familiar edition produced during the succeeding Amorite Dynasty of Isin owing to the "cyclical" conception of kingship which replaced the dominant "linear" ideology after the fall of Ur III. It also erased a Dynasty of Adab with had four kings after the Gutian rule and reclassified its last king, Tirigan, as belonging to the latter. Piotr Steinkeller described the Ur III manuscript in a 2003 article, really fascinating stuff.

    The earth was destroyed by a flood. The Garden of Eden was destroyed as well. The flood altered the landscapes of the whole world, finding Eden would be impossible. Also God said we are no longer allowed there, so because of that we also won’t find it.

    • @InquisitiveBible
      @InquisitiveBible 7 дней назад

      The problem with this view (aside from the elephant in the room: the non-historicity of the flood) is that Genesis 2 uses the Akkadian names for the rivers and relates them to real places like Assur and Nubia. If you propose the text is talking about different rivers that had different names and flowed through territory that no longer exists, then the geographical description is reduced to nonsense. The rivers were not called the Perat and Hiddeqel (how could they be?), and the Hiddeqel did not flow on the eastern side of Assur.

    • @Dave-le7ek
      @Dave-le7ek 7 дней назад

      @ when Noah and his sons left the ark they were the only people. Their descendants would have renamed everything that had a name before the flood. The flood definitely happened. All land masses around the world are covered in sedimentary rock. Which I’m sure you know is deposited by water. Every mountain has ocean fossils. Fossils need to be buried quickly to form. The eruption of mount st Helen’s proved that rock layers and coal can be formed in under 20 years. The earth is young. I’ve studied more than just the bible.

    • @InquisitiveBible
      @InquisitiveBible 7 дней назад

      > Their descendants would have renamed everything that had a name before the flood. That’s my point though. They would not have given those rivers Akkadian names, since the Akkadian language wouldn’t have existed until after Babel if you take the primeval history literally. Much later than that, actually, because you need time for the Akkadian language to evolve out of the Afroasiatic language family (it shares an ancient common origin with languages as diverse as Egyptian and Berber). So they’re not the same rivers, and they couldn't have had same names. A hyper-literal interpretation makes nonsense of Genesis 2. > All land masses around the world are covered in sedimentary rock. I’m not a geologist, but the geological column is much more complicated than that. There are chalk layers hundreds of feet deep created through slow deposition of coccolith skeletons at a rate of a half-millimeter per year. There are layers of sedimentary rock created through wind deposition, an incredibly slow process that takes thousands of years. There are layers where dried, cracked mud slowly turned to hard rock in the sun over hundreds of years. There are places where multiple forests have grown and been buried with new forests grown and buried above them, like the Joggins Fossil Cliffs in Nova Scotia. In one location, I believe there are twenty-six fossilized forests stacked on each other this way, each of which took thousands of years to grow. We have lake varves where we can count thousands of individual sediment layers, each representing a single year of sediment and requiring extremely calm water all year round. Placid Lake Suigetsu in Japan has varves with 70,000 layers piled 45 meters high. None of this is compatible with deposition by a violent flood. And that’s before we get into the matter of the clear transition from older species to newer ones as we move up the column. “Dinosaurs running for high ground” doesn’t cut it, since we find coprolites and dinosaur nests in the same layers as their respective dinosaur species, and not at the bottom of the column. The whole flood geology idea was invented by a non-geologist who was motivated by the doctrine of the Seventh-Day Adventist church, and it shows. Fossils are created through slow processes that usually require unique environmental circumstances. (Low-oxygen bogs, tar pits, dry deserts, mud with high lime concentration, etc.) They don’t typically form under cataclysmic events like flood runoff. I encourage you to check out the channel of @DrJoelDuff, a Christian geologist, who explores these problems in detail. www.youtube.com/@DrJoelDuff

      "And Balak (destroyer = winter), the son of Zippor (singer = summer), saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites " (from amar, to speak = the intercalary days = the dwellers in Midian, the land of strife- the time occupying the last days of winter and the first of spring). And Balak (destroyer), who was king of the Moabites (winter days), sent messengers (astrologers) unto Balaam (a foreigner = leap-year day), the son of Beor (Moon, the day left, after 13 lunations of 28 days each), to Pethor (table = plane of the equator), to inform him of a people just arrived from Egypt (winter), which cover the earth, requesting him (Balaam) to come and " curse me this people” (winter curses the people). Balaam detained the messengers overnight (Num. 22.8) that he might learn the Lord's will in the matter. God told Balaam he could not go with Balak, and that he should not curse the Israelites, for they are blessed, being summer and not winter months. Thus, the messengers (astrologers) having consulted the stars during that night, could not say whether the bissextile day ought to be added to that year or not. Balak, determined to carry his point, next sent princes "more and more honorable than they," i.e., better skilled in their profession. These Balaam also kept overnight, that he "might know what the Lord will say unto me more" (Num. 22.19). God (Aries) now told Balaam to go with them, i.e., the astrologers found the day (Balaam) should be added to that year, and added it accordingly. So, Balaam (the bissextile day) rose up in the morning and mounted his ass (the Sun is here mythologically styled an ass) and went with the princes of Moab (the winter months), i.e., the bissextile day was added to the winter side of the year, as it is still done. We may here take note that the word athor, here translated ass, comes from a root which means to move by short steps, as the sun apparently does. Time, a part of which is Balaam, is the Sun's burden. But God's anger was kindled (literally the Ram's nose became red. for it was rising just then), because Balaam went. However, his ass faltered three times (the three watches of the night). The third time Balaam's anger was kindled, i.e., his nose became red (it was not only the dawn of the day, but the dawn of spring also), and he smote the ass with a staff = makkel= germination, from makel, to germinate. The third time, the ass spoke (vegetation began to appear), and the Lord opened Balaam's eyes (the sun rose just then), and he fell flat upon his face (num. 22.31), and the farce was near its end. (We remember that Peter denied his Lord three times, when his eyes were opened at cock-crowing, i.e., when the Sun rose). Balaam's two servants were the Fishes of February, and the wall he rode against was the spring equinox. He couldn't curse the children of Israel, the enemies of Balak, because they were blessed; the word that God (Aries) put in his mouth that only he could speak.

    You like most Bible scholars are lost. Eden is located in the human brain, and the 4 rivers are actually arteries that carry blood to the new brain. The gold, bdellium, and the onyx stone refer to the third eye.

      Thanks for the comment. Can I ask how you arrive at that interpretation?

    "The ancients knew nothing of space" Proceeds to make structures more accurate to astronomy than any modern day equivilent 😂

      Which structures are you thinking of? The ancients could certainly do astronomy (well, some of them), but they didn't know that *space*, the empty vacuum that comprises the vast voids between planets and stars, existed.

    Goliath wasn't even a giant according to the Septuagint, Josephus, and the Dead Sea Scrolls. Goliath's miraculous height was a change made by the Masoretes during the medieval era. The battle between David and Goliath is also one of the most altered episodes in the Book of Samuel and in practice, the younger the manuscript, the more the scribes have altered and added to the text. Today, scholars have also concluded that in the original account, Goliath was slain by Elhanan, not David, and that someone made this change to the text even before Chronicles was written.
