Fun fact: This did happen, but it didn't happen to Ray Kroc, it happened to the franchises that existed PRIOR to Kroc and the McDonald brothers working together. For what it's worth, unlike what the movie suggests, Mac and Dick McDonald didn't care about what other restaurants did, they only cared about their restaurant. As long as they got their franchising fee, that's all that mattered. Kroc on the other hand saw the issues and immediately made sure that every restaurant he opened had the same menu items, same prices and bought from the same vendor, which wa McDonald's itself. This helped make sure that there was consistency, the number one thing that most people look to when visiting a fast food place nowadays. That was the success. Mac and Dick McDonald could run a restaurant, but absolutely knew nothing about running a company.
to be fair at the time, all the franchise deal was for a one-time fee of $1,000 which included the store plans and a description of their system. No further assistance or support was given. ray came along later and it was $950.00 and 1.9% gross sales with 0.50% going to the brothers.
The problem is despite being a horrible man in many ways he was right at the time and for many years afterwards. Walt was the same. Ultimately, he knew if they carried on like that the business would die.
The only reason why you know that story is because Ray himself brings it up in his book Grinding It Out, where he says it was a bad idea in hindsight. He gives credit to every person who had a great idea for McDonald's, which is also why we know about Lou Groen and the Fillet O Fish.
You know…Ray Kroc may have been an ass…but if it wasn’t for his absolute persistence in consistency…we wouldn’t have the same tasting burger from Washington State to New York to Europe to Australia. The man made it happen.
Only thing good about Ray in this movie is - even he stole the brand from the brothers, he still try to keep the same menu and dignity to the brand without adding any nonsense on the menu
Ray Kroc wasn’t nearly the pirate they made him out to be. He made the McDonald brothers millionaires all the while they were kicking and screaming. Years later it was even revealed, I forget which brother, was completely satisfied with their deal. If they came along with him for the ride like he wanted they would have been just as rich and McDonalds would have grew bigger faster.
Ray didn't steal the brand, he bought it for more than it was worth. Mac and Dick McDonald made more money with Ray Kroc than they ever would have without him.

@@ogfail1867 Mac and Dick McDonald didn't lift a finger to build their company. They were content running their San Bernardino restaurant. They made way more money with Kroc than they ever would have without him. Kroc bought their company for more than it was worth, and it took a decade to pay that loan off. Kroc on the other hand would spend the next 2 decades expanding before he got rich, so it's not like this movie is accurate whatsoever.
