  • (This video covers both the original 1987 cassette version and the 2009 expanded reissue version of Hole in the Heart.)
Ramleh was born out of the early "power electronics" scene that began in England in the early 1980s, a genre intended to increase the abrasiveness and experimentation of industrial music. Their earliest releases, alongside those from many of their contemporaries, drew controversy for alleged glorification of taboo subjects and imagery, which partially motivated Ramleh bandleader Gary Mundy to hang up the project in 1984. Mundy revived Ramleh as a solo project in 1986, devoid of shocking imagery, and began recording his most unique and emotive album. Sometime in 1987, Mundy released Hole in the Heart through his own Broken Flag label on cassette, thus bringing Ramleh back to life and cementing the act as one of the most evocative and unique groups of power electronics' wide-reaching umbrella of sound, while also marking the end of the original "power electronics" era of Ramleh, before a shift towards noise rock and psych rock. Today, we're going to take a look at it.

One of my absolute favourites. I used to play the CD in my car on long drives. For some reason, none of my friends wanted to do be in my car.

Hole in the Heart is one of the best noise albums ever, and easily my all-time favorite.

Thank you ever so much for this video.
    Very well done and appreciated.
I love the original as well but can jam the expanded from time to time.

At the end of 2017 I had a really intense depressive period and this album was really helpful in navigating that experience.

I totally understand. This album has been there for me in some pretty low spots as well. Completely cathartic.

Great video. I feel like a lot of albums like these should receive a similar treatment, your format is great. Would love to see what you have to say about some of the records you listed during the review (especially Ape of Naples and I Could Live in Hope)
As for the album itself. Man, I just feel the exact same way if not even more so than you, currently sitting on my top 10 favorites of all time. I have yet to find something that manages to depict so many glimmering and transcendental emotions with so much precision by using so many jarring, abrasive and uninviting resources such as noise palettes. Truly an album that always spoke to me as a lesson of how one can find true genuine beauty even in the bitterest and most dreadful of scenarios. Incredible release all around

Hey, thanks for watching and I appreciate the compliments! I've been drafting a video for The Ape of Naples for the past few months since it was in constant rotation for me a little while ago. "finding beauty in dread" is a perfect way to describe this album. It's unbelievable.

Great review, how would you rank all the songs on the 2009 edition from worst to best?

My favorite album of all time. I cry every time, and I still can’t explain why.

Great review, absolutely great album. I'd also recommend checking out Navicon Torture Technology, some of his releases are quite similar, even though a bit harsher and more synth-driven. Ramleh, Navicon Torture Technologies and more recent Sutcliffe Jügend are my personal pinnacle of "emotional/melodic" noise music.

I discovered this album a few months ago, and listened to it while doing biology homework. Never before have I regretted something so much

Some of my music is inspired by this very album. Gary Mundy (the front man of ramleh) also started following me, so shits good man!

might be abit late for this but if you really want to find another desolated and terrifyingly depressive album that sounds somewhat the same as Hole in The Heart, i reccomend The Gerogerigege's 2016 album Moenai Hai, the 2nd track alone makes it one of my favorite albums of alltime

I think my all time favorite, in terms of sound alone, is Maurizio Bianchi. Works like Neuro Habitat / Mörder Unter Uns + IBM + Industrial Tape + Regel… like holy shit
These artists Are the reason I’m proud to affiliate with the death industrial label. I’d rather be death industrial than “noise” or “power electronics”

The only PE artist from around that time that hits a similar spot to me is Maurizio Bianchi, lots of distorted melodies etc

Sorry for the very late reply: I've ended up clearing my entire review backlog over the last year or so and unfortunately I don't know when I will end up making a review for FSA. I still have a lot of love for the band and their earliest works so it's not impossible for the future but I can't say with certainty when it'll be written and ready to go.
