Sunny Day Real Estate are arguably the first full-fledged midwest emo band, with their 1994 album Diary serving as a landmark for the development and history of the genre, marked by aggressive yet introspective lyricism and performances. The band would release one more album, referred to by fans as LP2 or The Pink Album, in 1995 and break up the same year. In 1997, guitarists/vocalists/lyricists Jeremy Enigk and Dan Hoerner were approached by Sub Pop, the band's old label, to release a collection of rarities.
